I've been going to Café Nouveau for nearly 20 years. It's sad to say this but they have gone way down. The service was excellent as always but the food was horrible. It was a party of three and I had country-fried steak and eggs, my friend had the Mediterranean omelet and my sister had a ham and egg omelet. My eggs were over hard but they tasted like they were fried in butter. Buttery fried eggs are not my thing. The country-fried steak had no taste. Unseasoned coating and the steak was also absent any seasonings. Even the toast was not good, it was cold and served with whipped spread which I don't believe was butter. I'm glad I did not order the beignets because the coffee was not drinkable. It was basically water with a little coffee added. The Mediterranean omelet was equally horrible. The description did not match what was served. I think they used canned tomatoes, I did not see any olives or artichokes either, it just wasn't good. The only meal that was satisfactory was the ham and cheese omelet. The bill came to $85.02. I paid but didn't leave a tip. I made a point to write on the top of my bill "This food was not good!" I expected more! This place has been a Ventura staple for quite some time, but like most establishments that cut corners, they lose customers. They need to make changes in their kitchen.
