First time here today. I came to buy Brunswick stew for my mom because she desired it after her appointment. So, I came inside to buy the stew for my mother and, regrettably, I bought a rib sandwich with "garlic" bread and cole slaw for my lunch. The stew looked so much better than the baby back ribs; hence, the one star rating. I will share photos of what came to me. The baby back ribs were lukewarm and somewhat dry, definitely NOT juicy and fresh. The sauce on the ribs had been resting on the meat for a while; not fresh. The garlic bread had a faint garlic flavor and the butter was more oil than cream. I now assume they had used margarine to toast the two bread slices. What I thought was extra BBQ sauce cup was actually Brunswick stew, which tasted like ketchup mixed with something odd and much different from the stew in the quart-sized cup. It didn't taste good. The coleslaw was the only satisfying food on the plate followed by the "garlic" bread then the ribs (thumbs down). The Brunswick stew was okay, not great. The flavor was semi-smoky and the corn included looked like canned corn but the onions were fresh. I thought when I tasted it, 'I can cook better than this.' The stew includes chicken pieces, shredded pork and probably another meat along with stewed tomatoes, onions and canned corn. To my surprise, there was a bone found in the stew (pictured). I caution you to eat slowly and chew well. It needed seasonings besides a little bit of smoked meat as flavoring. The female who registered my order gave me my change but not my receipt. With me being there for the first time, and I told the cashier and server at the take-out counter, I expected to be shown how takeout orders are handled properly. I was told crackers or corn muffins were the options for the stew. I had to ask for napkins for the stew and I forgot to ask about the crackers. I don't plan to return and I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone that likes good-tasting fresh food. The place had dust and cobwebs around and on the empty register plus dried sauce. That was my clue but I ignored it for my mom's sake. I reached out to management via email, and no response was given. There are real and better barbecue places throughout Georgia, so it is odd this place ever got a good reputation or continusl business.

A BBQ icon for many reasons. Barbecue joints are like coffee houses, there are good ones and bad ones, and the mom and pops are always more interesting than the chains, but at the end of the day there's just one of them that works a little better for you. The Old Hickory House has found its crowd and is always busy. Some customers have a favorite waitress. There are a lot of seniors and working folks just looking for a good, filling meal at a reasonable price. The service is steady and sensible. It feels like your mama is just trying to give you a good meal and a smile so you can get back to work. Some young gal bellied up to the counter today and started to tell the waitress how she wanted her meat. The old gal said, "Honey, it ain't like that here. This is BBQ." Really. The waitress handed me a steak knife for my ribs, but the tender, sticky, sweet meat just eased off the bone with every bite. The green beans are cooked down with a nice pork flavor. The collards are neither sweet nor vinegary, but they have pepper sauce if you like that. The slaw is that finely chopped southern mayonnaise with a little bit of sweetness in it. I've had the beef and pork which is more shredded than chopped, which leaves it a little dry without the sauce. BBQ is kinda personal. You might not like it but decades of loyal customers say it's a winner for many.

First and last visit, very disappointing. 1. The coffee was served out of a styrofoam cup. 2. We ordered French toast with bacon and a salmon croquette, pancakes “Kid cakes”, and a Country fried steak dinner with collards and fried okra. Once the waiter put the ticket in, the food was already prepared and sitting for at-least 10 minutes.. the gravy developed a fat cap. Collards were tangy and tasted like they were canned. The salmon cake tasted like it was precooked and refrigerated. The cornbread was dry and the garlic bread was extra buttery with no garlic. 3. When it was time to pay for the bill, the waitress over charged us for multiple things. She charged us for a kids meal, we ordered pancakes. Then she charged me for a cowboy size country steak dinner but i asked for a regular size. The manager “corrected” the mistake but it was still wrong. On the bill the manager charged me $4.99 for Kid cakes but on their menu it specifically states $4.49. This is why it’s so important to look at your check thoroughly because businesses try to take advantage of you. The lady at the front doesn’t have much enthusiasm or hospitality, very rude. Overall, we enjoyed the fried okra and pancakes. The atmosphere was calm, and quiet. Due to this experience, we will not return nor recommend to anyone.

I’m not sparing this review at NO CHANCE…all one stars for this joint….I really don’t care how long this establishment has been serving mediocre barbecue…and probably considered a neighborhood staple for barbecue. My experience was HORRIBLE! 😩🤮 My father opted to treat us because he does frequent this spot when in the area, but today was the WRONG day…if you’re looking for GRADE A barbecue don’t be fooled by the hickory chips you smell in the air…keep driving. 🫠 I called to report this experience 45 minutes after receiving this “to go” order and was told by Shirley, that the manager (Greg) stated he “COULDN’T or let’s say “WOULDN’T” come to the phone..without any explanation or possibly a better time to call back (first red flag to incompetence and bad management). I called back about an hour later and was able to speak to the manager -(Greg), wherein I felt like this whole ordeal and inconvenience was a HUGE MISTAKE just to to even report my level of unsatisfaction. Greg told me, “it is IMPOSSIBLE to provide quality food for 300 ppl in a day, and that he was sorry my food wasn’t satisfactory,” due to the business being very busy today. 🤔 (never tell a customer “Impossible for quality service “ what are you in business for…you might fall short of the mark but you should strive for excellence and resolve all issues with “greatness” in mind-(TIP for you Greg) I went on to say that as a first time customer and being told this by the manager was unsatisfactory, that’s like playing Russian roulette with my taste buds and my father’s wallet. I proceeded to say, I’m not looking for incentives on top of incentives but the food served” to go”was an “epic fail”…cold, the ribs tasted like they were cooked last Thursday, with sticky, gummy bar-be-cue sauce, and tasteless…from what I did eat, it’s a wonder I didn’t get sick. 🤢 I told the manager, I traveled from McDonough to meet my father to receive my food to go…manager’s response…”I understand, I live in Locust Groce” so I know..but you’ll have to bring the food back tomorrow (Mother’s Day) and I can issue a total refund or re-prepare the order…are you really serious…who would take a chance on that…and why would I inconvenience myself on “Mother’s Day to return back up there with this two-week old barbecue that you should be sanctioned for..only for you to throw it in the trash in my face before you start the new order. I’ve never encountered such horrible customer service, so I suggest you “higher ups” that may read this…go back to the drawing board and “train” your managerial staff on excellent customer service…because you lost one today…I’ll never return. ✌🏽 So for those reading this review and has never set foot in this establishment…KEEP DRIVING....

I enjoy coming to Hickory House often. I love their breakfasts and their BBQ is good. All the people in my party love going there too. Recently when we went, one of the older waitresses kept yelling at two large parties who were waiting to be seated to "clear the path for the wait staff" and "move out of the way." Truthfully, we were not in the way and we were sitting on benches provided by HH for people who were waiting. We got out of "her" way, but that still was not enough. She continued to yell at customer who were waiting and were, "In her way." You could tell all the people who were waiting were offended by her tone and lack of customer service voice. It was very offensive. No management was present and someone in another waiting group took it upon himself to address the waitress directly. She argued with him and blew him off. She then went over to tell the other waitresses what had happened and they had a good laugh. All this happened in front of the waiting customers. It was very rude to be laughed at by the wait staff. I could overhear the waitress say, "I will do what I d* well please. He can just get out of my way!"

We sat down and had our meal which was very good. Although I could not help but notice that the orders took longer than expected. Our server was top notch and on the ball. I did not get his name, but he is a tall, skinny young man with glasses. Best staff member in the building. I have had other wait staff, but this young man was great.

The food is always good and I highly recommend you try it. However, please note the parking lot is very limited so you might have trouble finding a parking space or a handicapped space. If you do not want to listen to the rude waitresses, consider a take out order. The people working the cash register are always kind...
