This is one of my favorite restaurants when I'm visiting the Ballston Spa/Saratoga Springs area. So it was a no-brainer when my daughter asked me where I wanted to go for this year for Mother's Day while visiting her and her family.
The food is delicious, fresh and dependable. This time I ordered the Afternoon Tea which is served on a 3-tier stand and includes your choice of a 3 different items from the menu: a sandwich, panini, quiche or salad plus a scrumptious scone or tea bread served with cream and preserves at $16. I enjoyed the curry chicken club, house salad and berry scone (see photos). My spouse ordered the eggplant panini, lobster bisque and berry scone as well. You can't go wrong with this!
As its name implies, the Whistling Kettle is also a great place for teas...and they have a huge selection in store and online. I ordered some delicious teas this winter and have enjoyed them all. Some recommendations are the Scottish Caramel Pu-erh, Maple Taffy Black Tea, Carrot Cake Rooibos and the Blend 1776.
The staff is very friendly and professional and go out of their way to please. It's also a great place for small groups. I've hosted two baby "sprinkles" here and as always the food and service was excellent. They don't require reservations but ask that you call 15 minutes before you plan to arrive for seating requests. It's a good idea that you do this as they get really busy during holidays, like Mother's Day.
Can't wait to return to the Whistling Kettle when I'm back...
Read moreI selected The Whistling Kettle for dinner on my actual birthday because I thought my sister, visiting from out of town, would get a kick out of the 3 tiered presentation of "afternoon tea". While most of our food was good, the extremely poor service was surprising. We'd been eating out all week and never encountered such a dismissive attitude towards the patrons. When the food arrived, my sister noticed that they forgot the dressing for her salad. We could not get the attention of our server so eventually she stopped the young man clearing tables and he got her some. Later in the meal, she had finished her water and mine was getting low. We had to work very hard to get the attention of our server, who was standing near the back chatting with 2 other staff. I tried waving, standing up, etc. to no avail. She then held up her glass continuously and eventually was noticed and we got the water. The limited service was at best perfunctory and we were certainly not treated as welcomed guests. Very disappointing. And while, as a senior citizen, I've had plenty of birthdays, it was interesting to me that even though my sister brought a gift and cards to give me before the meal, the waiter (Robert) didn't even bother to say a thing, like just "oh, celebrating a special event? enjoy". I don't care that he didn't say anything but I think it reflects the attitude projected. Take our order, put the food on the table, come back with a bill,...
Read moreI wrote this review a couple years ago and am now getting around to finally posting it on google. Hopefully the food has improved since then, but I have not been back to find out. I’m really sorry to have to leave a negative review, because the staff is very nice and the lemon berry mascarpone cake is wonderful. However, much of the other food is not. Each time I’ve gone I’ve hoped that the food has improved, but I am sorely disappointed every time. Maybe it’s just the vegetarian dishes. But each time I’ve eaten there the meal is soggy, flavorless, lukewarm at best, and leaves me feeling sick. The tea also hasn’t been good. Today my partner and I tried the new pumpkin spice tea, which we were told was like a chai. It tasted like warm maple water. There was no spice whatsoever, and it was incredibly weak, even after steeping for a half hour. Both my partner and I felt unwell after our meal and had to lay down. Each time I have eaten there has been disappointing and I stay away for a long time. The only thing I’ve had there that’s worth it is the cake. I’m sorry to leave this type of review. I keep wanting to like it there. I’ve been to many tea houses, and this one just doesn’t...
