Baby Café Hong Kong Bistro — Restaurant in Union City

My kids like the Kimchi fried rice of this place so we decided to try as the whole family for dinner. The place is quite packed for a Friday night. The prices are quite reasonable, the service is a little slow at time. My daughter tried the sizzling short ribs, it wasn’t sizzling, cold actually and the ribs was tasteless with still rib raw smell. She didn’t eat but a few bites. I felt sorry for her and let her to order something else, some spicy baby squids and fish balls deep fried, she said the squid was ok but the fish balls were salty. Then she tried the most expensive dessert ever, bread ice scream and it’s good with large portion. By herself, she blew over $40 for her dinner. My son was safe by ordering his favorite Fried rice. My wife ordered the house special noodles soup and she said it was ok. I ordered the beef stew chow mein and it was quite tasty. This is catered for young and specific clientele who know the food well. I’m not going to return unless I want the beef stew, but most Chinese restaurants have great beef stew. I went to place an order on the phone with Baby Cafe at 6:02pm that’s when one of the waitress answered my phone call to receive my take out order. I order beef chow fun and dried scallop egg white fried rice. When I came back home and open the container, the fried rice didn’t have any Choy sum (Chinese vegetable) head and the beef chow fun wasn’t proportional right. The beef chow fun was mostly filled with green onion and onion. There was only six pieces of beef in that dish. Some pieces of the beef was coated into some chili oil and some shake of pepper. And I called after my dinner when I found my issue at 8:22pm to discuss my concern on the dish. The waiter had answered my call and speak the chef to see what the problem is. They didn’t escalate the issue and left me to find the manager to speak to him.

Boston does not have any HK cafes so when I found out that one opened up in Allston, I had to go. When we go there, it was not too busy on a Saturday during normal lunch hour. The host wasn’t too enthusiastic and the overall service was severely lacking. They never checked on any tables and never refilled water. That’s fine, hope the food is good at least.

To our surprise, the food was mediocre at best. The fish balls were sooooo tiny. I’ve never seen anything like it. The curry sauce wasn’t tasty. The pasta, baked rice, and cubed rice were alright. The sauces seemed to lack something, not the usual Portuguese sauce or bolognese sauce that you normally would find at a HK cafe. However, there was a surprising element, and why I didn’t rate it a 2 was because the meats were juicy.

The atmosphere is nice with an aesthetic fake tree in the middle.

Overall, I can’t recommend this place especially since there are so many different restaurant...
