This place is by far my favorite place to eat with my family. This is completely bias, fair warning. I have been coming here since my parents moved to Penfield, when i was about 4 years old. We would go out to dinner every friday as a family and Charlie's was one of the places that we would frequently go!
As a kid i would either get three entrees; Chicken/ veal french, spaghetti and meat balls, or chicken parm. Most Dishes were really big then so we always had enough for saturday lunch. For us this place was very kid friendly, but that may be because we went there so frequently.
The staff is just the nicest and they are and genuine as they come. When you walk in the door you are greeted either by the owner or his wife, not a stereotypical hostess. The staff treats you as a one of a kind customer even if they are handling half of the restaurant's tables.i
The Actual building is very deceiving and small, but size has never been a factor in my books. The front room is like a green house ish room, and my favorite place to sit is in the furtherest left corner of that area because it is quiet enough and you still can see the entire restaurant from there.
We spend most big holidays here as well as graduations and birthdays because we know we will have a good time and great food.
The prices of the food is very fair the the quality you receive!
GREAT PLACE FOR A FIRST DATE, But that may just be my opinion because the general crowd is much older, therefore there is kinda a judgement free type of atmosphere. We always take my grandparents here because the courses include a salad/ soup and bread which is very important to the older generations, and they sometime do not appreciate more trendy areas, but this place is the perfect amount of modern and homeliness you can receive from a restaurant
It is always nice to support a family owned local business.
My current favorites are usually whatever is their special for the night, I usually pick one and so does my boyfriend; and we share. Usually get a bottle of wine for dinner..
If you are a Penfield native and have not tried Charlie's.... I feel bad for you!
A must For the...
Read moreThe environment here was nice. It somehow strikes a perfect balance between ritzy and relaxed. You know you're going to get a high quality meal, but you don't feel like you have to keep your shoulders back and your back straight and way with the right girl and drink with your pinky out. And the food was excellent. The bread that we got before the meal was nicely crusty and soft. Ordered arancini (one of my favorite foods) for an appetizer, and they were interestingly delicious. I've never had them with pork inside before, so they were different, but enjoyable. Outer layer was nice and crispy as it should be. My blackened salmon was cooked perfectly. It was nice and tender inside with a light crisp on the outside, and really nice flavor. Sometimes blackened things can just taste burnt and bitter and this was not that at all. Even if you don't like "blackened" things, I'd still recommend trying it. The asparagus that it came on was similar: tender, but crispy, tasted nice, seasoned well. Only thing about my meal was that the portion size was a bit on the small side. My gf got the chicken French and added artichokes, our friends also got pasta-based dishes, and their portion sizes were pretty big. The French sauce isn't my favorite I've ever had, but it was nice, though a little mild as French sauces go. Not upset about it at all, though. She didn't finish it and we enjoyed the leftovers the next day and they were still great. Lindsay, out waitress, was pleasant and prompt, and always seemed to be there when we needed her, but not excessively so it never felt like she was interrupting it anything. Serving well done, seriously. And in top of all that, the price was really not bad at all. It wasn't cheap by any means, but...
Read moreWithout a doubt the best restaurant I visited this week in Rochester. A little pricey, but in this case, you get what you pay for. That said, the early bird menu is very affordable, has a great selection, and offers generous portions. I ordered the eggplant parmesan and chose angel hair pasta and a salad for my sides. The eggplant was breaded with panko bread crumbs rather than Italian bread crumbs. The end result was a crisp rather than mushy eggplant which I enjoyed immensely. There was a small amount of fresh mozzarella in between the layers of eggplant and it was topped with just the right amount of a delicious marinara sauce. My angel hair pasta was cooked to perfection. I chose the red sauce for my pasta to try it out. I didn't think it could possibly be as good as the marinara, but it was just as delicious, and I sopped up every last bit with the wonderful Italian bread that was served with my meal. Even the salad was great. The lettuce was fresh and crisp, and although it was topped with only one cherry tomato and one slice of cucumber, in the long run that really didn't matter, because the homemade balsamic vinaigrette and fresh crumbled blue cheese the salad was topped with was so amazing it more than made up for the scant toppings. I sat at the bar and the bartender provided friendly, and excellent service. I can't stress enough how great the experience was. The food there was really in a different stratosphere than anything else I've eaten while staying here in Rochester. This is one place that I would not miss if you're...
