UPDATE REVIEW 7-4-2025 The review that is in detail below was my first impressions of the hotel upon arriving early on the afternoon July 3rd. I spoke extensively with the general manager Marvin Matias today July 4th and I feel very confident that he plans on turning this hotel around for the better heading in an upward direction. He has already started improvements at this hotel by having a nice 4th of July cookout at the poolside and live music that started around 4:00 which was a nice change from years past. You also mentioned room renovations starting this fall in the older tower. He has also already addressed the problem with the fire exit stairwell in the older building too.
Well I have to say that I have been coming to this hotel for 13 straight years for 3 to 4 nights over the July 4th holiday and things seem to be in a state of transition and I hope it is for the better. We arrived early about 12:30 put our name in at the front desk just to let them know hey we are here give us a call when the room is ready and they said that they would... I think for the first time ever there was no acknowledgment of myself being an IHG member unfortunately and overall the staff at the front desk that greeted us or not friendly at all... Also unfortunately 4:00 came and went which is their posted check-in time with no phone call to say the room was ready.... Since we were by the poolside we walked inside asked about the room and magically it was ready even though they never bothered to call us to tell us it was ready 🤔.... Regardless we took our room keys and went up to our alleged pool view room with ocean view.... It was not.... The view was of the circle parking lot that people come in to drop off our bags no ocean and a glimpse of the pool through the glass doors of the walkway so needless to say this was not what we paid for which by the way is $400 a night during this time of year.... Thus we return to the front desk to discuss our options... Our first attempt to go down to the front desk was to use the stairwell which was two doors down from our original room... We attempted to open the door which was a marked fire exit out of the first floor exit of the building and you could only open the door a quarter of the way because it was blocked by who knows what out in the alley area which I'm sure the fire department would love to know that Holiday inn is blocking fire exits a disaster waiting to happen and we bought the same issue to their attention because it has happened before several years ago and apparently nobody cares to correct it... Regardless here is where some of the good things start to happen finally.... At the front desk the gentleman that helped us was named Manny and with no questions asked he took our original room keys and assigned us the correct room which is a pool view and ocean view room which was exactly what we thought we were getting originally so we are very satisfied with that.... I also need to give a shout out to the valet that was working on July 3rd because he complimented me on being the only person at this hotel who knew how to park their vehicle correctly unload it and then move my vehicle to the garage across the street as you're supposed to do not abandon it and the half circle parking lot as four other people chose to do. If nothing else a pleasant greeting a good morning a good afternoon and also in acknowledgment of being an IHG member as every other Holiday Inn hotel makes a point to do that I have ever stayed at would have been nice instead of just taking my $1,600 with a grumpy look on their face. Kindness and courtesy can go a long way when greeting guests especially when you have to resolve problems with your guests that may arise. Again I will make a point to acknowledge two people that were very friendly and helpful and that was Manny at the front desk and the gentleman handling the valet parking on July the 3rd specifically. I do plan on copying and pasting this review straight to the IHG website as well...
Read moreIf you’re looking for a luxury oceanfront resort getaway for you and your partner, this is not it. So many negative reviews from people who had entirely unrealistic expectations.
But if you’re a family with children of various ages looking for something that has all bases covered, and your kids can be kids while still feeling like you landed in an all-inclusive somewhere - this is definitely the hotel for you.
Will confirm that yes, the rooms are worn and dated. The windows are etched from years of salty ocean air and the HVAC in the hallways is hit or miss. Sometimes the patio doors can be rough sliding but if one chooses to get hung up on these silly issues, they’ve missed the point of vacation.
To their credit, the rooms are spacious and the beds are very comfy and clean. Plenty of large; fluffy towels in the bathroom and the water pressure in all three of our rooms was delightful for getting sand out of your hair. Parking fees are extremely reasonable at $10/day compared to other hotels. The area feels safe, the hotel feels safe and inviting and fun.
The proximity to literally everything is wonderful. It’s far enough up the boardwalk that it’s not crazy busy or overwhelming, but close enough that there are plenty of off-site amenities nearby but you really do not need to leave the hotel at all.
With the beach and three beautifully kept pools, you can get as much or as little sun as you want. The “fun” pool with the slides is shady in the morning and most of the day to keep your littles out of the sun, while the ocean side pool has both sun and shade with plenty of chairs and umbrellas for those wanting a pool with a view.
The beach was exceptional. Not crowded at all; groomed every morning and absolutely wonderful.
There are three restaurants on site and while we missed the Italian place, the Square Whale is delicious and very reasonably priced. The breakfast buffet is plentiful, tasty and worth every penny.
There is a movie theater for down days and the hotel posts their scheduled films every morning so you can plan around it.
Their kids play camp is large, well stocked and wonderful. Our kids were too old to benefit but I wish we’d visited when they were younger because it would’ve been such a fun spot.
There is also a 7-11 right across the street and those folks keep it clean and well stocked for anything you forgot that isn’t available at the hotel.
My solo complaint happened when we had nearly $1000 in unauthorized payments to our credit card. We had been checked in by a young man, and we made several trips to the front desk over two days and he became more and more condescending and belligerent, claiming he had no idea what was wrong and to take it up with IHG or our bank. His demeanor was so shocking that other guests at the counter and in the lobby intervened. This young man refused to tell us when a supervisor or manager would be available. We contacted IHG who agreed they could see the transactions but told us it had to be corrected by the hotel. IHG sent the transactions to management with a request for assistance - we did not hear from management at all.
However, on our third day, I had ordered something from Amazon and went to pick it up from the front desk, there was another young lady there and when I asked her about the manager, she explained he was not in that week but offered to take a look and had the problem resolved in a couple of minutes by correcting the routing issues for the payments. She was very helpful and competent and explained when we were checked in, whomever did so (the belligerent young man) had incorrectly routed payments.
So this is the only reason I am giving this hotel 4 stars because one mistake caused an immense amount of distress, tied up nearly $1000 on our credit card and refused to even attempt to resolve or escalate it to someone who could help; and then had the audacity to undermine, demean and imply we were lying about...
Read moreMy husband had a business event to attend at the Hilton, but there were no rooms left there that suited our needs, so we booked this room at the Holiday Inn North Beach. |Out of 5 stars: ||Rooms=3⭐ It's time for a remodel. Sliding glass doors get stuck and are foggy. Ceiling paint was falling down. Toilet seat was broken. Couch and chair arms were stained brown. We had a suite with small kitchenette, but it wasn't very sweet. |The bed linens and towels were very clean and plentiful. |Elevators are tiny and slow. We took the stairs up and down 4 flights with a 4 and 6 year olds most of the time. |Rooms did have Disney Channel (not Disney+). ||Location= 5⭐ Fantastic quiet north end beach with spectacular dolphin watching! Very clean beach and chairs for rent nearby. Trolley and a 7-Eleven are just outside. The Green Cat and Dunkin Donuts are walkable in under 5 mins. The boardwalk area and Neptune statue are walkable. ||(I should maybe deduct points for proximity to Oceana, but I guess I knew what I was in for coming to VA Beach. I used to live here. The Jet noise is worse than it used to be. They flew directly overhead every 15 minutes. The sound is jarring.)||Poolside Food & Drink Service=5⭐||Maintenance=5⭐||Kids Kamp=5⭐ This is 100% thanks to Izzy! She made everything fun and our kids wanted to spend all day with her. ||Movie Theater=5 ⭐||Pools=4⭐they were cold and the hot tub was broken. I saw 2 roaches while here for 3 days and one was in the indoor lazy river. The kids loved the lazy river, but it was not equipped with floats of any kind. It had the only hot tub at the hotel and it was out of order for our entire stay. 😭 None of the pools are heated. I would expect the indoor pool to be heated. ||Restaurants: "Squared Whale" 4.5 great food, service and dessert, but there were no metal spoons and that's just cheap and bad for the environment. The view is spectacular! ||"The Greenery Cafe"=2⭐|There is no Continental breakfast at this hotel. Instead, they charge $20 for a breakfast bar that is so-so. If you want an omelette, it costs another $4. Service was overstaffed for what it was. Maybe they were training new hires for the summer, but there were about 5 people standing around at a buffet and that was awkward. I could barely move past them with my plates and children and their plates. Buffets are more work than they are worth for people with small kids. It would have been nice to be offered help, especially for the price. ||"Isle of Capri"= did not attend because of our experience at The Greenery. (we did enjoy the Melting Pot for fondue, which is on Laskin Rd.)||"The Green Cat"=5 ⭐We enjoyed super healthy smoothies and gf cookies and chocolate protein balls across the street at the Green Cat. ||The staff is 5⭐!|They are doing what they can to make this place great and they are actually the saving grace. They should be rewarded for this, especially Izzy, who does a fantastic job with the Kids Kamp. |However, it's obvious that this hotel is no longer one of the best places to stay and needs building and pool updates. Since 2006, I've stayed here in the off-season twice and it was prior to having children, and it was about the same experience with the rooms and restaurants. I think it's time for some remodeling and serious repairs for this Holiday Inn, which has the best location at the North End of...
