A bit of a hot mess, both literally and figuratively. Although it was about 50 degrees outside, a large fireplace was lit in a full, compact dining room! It must have been 75-80 inside! Yikes! It was eventually turned off, as someone noticed some sweltering diners. I was dining with one companion, my mother. We arrived 5 minutes prior to our reservation time @ 1p today (Friday 3/25/22). A group of 4 arrived soon after. The hostess, who was very pleasant, said she was not ready for us, although I made my reservation through Open Table, which she did have a record of. We were seated after 10 minutes. We waited about another 10 minutes for someone to take our drink order. This is when my mother and I saw that the party seated after us already had their drinks. We quickly found out that there were 2 servers: a very pleasant young lady and our server. I believe that a previous poster on Google had the misfortune to have our server. The OP mentioned that their server kept referring to their party as "kids," and was "not up to the usual standards of Rick's." That assessment is absolutely correct! My very sweet mother hails from NYC, although she has lived in WNY since the early 90s. When the server asked for our drink orders, my mother asked for coffee. Since my mom is not from this area, she pronounces coffee differently. The server actually imitated my mom's accent, and said, "You are clearly not from here." At that point, I asked my mom if she would like to leave, but my mom wanted to treat me to a nice lunch, and said that Rick's has great food. She was right. Our usual East Aurora lunch spot, The Roycroft Inn, has not been serving lunch since COVID. I had the Chicken Wing soup, Crab Cakes, and Brookie. My mom had the Turkey Sandwich, Sweet Potato Fries, and Creme Brulee. She said her lunch was excellent, and so was mine. I think if we had the other server, our experience would have been considerably different. I did find the portions to be a bit small, however, I am really not a part of the target demographic, based on the lunch time diners. Many were 65+ and of the WASP variety. My mother, who is a very gracious and elegant lady, did not deserve to be made fun of. I think of East Aurora as being a more genteel and kind place, and the server was not like any server I have encountered before in EA. She also brought me the wrong beverage, and was never refilling the water glasses, or asking us if we needed more beverages. I also thought it was odd given the table linen service, wait time, and price point, that a basket of bread was not offered. This employee may be related to the owner(s), which is why she is employed at this establishment. Owner(s): It may behoove you to know that a refined and educated lady from NYC should be treated with as much respect as a local. My mother and I have been frequent guests at The Roycroft Inn over the decades, and once they resume lunch service, we will be headed there as they have always treated us with kindness! The 2 stars are awarded for your excellent chef and the pleasant hostess, who refilled our...
Read moreMy husband and I held our wedding reception for 70 adults in the upstairs dining and banquet area. The format was Friday evening cocktails, passed appetizers, appetizer stations and a chafing station. Set up included cocktail tables, round and square dining tables, dance area and bar.
Parking - Located on Main Street in the village of East Aurora, parking is usually at a premium. Arrangements for parking were made in advance for an adjacent lot.
Decor - Simple and elegant. Tasteful Christmas decor and existing architectural improvements from recent renovations give the place a cozy and inviting feel. Most attendees were local and familiar with the establishment, but those from out of town commented on the inviting atmosphere. Technology available for music and spontaneous karaoke. Note: The building is not handicap accessible to the upstairs, but the restrooms are.
Food quality - I will run out of room before I can express how delicious, abundant and varied the options were. Guests could remain seated the entire evening or graze. Presentation was elegant with choices that ranged from simple (fresh veggies) to more complex flavors for the more discriminating palette. Comments made to myself and my groom were nothing less than glowing with many commenting that they will be heading back for dinner.
Drinks - Full bar service as well as waiter service available. Upscale cocktails were served with noticeable expertise.
Service - Exemplary! This is where we separate the men from the boys. It goes without saying that the wait/bar staff was competent and courteous. That is what you should expect in a fine dining establishment. These individuals went above and beyond. They were efficient and accommodating. Tables were serviced and cleared quickly. Special care and attention was given to the elder and more drunk members of the party. Were it not for the uniforms, one might have thought that you were being taken care of by a family member. As a bride, who was looking forward to enjoying an evening with family and close friends, it was a great comfort to not be bothered, pestered, questioned or henpecked. Menu and set up arrangements were made directly with the owner.
Cost - I read reviews and I find this a difficult area to address. What one deems expensive another may consider average. We feel that we were treated fairly and the total cost came in just slightly over estimated quote.
Overall our experience not only met. but exceeded our expectations. Marrying the man of my dreams was definitely the highlight of the evening, but the owners and staff of Rick's On Main provided us with the most amazing wedding celebration.
Since the nuptials, we have been in for dinner and drinks at the bar, and find it our new favorite place to drink and dine. There is a good chance we will become regulars. Stop in and look for the happiest couple...
Read moreI’m so sad that I’m writing this review and giving this rating. For years Rick’s on Main has been one of my favorite restaurants and a favorite for girls night. I have been raving about Rick’s to my boyfriend for a year so he made surprise reservations for our anniversary. Well, to say the least he was disappointed and it did not exceed our expectations. It took 45 mins to get the hot pepper dip!!! There was no acknowledgment or apology from the waitress. After the dip, our next dish , the Caprese salad took another 30 mins. Why did either of this dishes take so long? There is nothing to be cooked! We waited so long and our frustrated grew so much that we canceled our last dish. While we waited, we observed all of the other tables getting their food. And get this, our server acted like she was doing us a favor by “taking it off of our bill” (the dish we didn’t get). When she came back to deliver our check , she was very apologetic but did nothing to help our experience. I took this opportunity to express to her our disappointment because by now I felt that we created a friendly repor and then, she started making excuses about how slow our service was by saying she was trying to give us more time. Whatever that means. But wait, it get better…. She asked me if I want to talk to a manager. The manager comes over on her high horse and proceeds to talk to us like we are stupid people and telling us we should have ordered differently! What??!!! At this point, we had heard enough and my boyfriend thanked her for stopping by. Then she asked how can she make this right? End result, they comped the hot pepper dip. That’s it. After we bought a bottle of wine, an additional glass of wine and never got our final dish. Mind you, we finally cashed out at 9:45 and our reservations were at 7:30. I’m not sure I’ll go back, definitely my boyfriend will not. I don’t know what happened to Rick’s on Main but I’m hopeful it will get better. Also, one of my suggestions is that they hire better managers. Someone who knows how to solve problems w/o disrespecting their guests. We sat outside and they have a very pretty and...
