Shaking Crab — Restaurant in Virginia Beach

Horrific customer service!! This was the worst dining experience I have ever encountered in my entire life. A group of customers is forever lost to Shaking Crab over corn and potatoes!!!! If I could I would not give this restaurant any stars. If zero was an option, that's the score I would give.

Earlier in the month my family and I were in Virginia for the Home Going of a beloved son, nephew, cousin, and the list of loved ones goes on. The day before the funeral service, we decided to try Shaking Crab for the first time as we live in San Antonio, Texas and Shaking Crab is not an establishment available to us.

My aunt ordered three dozen crabs to share between herself and my uncle. When the food was delivered there were two potatoes in the bag and one piece of corn. My aunt asked our waitress, could we get another piece of corn? There are two potatoes here, but there's only one piece of corn. When my aunt originally placed the order she made it clear to our server that the meal was being shared between two people.

If you’ve ever been to Shaking Crab, and for those of you who have not been. This restaurant is not the cheapest. Most of us when we pay more, hope we’ll receive a higher caliber of service.

My aunt proceeded to ask our server could she bring them another piece of corn as she thought it was accidentally left out of the order. The waitress proceeded to tell us, that only one piece of corn came in an order of three dozen crabs????

My aunt said I informed you this the meal was being shared, should I have ordered this meal a different way so each person could have had their own corn?

Our waitress proceeded to tell us that she’d be happy to give my aunt another corn in exchange for one of the potatoes. Yes, you heard correctly!! We thought oh she must be new, this can't be proper protocol. We asked for the manger and the manager stated, that our server was correct. They needed a potato in exchange for the corn.

My aunt reached into her bag and handed over the potato for the corn.

Please know, we could have paid for another piece of corn. What would have been another $2 or $5’s on top of the $250 plus that was already being spent? The issue at hand, is the horrific customer service displayed by both the management and wait staff at this establishment.

Neither the waitress nor manager was aware that they were waiting on a grieving family, nonetheless, they were!!!!

Never in all of my dining experiences have I been asked to dig in my food and return something as minuscule as a potato in exchange for a piece of corn. Especially since that potato was ultimately thrown away as it cannot be served to another consumer. Unless that's the type of establishment this place is, that they would reserve food that was previously on another customers plate. That disturbing thought alone is another reason we will never patronage this establishment again.

An excellent customer service experience would not have diminished the heartache and anguish of a grieving family. Yet, would not have left the restaurant feeling like one less cringe-worthy encounter was being added to an already overflowing list.

My aunt still tipped our waitress even with the horrible taste the services rendered left in all our minds. The tip was not the full amount our waitress would have received, but my aunt said. She would still be a blessing to the the young lady even though she did not display the same kindness in turn!!

As I really wish to report higher, I simply will not. The food is definitely amazing, however, it is a very very crowded environment and almost immediately thrown back the moment you walk in leading to questioning whether to stay or not. The wait time wouldn't be so bad if there was extended space to try and wait somewhat comfortably but there isn't. They provide maybe 10 to 12 chairs along a wall and just waiting to sit becomes more of a focus than the excitement of why your there to begin with. Rarely is the wait time less than 40min unless your standing at the door before they open (yes, it's that serious) but definitely plan to be crammed and possibly standing shoulder to shoulder to wait your turn for a hour or longer [on average]. What lastly needs to be known is the service is poor, there is a lack of enthusiasm, communication, and accountability among the staff. As I am speaking from my own experience, once seated, we received popcorn and later the bucket with just a couple utensils. The waiter was very impatient and presented as being bothered or "over it" when assistance was needed to help first time customers. Once our orders were taken, the waiter never returned and failed to communicate that there would be a switch with another waiter. Once receiving our orders, we are then approached by a different person who asked what we made need. We had to asked for condiments, napkins, plates [a third different person]. Moving forward to whem the bill was already given, only then is it noticed that we hadn't received gloves, the plastic bib to place on you. When the discussing the nature of confusion and lack of appropriate service with the second waitress, she was unable to valid reasons for the lack of service other than apologizing that we weren't informed of the change in waiters. The manager was requested and pretty much had nothing to say other than apologizing. Often times an accommodation is made in similar or worse situations that may occur in restaurants, and although he made no suggestion to compensate, there was no expectation to receive anything. At that point, it was the vibe and disappointment of service received by a placed that is widely spoken about. Thankfully, we still enjoyed ourselves regardless but never will I be a paying customer, support the business, nor speaking highly. I definitely will not recommend supporting a business that could potentially fall short on another paying customers experience. There are similar locations where the food is just as good if not better but more organized, friendly, comfortable, reliable, and worth supporting.
