We visited Virginia Beach and stayed in the Marriott Virginia Beach Hotel, principly to dine in the excellent restaurants in and nearby the hotel. With 34 years living and working Asia-wide, we have dined in many excellent restaurants in the better hotels spread around the Asia region. And those restaurants are generally a level above their US counterparts for varied reasons. But there are several stellar restaurants in Virginia Beach we travel down monthly to enjoy. On the fourth night of our visit to Virginia Beach, we decided we really wanted "regular" food and hopefully from a Pub and identified yet another stellar restaurant.. And that was the "HUNT ROOM" in the basement area of the Cavalier Hotel, and a historical Pub at that. The Cavalier Hotel is behind the Marriott Virginia Beach Hotel. What a wonderful surprise! While it was a Pub and did have some great Pub style dishes, the menu items were more than Pub. The dishes were prepared at a higher level of "delicious" than what you would expect from a Pub and in the range of excellent by any restaurant's standards. They were superb! And the service was excellent as well! Our waiter, MR. BILLY MATTHEWS, was a professional, focused, efficient and intuitive! He just seemed to know when to approach a table, without being intrusive. He also knew their menu well, to include the tastes and pairing with the varied wines. We noted his focus on not just our table, the the others he was handling at the same time. He is a great Ambassador for The Hunt Room and the Cavalier Hotel over all! But an added surprise with the daily Happy Hour of this Pub. The beer and wine were steeply discounted and not just American beer and house wine, but about any beer and wine that they normally served either by the bottle or or glass. I think they charged $5 for a glass of wine, even for those that they normally charged $12 and $13 a glass. The best Happy Hour I ever remember! What a great way to slip into a nice dinner, after two or three glasses...

Liked my experience at The Hunt Room. I wouldn't say it is a place I would go to every weekend, but it was a nice place to try. The entrées were on the higher end as price goes. The appetizers were definitely more of a better deal. We got the duck fat poutine and the portion size was prefect for sharing. The duck fat made a dish heavier, but just the perfect about to were yoy want to keep eating. The fries were just a bit salty this evening, but perfectly crisp on the outside with a soft inside. We also got the meat and cheese board. Included was blue cheese, goat cheese, dried cranberries, pecans, 3 different dried meats and pita bread. The blue cheese was more mild and the goat cheese was very delicious, would say the platter needed more pita or bread to have a better ratio of cheese/meat to bread. The Cornish gamehen meal itself was good, yet wasn't very unique in flavor. Would compare it to a small herd roasted chicken, with mashed potatoes and mixed squash. While it was good, it was not a dish that would keep me comming back for more as it needed a bit more boost in flavor and left a little something to be desired. The chicken fried NY steak was seasoned nicely and cooked very well while being fried. The crust on the outside was very crisp while the texture of the steak was soft making for a great texture variation. For desserts we tried the cheesecake and the pineapple upside-down cake with mango sorbet. The cheesecake has a very sweet aftertaste, with a mild cheese flavor. The pineapple cake itself had a great fluffy texture on the inside with nice crust on the outside, while the tartness of the mango sorbet blended nicely with the sweetness of the cake syrup. Overall the drinks were the best. This would be a great place to come for drinks and appetizers and the...

This place its nice but wait staff and Hostess are not what you pay for. I use to bring all my clients and family when they visit here from out of town, but with last several times, the experiences i got its not worth it anymore. Just this past Saturday around 11-11:10pm we left upstairs so continue downstars, a lady with black shirt and two pony tails was by the door i will call her " Hostess 1", she said she has to do something she will right back "wait I will be back and sit you" we are waiting, then behind us walked another 2-3 parties, while talking to my friend Now hostess 2 started sitting all people behind us. Then, we asked " hey we were here first and we were told to wait, why are we not being seated first, she said "well i saw them first" while we were standing right in front of her. I mean is that suppose to mean? She said I have to sit them and then I will sit you, " I said i thought i was first some first serve? My BF said to her that this was not fair along those lines, She said, "if you going to be mean to me and my staff you have to leave now, I dont want your business"

Oh Hostess 1 never came back or apology NONE she was gone just walking by us but like we were ghosts.

So we cant confront you or ask why we are being skipped, and just because you are busy you can be rude.

This was not first time that i had unpleasant experience here, it takes forever to get an order going; however Saturday was another level behavior. Its funny because all my friends that i ran into since and talked about what had happened to us, said same thing, this place its only popular because of nice ambiance, staff sucks. They know they are busy and they could care less how they talk to you or when they get to you.

And here we were talking about having a wedding here just...

I actually had high hopes for this place. I absolutely love going to restaurants and seeing what their cocktail scene is like and I’ve some thoughts. What I will say is their menu is innovative, and I appreciate the illustrations and creative craft cocktails. Unfortunately that’s kind of where it stops. Execution was sub par and the flavors were unbalanced, that and the old limes used as a garnish was quite off putting. They were covered in brown spots and the garnish tray was fully exposed at the end of the bar so fruit flies gathered. The food was fine. Kind of a southern ish cuisine and the flavors were okay. Unfortunately the food lacked creativity and was awfully similar to your typical Applebees or other franchise restaurant. Did enjoy the Brussels. We had the special steak with crab cakes. I also was disappointed in how bland the crab cake was considering we are literally a block from the beach… I’m concerned it may be frozen which was even more disappointing considering the cost of the meal itself. Anyways, I’ll be back to try again and I hope to see some improvements. The atmosphere was my favorite part of the meal, as it felt like a timepiece tavern. The Television felt extremely out of place, and it took me out of the vibe entirely. It gives off sports bar vibes and truly should be reconsidered. Being in the basement of the Cavalier I imagined a large painting of the fireplace instead of a LED screen playing the football game. Would have provided more pictures but I was on my honeymoon and didn’t want to be on my phone

Last week, we had dinner at the Hunt Room located on the lower level of the Cavalier Hotel. Very interesting feel that while I enjoyed, my wife did not. It's basically an upscale pub feel as you can see from the pics. All tastefully appointed and clean. The feed was great, however, we made the mistake of having a late lunch and could not fully appreciate the food nor finish our meals. Also, we ordered the Brussel Sprout appetizer and it was so good, but filled us up. I had the Fried Shrimp, which was supposed to have 8 but only 7 were on the plate, which was OK as I said, I was struggling to finish. They were very BIG and fried perfectly. The fries were plentiful and tasty. My wife had the Lobster Mac and Cheese which had generous amounts of lobster and the very cheesy and thick. Both were very good dinners and had fair prices. I did note that when the waiter took our order, and I did not order a cocktail at that time, I did notice a look on his face (maybe it was me?) as he probably figured a smaller non-alcohol bill means a smaller tip. Meanwhile, I was just undecided as their drink menu is not only extensive but very interesting. I ordered a Smoked Old Fashion after he brought out my wife's drink and my seltzer. His mannerisms changed after I ordered my cocktail. lol. Other than that, he was great. Bottom line, is that if you have a good hearty appetite and enjoy a good cocktail, this is definitely the place to come for dinner. Enjoy!
