I ordered a Carolina pork sandwich and what is called the Hot Mess with brisket hoping to have that for dinner. Service was prompt, food was hot and looked appealing. I hesitated to leave a review as so many people have left a high rating but I just did not consider this meeting or exceeding my expectations--it was difficult for me to put an objective reason why. For what it's worth, I always request sauce on the side. Good meat should stand on its own. So what about the meat? The brisket was juicy moist but salty. The pork was juicy moist. Flavor? Pork had enough salt, Brisket had too much. Not much else I can say I wouldn't say, smoky, crisp edges, spiced, some char--no. Adding the sauces--I just opted to skip this for both selections. The beans, macaroni, coleslaw--they were okay, but nothing was a stand out. The salty brisket also didn't increase the overall appeal of any of the sides in the Hot Mess. There was not really much else I would describe as remarkable in this meal. I was flummoxed if this was just a preference thing or if this really wasn't what a reasonable person might expect. I want to be fair. I've now read in a review reply from the restaurant they use cherrywood for smoking which just isn't as strong as hickory or oak wood. I definitely have a preference for hickory for pork and had good results with oak and hickory on brisket. I'm pretty much concluding this and the lack of burnt-end caramelized smokiness that is much more in your face in other places is what I missed in this meal. I'm willing to chalk it up to that and leave a middle of the road review because it seems plenty of people do enjoy it. There are still only a very small number of places in Columbus I would go for BBQ. Unfortunately didn't expand my territory on this...
Read moreThis review is long overdue! Smokeout BBQ is AMAZING! Not only was the food great, but Derek was awesome to work with. I hired them to cater my wedding in October of 2018, and I STILL get compliments on the food. Even the wedding DJ made it a point to tell me that it was some of the best food he has ever had at a wedding (and I can imagine he’s been to a few). The quality of food and service you get for the price cannot be beat.
I had really just been searching around and going off of other reviews to find some good barbecue food for a reasonable price as I had not had Smokeout BBQ before. I stumbled upon them, contacted Derek, and he then let me stop by the food truck one day and take samples home. After that I was sold because everything was delicious! I later met with him to discuss what exactly we wanted food wise for the wedding and he gave me recommendations for quantities and what usually went faster than others. That was extremely helpful because I had no idea where to start and wanted to be as cost effective as possible, but to still have options for my guests.
Then it was wedding day all of a sudden and it started off very rainy and wasn’t projected to change at all. Derek made it a point to contact me early on and see if there was anything he needed to do differently due to the rain. We had planned for inside, so nothing needed to be changed, but I always appreciated that he was on top of it. It was set up simply and beautifully by the time I got there and I cannot thank them enough! I recommend them to anyone else interested in barbecue for their wedding, and to anyone just looking for...
Read moreFrom the moment I opened the box, I could not stop eating long enough to take a photo. If you don't know me, I photograph it all. I think that is enough to say why 5 stars were given. The staff and owner were super friendly and helpful to everyone in line. Prepared food, compiled into a box in rapid form keeps that food truck line of customers moving fast.
I am super excited to see a calendar of dates that SOBBQ will be bringing their food truck by once a month. I already know I'm trying the brisket next time. This meal was a partitioned styrofoam box with generous weight for $10. A substantial value. I had the pulled pork sandwich, mac n cheese, and slaw, with an included drink. The pork is estimated at better than 7oz, spilling out of the bun. *Pro Tip- ask for the bun on the side to prevent sogginess.
The Mac n Cheese was made with smooth creamy cheese and small shells. I wish it had more seasoning, but the flavor is neutral for the masses. It’s hard to complain about pockets of pasta that hold extra crevices of cheese. I remember the slaw as being coarse chop carrots and cabbage with mildly sweet, creamy dressing.
Let’s be honest. If you’re going to SOBBQ, you’re there for the carnivorous factor. Nice bark, with great smoke ring. Very moist and not fatty. That low & slow procedure breaks down that fatty tissue to keep everything tender.
The sauces- I have to be neutral on these. I squirted the hot bbq on my meat and started devouring. The flavor was good, but I should have got it on the side to taste it on their own. Next month... brisket, bun on side, sauce on side, baked beans, green...
