Being borned in Perú and knowing my Peruvian cuisine very well. I don't think this a good place to get your roasted chicken. The portions are very small compared to other places . And the hike on the price in insane, me not being cheap at all when it comes to food. Usually at a good Peruvian restaurant you will find a whole roasted chicken two side choices at around $19 to $20. Here the price is $24 and they only give you three small sauces to take out. ( the green sauce for the chicken makes %70 of the whole Peruvian chicken experience) you will have to pay if you need extra, which is not normal that you need to pay for extra sauce. I totally despise that on a restaurant. Imagine paying extra for ketchup for your fries. I bought two whole chickens $50. I do not recommend this place. Go to other Peruvian places. I'm definitely not ordering food from this place. Go to the one on Paterson.

Lena y Carbon never misses. I’ve been here three times now and it’s always solid. Today we grabbed the chaufa mixto and lomo saltado—both packed with flavor. Only (minor) complaint: the steak in the lomo was a bit overcooked, but nothing that ruined it. Portions are generous and definitely worth the price. Pickup was smooth as usual—they quoted 20 mins, but I showed up in 15 and it was already ready. Can’t say much about dining in since I’ve only done takeout, but the staff has always been super friendly and helpful. If you’re craving Peruvian food or just want a great meal, this spot’s worth checking out.

Unjust Practices and Dubious Ethics at This Peruvian Restaurant - A Word of Caution

Regrettably, my recent experience with this Peruvian establishment was one of the most negative I have ever had, where gross misconduct and shady business practices have cast a dark shadow over my dining experience.

The restaurant's duplicitous pricing policy a sharp departure from standard norms of honesty and transparency in the food industry. The price listed on the menu has been significantly lower than the one presented on the bill. This discrepancy is not only unprofessional but also a blatant breach of trust and possibly violates consumer protection laws.

To compound the problem, this restaurant has introduced an 'automatic gratuity' clause in their payment protocol. This would be fine if the practice adhered to accepted standards, but unfortunately, it doesn't. The gratuity is calculated on the inflated bill amount plus the tax, a crafty maneuver that often pushes the tipping percentage well beyond 20%. It's an unsolicited burden on the customer's wallet, a glaring instance of exploitation.

When confronted, the waiter casually brushed it off, pointing to a barely visible disclaimer at the bottom of the menu stating that prices were subject to change at any time. This unfair tactic is not just deceptive, but it also potentially violates basic consumer protection laws.

Clearly, the owners of this establishment have not acquainted themselves with the legal principles surrounding commerce. To educate them and others who may not be aware, the definition of an "offer" in the context of trade is "The act or instance of presenting something for acceptance." In the restaurant industry, a menu falls under this category, serving as an offer, notice, and sign for Consumer Contract Warranty and Notice Act purposes. The act of arbitrarily changing prices goes against the very spirit of this principle.

I intend to file a formal complaint against these illicit practices with the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs. The food industry must remain vigilant against such 'bad actors' and prevent them from tarnishing the reputation of countless honest and respectable businesses.

If you have been a victim of these dubious practices, I urge you to do the same. As consumers, it is incumbent on us to ensure that we receive the services we are promised and the respect we are due. Until such time, I strongly advise you to steer clear of this establishment and seek out the numerous other genuine, respectful, and law-abiding Peruvian eateries that genuinely represent the vibrant culinary culture of Peru.

Also, the food quality is subpar at best.

Until such malpractices are rectified, I recommend caution while considering this restaurant. Plenty of establishments value their customers, uphold the spirit of Peruvian hospitality, and truly deserve...

Happy 2021... Pollo a la Brasa is one of my favorite dishes, I have been eating Pollo a la Brasa since I was in my mother's womb...I believe it's when I learn to eat, taste, and love Pollo a la Brasa... If you are A Pollo a la Brasa eater, lover...Leña y Carbon is the winner cooking the best succulent Pollo a la Brasa...it is served with fries, and salad prepared with tomato, lettuce, shredded carrots tossed in ranch dressing like... I also had the Jalea, it's not favorite but it was decent, I didn't like the fish, it was to fishy for me,I believe, the fish on the plate was Tilapia, well, Tilapia has a sharp, bold flavour...with a hint of earthiness...not the fish that I like. I'd not recommend you the Jalea, but if you are a Jalea lover...go for it. Also another thing worth mentioning is about the Ensalada a la Criolla, it was served Fresh... I really appreciate that! And the limes were also fresh! Most of the restaurants serve oxidize limes and lemons but you dont! Thank you!

With regards to service, the waitress was very polite, attentive, descriptive...Good Job! She came up to my table to offer us some fresh napkins...Details! I love it!

Overall, I would definitely recommend you all this Restaurant "Leña al Carbon." The Pollo a la Brasa is the king of the kings of NY and New Jersey! If you can, try to stop by during the weekends, why? Because it'll be served to you right after it has been finished cooking. Remember, during the week, there is a high probability that you'll get served Pollo a la Brasa not Hot nor succulent, and probably being sitting in the warmer machine for long time!

Just one glitch...please control the...

If you’re looking for delicious Peruvian food with generous portions at affordable prices, Leña y Carbón in Union City, NJ is an excellent choice. I’ve visited this place several times, and without a doubt, it is one of the best Leña y Carbón locations.

The food is simply outstanding. The tallarines, arroz chaufa, and rotisserie chicken are top-tier. The Peruvian seasoning is authentic, with a homemade touch that keeps you coming back for more. Plus, the prices are very reasonable for the quality and quantity of food they serve.

The restaurant has a cozy and pleasant atmosphere, with simple yet well-done decor. However, the service could use some improvement. During my last visit, my table was dirty when I arrived, which was not ideal. That being said, Carlos, my server (Colombian), was amazing—very attentive, friendly, and helpful, making the experience much more enjoyable.

One downside of the restaurant is that there is no parking lot, and finding a parking spot in the area can be quite challenging. Despite this, the location is pretty appealing, as it’s on an avenue full of Hispanic businesses, making it an interesting place to walk around and find unique items that you wouldn’t see elsewhere.

Overall, Leña y Carbón in Union City is a highly recommended spot if you want to enjoy authentic Peruvian food without breaking the bank. It’s not a fancy place, but it’s definitely better than many so-called “upscale” Latin restaurants that end up being disappointing. If they improve the service and table cleanliness, it would be a perfect experience.

I’ll definitely be back for more rotisserie chicken and arroz chaufa....
