El Centenario — Restaurant in Topeka

I feel like the star rating for this place may have been bought or provided by friends/family, possibly from people who have zero taste buds and extremely low standards for any type of restaurant.

This place is the prime example of why I'm terrified to try any "authentic" Mexican restaurants in the area. I've been trying to find somewhere with genuinely good Mexican food, and unfortunately, this is not that place.

I had a lunch date here yesterday and though the service was wonderful, the atmosphere was dark and dingey, and the food was absolutely atrocious.

I ordered 2 enchiladas and he ordered the 2 beef tacos combo (#10 combo). The food was delivered within about 5 minutes of ordering. Already very suspicious to me. Even fast food restaurants take longer that to get served.

Once I started eating, you could tell right away they must make their food days prior and just refrigerate it and serve it until it goes bad. The meat had zero seasoning, zero onions, peppers, etc, and felt like mush in my mouth. The tortillas were soggy and completely lacked any flavor, despite being topped with their mystery enchilada sauce (which also had zero seasoning/flavor) and the smallest pinch of cheese I've ever seen. Cheese that was barely even hot enough to actually melt.

My dates tacos were made with pre-made, taco bell tortillas and the meat was the same as mine. There was an overabundance of toppings and very little meat in the taco, making it borderline vegetarian.

The food was absolutely disgusting and I'm honestly surprised we didn't end up with food poisoning.

Once we were finished eating, we were sitting and chatting when a COCKROACH decided it wanted to invite itself into our conversation. It came onto the table and crawled around without a care in the world. Obviously this guy must enjoy good company, because it was not skittish at all.

I get it. Many restaurants have bugs. With all of the food it's difficult to keep them out. But the last thing I want to see chilling on my table is a damned cockroach.

As soon as we left, I felt the need to check my purse and my clothes to make sure I didn't bring any new pets home with me, because as much as I love critters, those are NOT the critters I want in my house.

Unbelievable experience!!!! This has to be the worst and most embarrassing experience that we have encountered at any eating establishment we have been too. We ordered our food and ate, the waiter brought our tickets and we paid. The waiter returned to our table and told us to have a nice evening. As we walked out - the owner came running out of the establishment at yelled at us, 'You are not leaving without paying your bill.' 'Get back here and pay your bill you are going to eat and leave without paying.' We walked back in and explained that we did pay our bill - we called the waiter over to the table were we were sitting (while everyone in the restaurant stared) and the waiter explained they did pay - the gentleman gave me a $100 bill for his ticket but I forgot to put the ticket in the drawer. The owner then demand that we leave - no apology - no I am sorry for the mistake - nothing? We would eat there on a regular basis (every Friday evening) and have never been treated like this before at this place or in any eating establishment. At the least - you could have apologize for causing embarrassment to me and my friends in front of all the patrons that were in the restaurant. We never will eat in your establishment ever again and we will let everyone that we know how you treat...

Food was a 4 out of 5, but the restaurant, service, bathrooms and atmosphere were a 2 at most. We waited and waited for our order to be taken and then continued to wait a very long time for the food to come out. The tables were tiny and our party of 4 were squished into a booth made for 2. There wasn't enough room for our plates of food. Unfortunately, I had to go to the restroom while visiting this place and it was horrible (like scary dirty), let's just say amongst so many things in that bathroom there was a white foam substance on the wall of the tiny toilet stall then when you wash your hands to get the filth feeling off you find the paper towel dispenser is broken and you have to stick your once clean fingers into the paper towel tube sitting on the counter that is swollen from the water from other people hands. If that's their bathroom idk what the kitchen must hold. Too bad I didn't see that BEFORE eating my food. This is not a family friendly restaurant/atmosphere. I...
