This was my first visit to Modu Sushi. Since it was cold out, I started with the shrimp shumai appetizer which was nice and hot and fresh tasting. I liked the nice presence of spring onion in shumai, and the sauce was a good accompaniment. The 2 rolls I ordered were stuffed well, and rolled nice and tightly. Since their kimchi was sold out, I asked for some gochujiang as a change of pace alongside the wasabi & ginger. What an eye-opener! It had everything. Salt, heat, a fair bit of acid which made the sushi really pop and made my cheeks rosy. Well, since my cheeks were rosy anyway, I ordered some cold sake, just so I didn't get cold on the way to the car. Yea, that's it... I finished, as I usually do, with a single piece of Toro as dessert. It was cut well which made it very tender, and as Toro does, just melted in your mouth. Since it was a generous piece, I had some with the gochujiang which made it even better. That is a dangerous sauce! I definitely want to visit again to try their bulgogi, or bibimbap... or both. As Arnold said, "I'll be back". 😀

We came in for lunch before dropping off my husband for a flight out. We started with a white miso with soft tofu and seaweed before having beef tataki, which was tender and perfectly flavored with scallions and their house sauce. Japanese couple running the front of house, kitchen and sushi bar. The wait for the sushi, which we chose a la carte, was worth every bite. The rice was perfectly cooked and seasoned and the fish was fresh. We had the eel and avocado, yellowtail, tuna and salmon rolls. Our favorite was the yellowtail as it was so flavorful and fresh tasting by comparison to other times we have eaten it at other restaurants. The service was attentive and timely. Happy to return here the next time we pass through Albany.

The quality of the fish is outstanding, it is easily the best in the Albany area. I visit here frequently to see family and I have tried all the well reviewed sushi places. Somehow I missed Modu, but you might say I saved the best for last. This is not a Japanese fusion place, which are very common in the area and usually focus on a trendy atmosphere. Modu is more traditional and you are going to get very high quality fish which is absolutely delicious. Between the tasty food and good service our whole group of six agreed that it is obvious why it is so highly rated and we were all wondering how we missed it. We’re definitely coming back.

If you don’t want to read this whole paragraph, the main idea is that the atmosphere was great, although the service could have been better, but the food was truly sublime. I’d recommend coming ready to wait a while for your food, but loving everything you eat. I arrived with my family, and frankly, we weren’t impressed at first. The atmosphere was very nice, but service left much to be desired. From what we could tell, there were a total of two employees working, one of which a chef, the other a waitress. We were seated in about 2 minutes, but it took 20 minutes for our order to be taken. It wasn’t incredibly busy in the restaurant at the time, and we received water and miso soup after about 40 minutes of waiting. However, the food served was spectacular. Our first appetizer was the crispy noodle shrimp tempura, and it was one of my favorite parts of the meal. We couldn’t tell what the fried “noodles” around the shrimp were composed of, but they were indeed crispy, and we enjoyed them very much. Son after we finished, we were served our next appetizers, a seaweed salad and a kani salad. The salads were, in my personal opinion, about average. They weren’t exquisite, but they definitely weren’t bad either. The kani salad was surprisingly spicy, and I didn’t have much of it. Afterwards, we were finally served our sushi. We ordered spicy tuna rolls, California rolls, spicy crab rolls, and sashimi combo 1, which came with California rolls and various nagiri. The fish was clearly high quality, it was incredibly tender, and the sushi rice was also tasty. Ultimately, I was quite satisfied with my meal, and I think my family was as well. Some other notes about the restaurant- the interior was very welcoming, there was a subtle perfume I kept picking up that a really liked. The seating was simple but pleasing to the eye, and the lighting matched it to enhance the mood. Finally, they had piano recordings of studio ghibli soundtracks playing the entire time, which I personally adored. Overall, I had a wonderful time, and I absolutely will...

I hate to write a negative review but I feel compelled to share my experience with poor customer service at this restaurant, in the hopes that they read this and give it some thought. I went with my parents, ordering 2 kitchen appetizers, 2 kitchen entrees for them and a sushi & sashimi platter for myself. Two women were serving the entire dining room, and one sushi chef was making the sushi. Food came out slowly, but eventually entrees arrived. The 2 kitchen entrees were put in front of my parents, with no word about my sushi entree. I assumed it would be coming shortly so didn’t inquire. I waited 15 mins, and one of the women came over to apologize about the slowness. Then 30 mins elapsed, then 45. At this point, my parents had been done eating for awhile, and so I finally went up to the register to inquire. They were confused about my order and didn’t seem to be able to locate our table’s ticket, then when I told them what I ordered, they offered to cancel it. No apology - just handed me the bill even though I hadn’t eaten. I was appalled. I decided to finish the little bit of food my mom had on her plate as my dinner and asked if I could have some rice to eat with it. They brought the rice out promptly, but then handed us an updated bill w/ the rice. I am always willing to pay for what I order, but I never got my meal and they wanted to charge me $2.50 for the rice? I was stunned. In any case, the food I did have was tasty but I would be very hesitant to return considering this very strange and frankly,...

As someone who’s traveled extensively along the East Coast for business and pleasure, I’ve dined at countless restaurants and often found Asian cuisine outside of Boston or New York City to be average at best. Modu Sushi completely shatters that expectation. This gem delivers an exceptional dining experience that rivals big-city standards.

The chef and kitchen staff at Modu Sushi are truly outstanding, crafting fresh, beautifully presented, and delicious sushi and sashimi. Their menu offers something for everyone, from the simple yet perfectly executed California roll to the indulgent and flavorful Lobster Delight roll. Every bite is a testament to their skill and attention to quality.

Beyond sushi, the kitchen shines with dishes like the Modu Bibim Bap, bursting with fresh, assorted vegetables, as well as savory classics like Bulgogi (marinated beef), Duruchigi (marinated pork), and Tempura Udon, a comforting blend of Japanese noodles, shrimp, and vegetables. Each dish is consistently well-prepared and satisfying.

Whether I dine in or opt for takeout, the experience is always top-notch. The staff is warm, welcoming, and attentive, creating a friendly atmosphere. The restaurant itself is impeccably clean and fresh, adding to the overall comfort and enjoyment.

Modu Sushi has become my go-to spot for Asian cuisine, and I can’t recommend it highly enough. If you’re craving sushi or Korean dishes done right, this is the...
