Russell's Donuts — Restaurant in Ventura

My hunt for the perfect doughnuts continues.

The good: The consistency here is solid! They really put in the work to ensure they're doughnuts are evenly cooked, have a perfect center line and aren't over glazed. These aren't sugar bombs -- which is great, super sweet never works for me.

Honestly, these reminded me a little bit of Mister Donut in Japan.

Also of special note: they don't double glaze. If you, say, get a maple bar (a must for me at every doughnut shop), it's only glazed in maple. It's not first glazed in standard glaze, then maple.

The bad: When I went, the oil was old. :( Yeah, so, yeah. There's just no way hiding that fact when you're eating a plain glazed doughnut. The quality of the dough was good, the glaze was solid, but there was a distinct, slightly funky quality to the smell of them which was from the oil.

I can promise you that if that oil was fresh, these guys would be bordering on five stars for me. As it is, I just can't overlook that fact.

They're on my list of places to revisit -- and when I do, if they have fresh oil, I might just have to update this review. Until then, the best I can say is great effort, but not...

The donuts are very good and cheap but I have some things three stars because as she’s running my card I grabbed the box and pulled it toward me and it seemed like she kind of freaked out. I know it’s the avenue but I’m not coming to steal a dozen donuts in my fancy ass car parked out front. 😆 That’s the only thing I’d say is because I look a certain way tattoos and bright red hair that I was judged a bit it seems.
