This was a big dinner for us, out 10 year wedding anniversary. We picked one of the best restaurants to go to. Our server Gabby was amazing, she helped explain the food and the process to us which was super cool. This restaurant is fancy but also relaxed, they have found a wonderful balance. We ordered a lot of food since we are foodies! For the appetizers we got the Oysters and Calamari. Both were great, that Tartar sauce with the Calamari is on point! The complementary bread is super tasty, and bottomless. We opted not to get more since it is filling. We also ordered the table side Cesar salad, it was ok. Left a funny taste in my mouth. Sorta sour. When ordering our steak my husband and I both ordered Medium since our server recommended doing over a little bit. She said they run on the cooler side, Less cooked. We normally would order medium rare. Mine came out perfect, and my husbands steak came out basically fully cooked. It looked like a meat loaf. We were a little disappointed by the inconsistency with the meat. He ended up eating the center out of it and setting the rest to the side. We were pleased when they refunded us for his steak since it was not cooked right, they even offered to bring another one out but we just wanted to keep the mood light and wrap up our dinner. With his dinner he also got the lobster added on and it was great. Now, before we left my husbands stomach started hurting. He was sick all night with food poisoning. We are not sure what caused it, the only thing that he had that was different was the lobster. I give a good review because the atmosphere is amazing, the staff is amazing, most of the food was amazing. But something was wrong with the prep. Honestly speaking, We will probably not go back. For that price we expect excellence, and there just seemed to be a lack of attention to the food which cause the overcooked steak, and...
Read moreThis place absolutely ruined Mother's Day. It was the worst experience in a restaurant I've ever had. I took my mom and family out to what I thought was a nice place for dinner on the holiday with a time reserved for 645, thinking that this would give us plenty of time to dine and finish in time to walk the waterfront and watch the sunset. Despite having a reservation, they didn't seat us until 30 minutes after we arrived. After we placed our orders, the server returned to inform us that 3/5 items we ordered were out of stock because the chef didn't prepare well enough for holiday-level orders. So we re-did our orders and waited. I don't know what the delay was but the wait was so long that the sun had already set by the time we finally got our food, which was upsetting and ruined the rest of the evening plan. To top it off, my mom's steak wasn't cooked the way she had requested it and we had already been forced to sit there for an obscenely long time and didn't want to delay just going home even further by asking them to take it back. In the end, she went home hungry on a day that was supposed to celebrate her.
I felt bad for our server who was great at her job but had the misfortune to be working at such a disorganized and messy place that she was no doubt on the receiving end of multiple complaints that day. The food was nothing special, absolutely not worth the wait. Highly recommend booking elsewhere, especially for holidays.
Management offered a gift card as compensation for the awful experience so we decided to give another El Gaucho location a chance, this time in Portland. This ended with a horribly awkward experience dealing with the management at that location when I found out that the gift card Vancouver El Gaucho had given me was invalid. Safe to say I won’t ever waste my...
Read moreExcellent Top Shelf Dining Experience finally in Vancouver. I'm a long time El Gaucho fan who stopped going to the Portland location because of worsening issues involved with driving into Portland and , more importantly, the increasingly pathetic "Portland downtown experience" . The minute you enter El Gaucho Waterfront, you feel welcome . The initial impact of the décor and ambiance of the guitar music was refreshingly classy . The subdued lighting and the signature open kitchen just add to the El Gaucho experience. The booth where I was seated was perfect, giving me a great view of the dining area. Table service was prompt with a great start consisting of garlic bread and drinks. I ordered the Grilled Pork Belly and the Steak Diane with Lobster Mashed Potatoes. The Pork Belly was decent but in my opinion , lacked something. The Steak Diane service tableside on the other hand was an over -the -top excellent steak experience. Super tender filets serve with an expertly crafted flambeed Diane sauce accompanied by that wonderful Lobster mashed potatoes. The meal ended with the signature Bananas Sherwood also flambeed tableside by the experienced and accomplished Stephan. Excellent!!!!! Service was impeccable----- always available BUT not hovering. Again, Stephan is the man. Perfect service! Ambiance , as already mentioned , was perfect. Noise level was low and subdued which allowed for great table conversation . Handicap doable and recommended. Valet service was available. Price was definitely on the higher end but reasonable considering the service and quality of the dining experience. El Gaucho is an absolutely great addition to the Vancouver Waterfront dining scene!!! Final take-----👊👊👊BAM---GO!!! Enjoy El Gaucho , especially if you are celebrating...
