Let me start by addressing the "sushi density" in just a few blocks is getting more intense than the pizza shops around here, but this 'might' be ok. (in the town of Roslyn, we now have Kotobuki, Yuzu, Matsuya, and Okaru in spitting distance of each other). But dont get confused, as each services a different niche.
I was initially thrown off guard here . How did a good sushi place from Great Neck get transplanted into a Roslyn deli? Usually if getting sushi at a deli, you are taking many risks. But not with Matsuya. Not only do they make their sushi creations as works of art, it was fresh and tasted very good as well (see photo). It was nice to be able to get a sushi roll as my son made me take him to Delicacies to get an Asahi bowl.
But the question is if people will really opt to sit in the side room of a busy delicatessen to have a sushi meal. The service is very warm and welcoming, and Matsuya makes every effort to make your table a finer dining experience, one glance to the side and you see someone eating their bacon/egg/cheese sandwich on a piece of paper. Hmmm.
And I can accept this, but at Matsuya, you are paying for a full service sushi dining experience in this setting (my one 'special' roll cost me $21 and with tip $25. Not what I really want to be doing when going for a quick lunch.
Since I wrote the above I have now ordered delivery from Matsuya and it was great. Other sushi places around here take forever to get the food to you, but not Matsuya. And the fish is just as good as noted above.
I then wanted to see what the dinner vibe was and I was very surprised how this room was transformed (see photo).
So in conclusion: (I lifted my star rating a bit from the original as I experienced more) -- Sushi creations are fresh, well presented and taste great; -- Service very warm and welcoming; -- Atmosphere in the deli questionable during day, but night time vibes look great -- Cost given the setting might need to be recalibrated if grabbing lunch….but ok for dinner. -- As far as the sushi density and competition,...
Read moreI made reservations for my birthday dinner at Matsuya Japanese Restaurant in Great Neck and the service was utterly shocking. They were extremely rude to me and my friends. My reservation was for 6:30 we where there on time, 5 minutes early even, and they told us we had to be “out in an hour” in a VERY disrespectful way. We found ourselves rushing to eat and get out of there, and the fact that they treated me this way and knew it was my birthday since I had told them when I made the reservation that it was my birthday dinner made me feel so much worse. On top of all this, they didn’t even sing me a happy birthday, I’ve been in much lower rated restaurants and even they sing to their customer and add on to the celebration, what Matsuya did to me was unforgivable and I will never step foot in their restaurant again. I will also tell this story to anyone I know who ever tries to go and eat there. I wasted my own and my friends’ money, this restaurant does not even deserve a 1 star rating and thanks to them I’ll always remember how terrible my birthday...
Read moreFinally took the plunge and went out to dinner, outdoors in GN Plaza this evening. First time we've been out to eat since March, due to COVID-19. Matsuya Japanese restaurant (in the shopping center, next to TD Bank) has set up tables outdoors, with plenty of space between them. A few floral arrangements for decor, a little music from an outdoor speaker, and the ambience was very nice. Indoor dining is also available, but I just wasn't ready to do that yet. Service was friendly and quick, and all precautions were taken. All servers wore masks, and they didn't even have menus - we had to scan a QR code or go to the website to see the menu. The food was excellent. Those who liked sushi were very happy with their food. I'm not a sushi eater, so I had a cooked dish (sesame mango chicken) and it was also delicious. Napkins and utensils were disposable, but that didn't bother me. All in all, a pleasant experience. We'll be back for sure! If you want to eat outside, I'd suggest making a reservation, as there are a limited number of outdoor...
