Im a few burgers behind
This is from 7/16
We were done with my Father's doctor appointment, in E. Setauket, a bit before 11.15am...
Nothing is open for Lunch until noon, for the most part.
Maggie's Eatery, in Miller Place was supposed to open at 11.30, but we checked there, and I guess they were late to get there, because we stopped by, and no lights on.
Uggg I could just taste their Hamburger!!.. It is one of the best around in my book!!!
So.. where to now, at this time of day??
I'm really hungry.
My father, whose dementia is such that his understanding of a restaurant not being open, isnt the best, and he's really hungry, as well
I thought we'd hit the Zona dinner, in Rocky Point, and check that out to eat
As we headed East on 25A, passing Spiros, I caught JnR Steakhouse on the horizon, up to the left..
Bingo!! No cars in the parking, and I recalled they open early.
Plus, it's Tuesday, and they have a Veterans Special.
He was WWII, I was Vietnam Era, so we took advantage of it.
We both ordered burgers.
Ive had the burger here before, and it was just average. Not bad at all, but just average..
I noticed they had a Marinated Burger on the menu, so i went with it this time.
Because we were so hungry we ordered a pretzel to munch on until the burgers were ready.
The pretzel was good , came with 2 sauces, and cheese..Nice and crisp on the outside, soft a hot on the inside.
I didn't realize they give the table a decent sized bowl of macaroni salad, so we had that to munch on, as well
It was good..A bit of tang to it, not a lot, but enough
I am so glad I ordered the marinated burger
Wow, the taste was surprising good..It was earthy, a bit of a salt taste it, and a bit of unctuousness.
I was completely blown away on how good it was.
I really understimated that burger.
It was also as juicy as it could possibly be, usually a sign of being hand formed.
It immediately moved into my "Top 10"
Its not in my rarified Top Teir, but a burger that I would highly recommend to anyone.
The bun to meat ratio was very good
The temp I asked for was near perfect, medium rare
The French Fries were good, as well ..They looked, and tasted like they were hand cut... Skin on, which I appeciate
The plate also came with Fried Onions, which is a nice bonus.
Our Server, Alexia was great..Very nice to my Father, all while being quick, polite, and professional..
It was a hot day, and they the AC on COLD, so it was a welcome relief.
There was plenty of parking, but we got there at 11.30ish, so there was no problem. There's a sizable parking lot there
More than a few good burgers on that 25A corridor
Glad we stopped in

Read moreNormally I go to the Medford location, but since a friend moved to Mt. Sinai, we decided to try this location and I think we will take the extra time to drive to Medford going forward. We waited at least ten minutes to be acknowledged, and when who I assume was the manager seated us he seemed to complain that it was busy since it was a nice day out and everyone was out and about, followed up by a complaint that tomorrow would be slow. Which would please you, sir? Negativity is hardly a nice way to start an evening. It took a long time for our drink order to be taken, and then a second server asked for our drink order, leaving us confused as to who would be our server. We only ordered sodas and it took 15 minutes, no water in the meantime. Either the chef is a fan of vinegar or the restaurant has a surplus, because the macaroni bean salad, Caesar salads, my coleslaw, and I suspect my friend's garlic mashed potatoes had far too much vinegar, we couldn't eat much of either item. As for the potatoes, it's possible I was tasting sour cream, or Greek yogurt, or rancid milk. Hard to tell. I ordered the coconut shrimp, and while they were nice and crispy, there are 8 or 9 given on the platter and you are served about a tablespoon of the pina colada sauce, and said "sauce" seems to be only coconut milk. At the Medford location it's much more flavorful and has small chunks of pineapple and coconut in it. I felt sorry for the servers, as there seemed to be only two taking care of a rather large room, but they seem to be poorly trained. We caught the attention of one, but just barely, as he saw us, made eye contact, and promptly went to walk away before we called after him. We would have perfectly understood if he said "Give me a moment, let me find your server," but please don't ignore a customer. Would have been good with a "one moment please" gesture, you know? Again, we suspect poor training. It's possible we caught this location on a bad night, but if nothing else I really feel they need to revisit the amount of vinegar that goes in their recipes, and their manager needs to learn how to put on a "customer...
Read more“Go to J&R in Calverton”. This is what we were told after being served undercooked buffalo wings with red blood inside and a medium rare prime rib that was blood red almost raw. When we sent the prime rib back it came back grilled on top not the way prime rib should be served and it was inedible. To their credit this meal was taken off our bill but our server told us more than once that maybe we should just go to the Calverton J and R which isn’t part of the Rocky point ownership .it is a different franchise. We have been patronizing the Rocky point J&R over the past seven years many times over the years. That was my friends meal . My meal also was sub par but I did not complain about it the salad was wilted as if it was in the refrigerator for two days and my New York strip steak was so full of gristle that it was basically also inedible. I was hesitant to make this review because after the Covid lockdown I don’t want to give any local business any bad publicity. I was taken aback by this person telling us to go to another restaurant without actually apologizing for bad food. It looks like J and R recently revamped their menu, raising prices somewhat which is understandable after the lockdown and extra expenses that restaurants incur. I was hesitant to write this. If the server had actually apologized I would look at this experience as a one-off bad night. I can’t get over the attitude. We eat out very often and have given other places second and third chances when something isn’t right. It’s incredible that at a time when businesses are fighting for your hard earned money that you are told to eat somewhere else when your $60 meal for two people is mostly poor quality. The only item that was very good on my plate was the baked potato. So if you want better food and a better dining experience I can also say “Go to the J & R...
