When I saw a small sign for Great Falls Creamery around Scotts Run, I was pretty excited to try it! The creamery is really hard to find, after our GPS told us we arrived, it took us 10 minutes to find it as we drove around in circles. There are a few shopping centers with tons of shops and the Creamery is quietly tucked away.
Although I was really impressed by the variety of 20+ flavors, they were a bit bland. To my disappointment, I wasn't a fan of the Amaretto Biscotti flavor, it tasted like plain vanilla ice cream. Where was the Biscotti? I could hardly taste the Amaretto.
I love sprinkles and was looking forward to my ice cream decked out with short rainbow jimmies. Instead, I got these tiny balls (apparently called "nonpareils sprinkles"). I really hate these. They have a crunchy hard taste unlike the soft sugary sprinkles that I always enjoy. I wish the round nonpareils sprinkles were specified as a topping on the menu instead of rainbow sprinkles, creating confusion.
I ended up throwing away my ice cream and eating my husband's. We enjoyed the Cafe Au Lait Chip, it was coffee ice cream with chocolate chips. I wish I went with that flavor or the S'mores with fluffy marshmallow.
I wouldn't mind coming back if I'm in the area. Sorry to say, I don't think it's worth the 20 min drive from McLean. I prefer Toby's Homemade Ice Cream near East...
Read moreAfter seeing the Great Falls Creamery listed on Northern Virginia's Weekly Yelp roundup, I decided to go try it after a nice, long hike at nearby Great Falls National Park. It's a short drive away to this little Great Falls Village Center. A local, family-owned business, Great Falls Creamery offers homemade ice cream made from a dairy farm with grass-fed cows.
The shop serves up soft serve, hard scoops, sundaes, milkshakes, and root beer floats. They also sell milk from Trickling Springs Creamery, yogurt from Pequea Valley Farm, as well as fresh breads, pies, pastries, and cookies. Some of the ice cream flavors include black raspberry (my personal favorite), strawberry, cinnamon, mint Oreo, Rocky Road, coconut chocolate crunch, café au lait, and vanilla chip. It's a good mix of traditional and unique flavors so that everyone can find their OTP.
The black raspberry is fantastic! Really delicious, especially in either a sugar or waffle cone. The flavor was perfectly well-balanced, and I would highly recommend trying it. When I went, they were only serving hard scoops but soft serve lovers, have no fear! In this gloriously hot spring weather, the hard scoop doesn't last too long. They're also very generous with their scoops, so you definitely get the bang for your buck. There's a quaint courtyard in the back where you can walk around and...
Read moreWhy a 1 star rating? Story time! After getting our ice cream, we decided to eat inside. I guess the manager who was sitting on her computer in the room forgot there were any customers there while she had a conversation with a friend. So basically, they were talking about the tip function at the register and how the tip percentages where listed high to low.. left to right. So basically, they are scamming customers on the tip. Everyone is so used to seeing, say 15% then 18% then 20% buttons. Not here. The manager admitted that the owner purposely flipped the order to 22% (lol at an ice cream shop? 22%?) to be the first option. Incredibly shady for extremely overpriced ice cream to begin with. The manager then even laughed about it. It was pretty mind boggling they had this conversation out loud, in the middle of the store.
So yeah, this store attempts to scam you for a higher tip percentage. Never...
