For 6 years, the El Diablo Burrito has cockily enjoyed an undefeated winning streak against weak willed stomachs at Mexicali Blue in Wappingers Falls, NY. This demonic named challenge allows competitors up to 30 brief minutes to consume: -One 4lb El Diablo burrito stuffed with their choice of chicken, steak, or pork -One half pound each of house slaw as well ad refried beans -One ghost pepper chile infused brownie Successful completion earns you a free meal, spot on the wall of fame, and everlasting glory. Failure brings forth a 30 dollar bill and residency on the wall of SHAME. Eager to give this challenge a shot, I drove out to the restaurant with my buds ready to devour the mondo burrito. El Diablo came out of the oven at little over FIVE pounds! Stuffed to maximum capacity with so many delicious components, from seasoned rice, melty cheese, perfectly seared HUNKS of chicken, and some stellar pickled red onions as well! The beastly utrito came with a giant bowl of house slaw DRENCHED in hot sauce and an equally big bowl of tender and sweet refried beans. To complete my monstrous meal, l concluded the challenge with a soft and cakey brownie supposedly infused with ghost pepper. I ate it too fast to really feel any heat, I’m also no stranger to spice. I was happy to set a new record of finishing the meal in 17:46, earning me a free meal and killer new shirt! Head chef Chris, inventor and original defeater of the challenge, came out to congratulate me gave me a full history of the El Diablo challenge along with many stories of food challenge successes and fails. He was impressed with my time and amazed I could ingest so must despite my size. He was also disgusted to see me eat an extra brownie and churro on top of the challenge! He’ll have to make a harder challenge for me next time (hopefully including the churros which were AMAZING!) Overall, the food at Mexicali Blue tasted unreal. I highly recommend their burritos, diablo and normal sized, as well as their churros and brownies! The entire staff were beyond friendly, accommodating, and encouraging to my food challenge attempt and even allowed me to record it for my YouTube channel. Whether you’re a competitive eater or just a hungry fiend, Mexicali Blue and El Diablo absolutely belong on your bucket list. If regular portions are more your speed, you will also be well served here with their delicious array of tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and custom hot sauces!

Another time I've eaten here regretting my decision. The last 3 times times I've eaten here I have given them the benefit of the doubt seeing they have gotten the food network award. I will NOT go here ever again. I ordered the BBQ Brisket($8) and The Brooklyn($7.50 pork belly) tacos. Each price is for one taco. The BBQ brisket was loaded to the hilt but lacked any flavor. The Brooklyn was just inedible. Prior to taking a bite I said to my wife that it looked very dry. Not only was it very dry, but it also tasted like extremely burnt bacon. I tried to fight my way through it but could only eat half. My wife had the Shrimp taco which she enjoyed but did not even attempt to eat the Ahi Tuna taco. She ordered the taco medium but it came extremely rare almost raw. I enjoy a tuna steak rare but this tuna was close to swimming off of the plate. Each time we've eaten here, the wait staff has taken our drink order, then dinner order, and come back after we've eaten no matter how busy they are. My wife wanted to send back the tuna but did not have the chance since the waitress never came back until we were finished I honestly left the restaurant feeling like i had to throw up in order to feel better. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for good Mexican food. Mexicali Blue no longer is looking to serve quality food but to only ride on their laurels of previous awards.

Disgusted with service tonight. The extremely light cheese they added was burnt and meal was missing the salad. Called and they said I could pick it up and I did only to get home and see the whole point of why I went back out to get the salad was for something specific in it was MISSING. Seemed intentional. Called to let them know I didn’t want anything but was disappointed that I had to drive there 2xs b/c of THEIR mistake and I ended up still without what I paid for and b/c they have caller ID they ignored the call. I know this b/c they answered from another number. Waste of $20 and the rest spent on sides b/c I can’t even eat with how annoyed I am and I wonder what was put in the salad if they were so annoyed to leave out a main ingredient. I’m extremely disappointed as I’ve ordered from here a lot, but won’t again after this.

3/24/18 - When I tried to call and place an order for pickup, the person who answered could not hear/understand me due to the noise from the live music/entertainment. I tried calling back but only had the same result- the person could not take my order properly because they could not hear what I was ordering due to the noise at the restaurant.

I decided to try ordering online ( first and last time I will ever do this) I placed the order for 4- burritos and added a note with special requests for the last one) the order confirmation stated 4 burritos @ $12each. Shortly after placing the order I received a call from the same person I had tried to place the original order with “to confirm” what I ordered because “the ticket printed strangely” we confirmed verbally 4 burritos- three exactly as listed on the menu, and 1 - just chicken lettuce rice/beans.

I arrived to pick up the order, the person who had confirmed the order with me on the phone handed the TO GO bag to me and said I was all set, and apologized for all of the confusion— showing me the ticket where they had hand written the 1-special request at the bottom after confirming the order over the phone. I drove away...

Much to my surprise - a short while later, when I opened the bag and started handing out the burritos... there were only 3! Seriously, after all of that!?! To top it all off — I immediately called the restaurant and spoke to the SAME person and expressed my frustration again- that after everything the order was still wrong and I was charged for 4/got 3 and wanted a refund. After being put back on hold, I was told that because I had ordered online—they couldnt issue me a refund but would give me a credit to use the next time I came in to the restaurant... I feel the need to share my experience so that others don’t have to suffer through this in the future. I will no longer be recommending Mexicali...
