This restaurant needs to choose one of two options: 1) When closed-down for most of the year, after Summer, please produce a worthy menu, and definitely get a passionate, dedicated...chef. 2) Put-up the forse sale-sign, and just end customers agony of eating over-priced frozen food. The bread served beforethe entrees, was seemingly old. Just it's appearance was noticeable that it been microwaved. Not made fresh. A restaurant such as Captain John's, charging such high menu prices, needs fresh bread, daily, for it's patrons. Daily. No excuses. We did not have appetizers, which were, by appearance on other tables...frozen, cooked, and served. I had the fish fry. For a whopping $40.00, I received a fish with no herbs and spices. A tasteless batter. Three, obviously frozen shrimp. And two(Yes...two), scallops. Two tablespoons of clam strips. What-a-joke. The clam strips were tastey, although the taste reminded me of a box of frozen clam strips, I recently purchased at a local grocery store. The vegetable I chose was broccoli. I love broccoli, but this was disgusting. Tasted very old, freezer-burned taste, and was absolutely absent of herbs. Another member of my party, had a New York strip steak, ordered medium-rare. It was served medium-rare, though it appeared tough to cut. New York strip steaks, are not suppose to be tough-to-cut. A waste of $42.00. Dessert was a chocolate cake. Again...old. Tasted...old. Definitely not fresh. Perhaps over-baked, but never discarded. Yip. Never again. Myself & you, are better-off spending money at Sylvan Beach getting a slice of pizza or some ice cream. Or just tossing a line in Oneida Lake, and frying-up your own fish. The noise level, for the menu pricing, is terrible. Should be a quiet atmosphere, some Blues music playing, and not sounding like a obnoxious nightclub. Show-up in your bathing suit, if ya want. Many were dining wearing t-shirts. There is just no decency or respectful attire within restaurants, anymore in a Progressive society. The interior decor, needs a drastic overhaul. I felt as if entering a dungeon of no return. It did not feel as if entering the galley of a pirate ship. Seating as well, was uncomfortable. Our butts were numb in a few minutes. For the pricing in the menu, the food needs to be better. Still baffled by there only being two scallops on the seafood platter. I receive far more at the local Friday fish-fry in my hometown. Not to mention a tastier, larger, fresh Haddock fillet, for less than $40.00. Captain John's restaurant has exceeded it's life expectancy. And continuing to make patrons suffer. The worse is that spending this much money, per person, at any restaurant, needs a manager, preferrably the owner(s), on the dining-room floor. This was absent, and usally is absent at Captain John's. Owners must be too busy swimming-in the profits of charging too much for tasteless frozen food. Captain John's relies solely on the name, and the attraction of Sylvan Beach. I doubt many tourists bother returning to Captain John's a second time in a single Summer. Oh. One more thing: The next time a few employees, decide not to show-up to work on a weekend, have some fortitude, and terminate their employment. Waiting forty-five minutes for entrees, was reason enough for a discount on expensive...
Read moreWords can't even Express my dissatisfaction with the overall experience. The outside seating was nice except for the army of ants we got sat next to that I had to stop the waitress from walking through. When we got seated it was about 70 outside with a breeze which was nice when we're finally left 3 hours later it was 53 degrees outside and my wife was freezing and hungry since we had to take the food to go. It was 90+ minutes waiting for the food with the waitress disappearing for 45+ minutes and were only got it once I went inside and complained and watched both hostesses that I made eye contact with one that stood right next to me completely avoid me. After complaining they offered a table inside even though there were multiple other people waiting for a table waiting more than an hour but magically there wasd a table for me and my freezing wife. After explaining to the manager I drove 90+ minutes away for my 16th wedding anniversary to go there I get told everyone drives far away what can she do to make me happy. Sorry the manager shouldn't be asking what she can do to make a customer happy she should be offering something for the terrible experience I have experienced so far so I gave her my cc and took the food to the car where my wife was warming up thinking she might do something but apparently not because when I got back and looked at the charge it was full price for everything. Well I told the manager I don't mind paying full price for good food/ experience but that certainly wasn't the case here. Will never...
Read moreMy husband and I had date night last night here as we usually can't wait to have our yearly summer dinner here, it was by far the worst dinner we ever had in the years we've been coming. As the indoor atmosphere is awesome, it was a beautiful night to eat outside which we did for our first time. Our waitress Rachel was amazing and so were the drinks. However my husband ordered a shrimp appetizer and the prime rib and lobster tail dinner. The prime rib was the worst he's ever had and the lobster tail was rotten, shell-meat and all. The shell was slimy, discolored and meat was rubbery and discolored. As we were reluctant to say anything at first (as we don't complain) the shrimp was just as bad (warm and rubbery) las the lobster tail was. We sent it back and just asked for the check. Our waitress did agree with the food issues, asked if he wanted a new lobster tail (which he told her no) and brought back to the cook. The cook sent out another lobster tail and it was just as bad. That also sent back and was told management was there last night and she was going to also bring to their attention and they'd come speak to us. Nobody from there showed up but our very expensive check did for the most horrible dinner ever with nothing taken off. This will be the last time we come to Captain John's as the food has been getting worse, poor management for not taking care of the issue/customer and the ridiculous amount of money spent. Thank you Rachel for your kindnes and trying to help, shame on you Captain John's for the rest of the...
