One of the first things that my family does when we move into a new area is to find the local Chinese takeout place. You've got to have the restaurant that you call in a pinch and know that you're going to get a lot of food for a pretty reasonable price.
We're on the hunt for the best takeout restaurant in Vienna and Peking Express was our first stop in our journey.
Overall, the service is the best that I've ever had at any takeout place...ever. The location is convenient but probably not somewhere that you'd go to eat. The food is decent, but probably nothing to write home about. The price is equitable to other takeout places in the area.
Let me break down the highlights a bit:
As I said, I really enjoyed the service at Peking Express. The guy running the store when I went was very kind, thoughtful and easy to work with. More than that, he had a few regulars in the store who he knew by name and was chatting with. That was cool to me and a good reminder that unlike P.F. Changs, this place truly is local and a part of the community.
The food was decent. You come to expect a certain level of quality when it comes to takeout food and Peking Express definitely doesn't surprise. They offer standard Chinese fair and it tastes basically like the food you'd get at most other takeout places. For that reason, it doesn't really stand out to me. I wasn't repulsed, certainly, but I wasn't blown away either. It was just fine.
Price is a tough one for me because I'm notoriously frugal when it comes to spending. You typically expect takeout places to be on the cheaper end, but I was pretty surprised when I discovered that each meal costed over $11. I was so surprised that I started looking at other places to see if that was comparable or over-priced and, I admit, most other takeout places charge about the same (give or take a few cents). Maybe Chinese is just a little more expensive these days. All that said, you do get a decent amount of food for that price. We had leftovers which is, I believe, a must for any takeout place.
For me, the combination of price and food ranks this as about average for me in the takeout world. We'd come back here in a pinch, but we'll probably be on the lookout for some additional options in the area to see if we can find a...
Read moreLet me start by saying this is really unfortunate that I have to write this because the food here is exceptional, but poor customer service skills will kill any business and this is done in a effort to help the owner become better with his customer service. Today I order like I normally do the seasme chicken (white meat) and fried rice and I wanted to try the crab ragoons most places make them a lil sweet which i have become familar to, however the recipe here was a little less sweet and more buttery which I didn't care for. I live literally 6 min from the restaraunt so I call to simply ask if they didn't mind could I switch out for chicken wings which is the same price (i did this within 4 min of them dropping off by the way). The person that answers the phone becomes very offended and started to cut me off and became very disrespectful to the point where I asked may I speak to the manager I was suprised to find out that this was the manager and the owner as he stated. I went further to explain to him that I order here all the time, I always tip my driver, and I speak highly of this place I didn't call to demand anything rather just to see my options because i would have hated to be left with something I didn't like after paying for it. He cuts me off again and tells me he has been open for 20 years and this has never happen to him etc...as I'm trying to explain to him i'm not upset I'm simply giving you the opportunity as an owner to show your customer service and take care of your customers within reason. He cuts me off again. I asked why are you getting so upset to which he responds I'm just really busy mam I'll send the driver with the chicken wings. He suggested that I should know or ask how everything taste before I order however we all know you won't know until you try it. My advice be more polite things happen, but be mindful of how you handle your customers because situations like this will create a bad name for you. Hopefully the owner will work on this because like i said the...
Read moreThis restaurant has been here forever so we decided to try it for takeout one night. One of the combos ordered had the wrong main dish. The hot sour soup..I've never seen it that light in color and lacking in substance in the soup. The spring roll that came with the combo was not only not crispy, but cold - had been sitting there clearly. Last but not least, the "fried chicken dumplings" are literally the Ling Ling dumplings Costco sells. Don't get me wrong, we like those and have a couple bags in our freezer, but have never seen a restaurant try to sell them and pass them off as their own. Even the dumpling sauce was the Ling Ling sauce watered down. Definitely will...
