Read moreLocation & overall decor: 5 stars. The place is gorgeous, and it is located on the waterfront so needless to say it’s in a prime location. It is next door to Wildfin so you can’t miss it. Upscale modern restaurant that is catered to adults considering the menu and the waiters will tell you also which is exactly what he said to us because we had 2 kids. I feel like they are mostly the Brazilian bread and some of the pork belly small plate and tortillas with a avocado salsa. There is an outside deck overlooking the waterfront (I didn’t get to go out there we dined inside) but I’m sure at night it is a very beautiful view. The restaurant is on the 2nd floor. I like the corner with the painted wings on the wall near the bougie expensive tequila wall encased in glass display. It is good for pics. Cons- the music is a little too loud. Conversing with your party may involve shouting a little but the vibe/ambience was good, very chill and pleasant. Food: 3 stars for taste and pricing. So the small plates are better in my opinion than ordering the regular ones, at least the chicken. Pros: best thing I ate there was the Brazilian bread which comes as these small round meatball sized bread pieces. They get 4 stars for me because of the texture which was almost a little too chewy but I liked the flavor. Empanadas were meh. I have eaten a lot of empanadas and these were nothing to write home about. It’s made of short rib meat apparently and I expected a lot more flavor but it was lacking. Crispy ribs were okay, almost a little tough and of course I liked the crisp texture but again it didn’t have that wow factor. Everything I ate (and we tasted alot of food that day) was not terrible but also lacked that wow factor. I waits for that Cuban or Latin explosion of flavor and everything seemed mediocre. Lacking a punch in your face spicy-ness and awesome explosion of flavor but at best everything seems watered down for me. I was disappointed. Not enough heat or pizazz for me but I like bold strong flavors so maybe for others it could be bomb but if your like me then well, it might be disappointing or fall short on flavor. Pricing: well we spent $600 on food and booze. Small plates were a plenty that we ordered and they are all like over $15 and they come in single portion sizes although some of them we split. My total party size was 6 adults and 2 kids. So I guess that total seemed about right. The booze ordered is a factor too 😅🍹Although thinking back I could’ve done without ordering regular entree which was the chicken and be warned 🙅🏽♀️🙅🏽♀️do not order it!! It’s is hecka dry and no flavor. 🍸 Mixed drinks are of course going to cost you and the overall consensus was they were good. I even ordered a virgin pina colada (I had to work in a few hours so I thought I needed to be sober 😉😅) but it was really good the ingredient were fresh and not overly sweet with the pineapple and coconut. So yeah service was fine, our waiter was attentive, parking is aleays a mad house down at the waterfront so get there early to find some parking we had to park on the outer parking area because it was jam packed but this was around 5-6pm on a week day. Make reservations ahead of time they are usually full it seems. So yeah food flavor and pricing is why I give this joint a 3.75-4 stars because if you are hoping for Spanish authentic flavors go somewhere else. Save your wallet. This place I think is good as a happy hour place which I think is what they are geared toward but I would more likely recommend Amaros table for flavor, the bar food here is always tasty and filling and more budget friendly. But Dosalas wins for location and the restaurants overall decor/look, with the white booths/tables, high ceilings and chandelier with large picture windows overlooking the river on the waterfront so it’s definitely got that romantic vibe and beautiful views. It’s also got an upstairs area I’ve seen from our table which probably accommodates smaller parties who can be seated above and look down onto everyone else in the...
One of our favorite restaurants over the years was Toro Bravo in Portland. We loved the tapas style dishes and would typically order several, happy to spend the kind of money for a great meal, When they closed permanently last year, we were sad.
I first heard about Dos Alas last week and after reading the rave reviews and seeing the style of food, I was super excited to make a reservation! Making reservations 4 days in advance, we had the option of 415 or 845 for dinner on a Sunday night. 415 it was!! As we waited in the entry, lots of people coming into the restaurant. Everyone dressed nicely except for a pair of women in workout leggings, Nikes and hoodies. They definitely looked out of place. Most had reservations but a few walk-ins turned away.
We were taken to our seats, and you can tell they were still figuring things out (being a new restaurant). The person seating was directed to set us at a high table but... I'm currently in a wheelchair so that wouldn't work =)
We started with drinks and they are expensive!! Cocktails all listed at $20-$24 a piece. They had some punch bowls designed for 2 people, priced at $40 each, My husband got a standard margarita, nothing fancy, and it was $15! Any other bar this should have been $5-$8.
If you have not been to this kind of restaurant before, it's typical to order throughout the meal and each person will generally order 2-3 dishes each. The food is delivered to your table as soon as its ready, Everything is then shared family style. The server will also let you know this.
To start, our food order was Brazilian cheese bread, short rib empanadas, street corn and pork belly skewers. The cheese bread was jealous but as I bit into it, liquid came out onto my plate and my shirt. I am not sure if it was oil from the deep fry or from the garlic butter. The price for the bread was also high I thought. $8 for four pieces of bread, each about the size of a donut hole. The empanadas were really tasty but the filling was barely warm. Since they were served to us as soon as they were ready, I would have thought they would be hotter. The street corn was tasty but I am a spice wuss. I can't handle hot/spicy foods so could only eat 2 forkfuls. My husband gladly ate the rest. I was really looking forward to the pork belly but this dish didn't have a lot of flavor. It was sweet with the sauce but the pork itself was mediocre, We also ordered the lamb chops which I really liked, but I did not feel it was a $22 dish.
Overall, I felt the prices were too high for the food served, I don't mind a high dollar meal if the food measures up. This meal did not We spent just under $100 ($97) and we left hungry. I could have ordered more food but I wasn't willing to spend more money there. (I went home and had a 50 cent can of tomato soup and it was more satisfying.)
Dos Alas seems like it's just trying too hard. It's following the trend of the overpriced restaurants on the waterfront, but based on other reviews, people are gladly paying these prices! The decor is bright and young and feels more like a martini bar rather than a restaurant. If you're trying to impress a date, this could be a...
Read moreThis was a WOW for atmosphere. Absolutely beautiful and one felt the upscale and upbeat vibe as soon as one walked upstairs. We visited on a Saturday night. We were seated right away with our reservation. It was a full house. It was really busy. Staff was very welcoming and friendly.
First, I have to rave about their specialty cocktail presentations. The smoked old fashioned is an event. We saw a couple other special cocktails served with quite the unique deliveries.
We were seated where the outdoor fire terrace is. The area is open air. It was a chilly October evening. The view was closed off by shades that helped a bit with the chill, but sitting right next to the shade was still a little chilly. We had the shade raised for a bit, but it was too chilly to enjoy the view. I think I would recommend asking to sit inside with the windows. Consider the current temperature.
That being said, I thought our server was a little disconnected from us. We had to flag him down twice for basic needs. Bread for the clams and muscles and then later for fresh plates for the paella which were never brought. I was asked if I wanted a second glass of wine when we were about finished with our paella, a little late and I just didn’t flag him down a 3rd time. I feel the server should have asked as the paella was served. Oh…sorry, the server didn’t bring the paella, and the server didn’t appear until we were about done…that’s what happened.
When we ordered, we ordered the steak salad, clams and muscles, and the paella with lobster. What we experienced was our food brought out almost all together at once. There wasn’t quite enough time to completely enjoy each course. We felt hurried to eat and move on to the next.
The steak salad was fresh and the steak well prepared. Absolutely delicious. Clams and muscles in a perfect chorizo sauce. The sauce was where we needed a bit more bread to sop up as it was too wonderful to leave behind. The paella with lobster, though the soccarat was perfectly formed on the bottom, the shell fish on top, however,, was overall a bit dried out, including the fingerling lobster tail, and I mean fingerling. Very small. I wouldn’t add lobster again.
With the two previous shared courses, three of us were fully sated sharing the paella. Four would have been fine to share everything. Dessert was the Marionberry cheese cake with a spicy strawberry sauce. Very nice and just right to finish off a lovely dinner.
We had ordered dessert cocktails, but they arrived almost after we finished our cheesecake. They were the chocolate martinis. Not very flavorful. I thought it was rather watery tasting.
Other than the pressure of a busy Saturday night, I would indeed recommend Dosalas. Truly, the cocktails and food were fantastic overall. I would probably try a week night. It deserves a second chance to really experience their true experience. We...
