DO NOT EAT HERE IF YOU HAVE ALLERGIES. Otherwise the place is nice and I’d recommend it.
So I got an add for this place on my car a few month back, I work across the street and I like the boba place next door. I have severe allergies to sesame (and nuts but not relevant) so I have to be careful with most Asian restaurants, as cooking with sesame is very common. When I went to pick up a group boba order next door, I stopped into the dumpling shop to ask about allergies..
On 8/12 around 12:15 pm I talked to the cashier. The place looks really clean and the cashier seemed really nice. I told the cashier I had allergies and was wondering if the store cooks in peanut or sesame oil. I watched him walk across the kitchen talking to his coworker. He came back and told me they used either vegetable or soybean oil (I can’t remember which but it was one I’m not allergic to). I decided to try something, so I asked to order one of the dumplings. I then saw they had habachi noodles but that it said topped with sesame. I asked the cashier if it was something that’s possible to make without sesame or if it was a premade batch. He told me the sesame is put on top at the end so they could just not put it on. So I ordered it. When I opened the food at work I immediately noticed sesame on top. I gave it to my coworker.
I debated whether I should go back to tell the store about it, as no one was hurt but thinking it over, I decided it was better to say something. I was not the only customer in the store and figured maybe he told the guy about the allergy for the first item then forgot to tell him about the second item being for the same person.
So on 8/19 around maybe 1:15 pm I decided to tell the store when I was shopping at the boba place next door. The worker seemed to take my issue very seriously, he asked me what the worker looked like and offered to make the same dish without my allergy. The staff were really nice. I offered to pay several times but he refused to accept. I went back to work and when I opened the food I didn’t see sesame on top like it was last time. I took a couple of bites then immediately started having symptoms of an allergy. I looked more closely at the food and saw there were sesame seeds cooked into the food.
I didn’t eat a lot of it before I had a reaction and took Benadryl immediately while symptoms were mild, so I was able to drive to the ER without having to use my EpiPen, but I still ended up in the ER from around 2pm to 8 pm for observation. I was given an IV for meds and for the next 5 days I have to take a corticosteroid. I know people with a lot more severe allergies than me, so I hope putting this out here means that this issue doesn’t happen for anyone else.
The staff is nice. The restaurant is clean. The food tastes good. The food is at a good price. There’s a reason this place has good reviews and if you don’t have allergies I do think it’s worth checking out, but if you have food allergies I strongly recommend finding a...
Read moreSolid 3. This is an automated shop. Pay via card only. Online ordering is not a thing yet for this particular location. When you 1st walk in its busy but super chaotic. The music is obnoxiously loud for a mid weekday lunch, it felt like i was in club. You're literally yelling just to hear the person next to you. So if you're looking for a relaxing lunch this is not it. Plus there's limited seating. The one worker upfront is a bit too overly pressing on showing how to pick your order that it's not an enjoyable experience. I felt rushed and didn't get a real look through of the offerings. My receipt didn't print and you need the receipt in order to retrieve your order from the automate. You will scan the receipt in order for your window to open, to retrieve your food. So i was left standing clueless as i didn't even have an order number to reference to. I told the girl and she took the blank receipt and told me she'd fix it. She didn't. Lucky after waiting and waiting i got a text and thankfully it sent me a barcode, because if i had to wait, I'd be there longer than i was already. They require tipping, even though, you make the order yourself, and retrieve it yourself, so if you're one of those people who believe tipping is reserved for actual service, it may upset you, like it did a few standing around me. You have to take into consideration the type of clients coming here from the surronding area. Alot of old school people. So i can understand the frustration. For a bowl of sweet n sour chicken and noodles combo, it cost me nearly $25 after forced tip. You're getting sit down restaurant prices for food court quality fast food. Not worth it the price. For those who are not cilantro fans, id pass on the bowls. I like cilantro but this was an over abundant use of it, that you couldn't taste anything but cilantro. And i bite into a raw piece of chicken too. This place has a large learning curve ahead. I'd wait a bit to go try it again to be fair and hopefully get a better, more organized experience with better...
Read moreI ate at this establishment twice so far so my review is based on my 2 experiences. Nice, new location. Definitely a different set-up with no paper menus. You must order thru the app or inside on a tablet. They have many choices from their reimagined dumplings to chow bowls. First and foremost , these don't compare to the Authentic fare you can get from Flushing or Chinatown. So if you are expecting Flushing or Chinatown style food, you will be sadly disappointed! On my first visit, they had just opened and were running low on a lot of their dumping offerings. The ones I was able to get tasted just ok.. I got a mix of seared and steamed and they all equally came out the same, another disappointment. I did try their chow bowls which are surprisingly very good. The choices of sauce and protein make a good selection. The portion size is also excellent. I got one bowl with rice and one with noodles. The noodles were amazing the first time. They were sauced and seasoned perfectly. Lastly, I ordered their coke slaw which is by far the star of the whole establishment. It was made fresh, with a good base and decent portion size. For my second visit, I got the coke slaw again which was still amazing, I ordered more dumplings which were again, just ok.. this time, the texture was ok but the filling inside was underwhelming and lacking in flavor. The two chow bowls I also got were not too good the 2nd time around. The noodles with my bowl were so bland and not sauces properly. There is a rotating staff which of all are nice and welcoming. To sum it up, give this place a chance but be prepared for inconsistency & disappointment. They don't accept cash & it's pricey...
