Northside Tap — Restaurant in Valparaiso

My wife and I stopped at Northside Tap Room on 4/23/11 while cruising through Indiana on the motorcycle. We both found this place to be a lot of fun. There is nothing fancy about this place, nor does it pretend to be. Several locals were drinking their draft beers out of clear plastic Dixie Cups. There is nothing pretentious about this place. If you have a good attitude the locals are extremely friendly, the bar tender is really sweet, and everybody just wants to have a good time. The beer was really cheap, the 1/2 pound burgers are delicious, and the wings were really good. I think our Bud long necks were like $3/piece, so very reasonable. My wife and I split an order of wings, each had a burger (adding onions, bacon, mushrooms, fries, & coleslaw), and 2 beers each. Our total was around 30-35 bucks. So not too bad at all. I could see this place being overcrowded at night with local college kids, that could change the experience slightly. We stopped in around 2 or 3 on a Sat afternoon and it was pretty cool, with just the older/local patrons. This is the kind of place where you can kick your feet up, and be yourself. This place is a dive, but living in Chicago we get our fair share of yuppy bars. Would definitely recommend and will definitely go back when in the area again. Good turnout, good music, yet very slow service! If there was more bartenders behind the counter servicing all the patrons around the bar, they would get orders out quicker and probably make better tips. It was packed the Saturday I went for my first time, and the area was literally shoulder to shoulder. Walking space is limited, it was really humid and ceilings are low. A pretty typical dive bar. Pretty quiet if you get off work and want a few drinks and go home. Decent food for the price. Service is really decent during the weekdays. But the bartenders get very overwhelmed during Fridays and Saturdays. Friday nights turns into a little club at around 12 pm. Somepinball and dart machines.
