To preface this review -- the times I have visited 51st state have all wildly differed -- and as such I have averaged out my score to show accordingly.
DO -- sit at the bar. Why? Because you are assured quick service and the bartenders are friendly.
DO NOT -- sit on the deck unless you really dont want to be serviced after you order. Every time I have gone and sat on the deck ...service has been slow bordering on negligent. I do not blame it on the staff but more so lack of staff. Essentially when I was sitting out on the deck it was because it was a beautiful day and about 30 other people were also out there -- with only 1 waitress assisting.
DO -- go here if you like New York Sports Teams
DO NOT -- if you hate New York Sports Teams
MEH -- Order the wings -- they used to have super cheap wings here but those days have passed... wings are still relatively inexpensive but honestly they used to be the draw for me -- not so much anymore.
In general, 51st state is a divey sports bar -- has some decent amenities to watch your favorite (NY) Sports teams and has some acceptable...
Read moreWas visiting DC and wanted to watch the Jets-Giants preseason game. Called to ask if the game would be on and was told Yes. Got there, asked them to put on pre-game show and waiter said "not yet" because HE was watching a baseball game. Ordered food, beer and again asked for game close to start time. Waiter again mentioned he was watching the baseball game but his team was losing, so he would change it. But instead, we were given remote to find it ourselves because waiter was "too busy." NO GAME. After 10-15 minutes past kick-off, the manager came out and said sorry but they didn't buy the pre-season package. NO offer of a comp beer, water ANYTHING to say sorry even after I told the waiter I had called in advance, it cost $16 in cab fare to get there (it was another $16 back) and had spent about an $80 bill for food/drinks for the 4 of us. I got a really weak, insincere "sorry" from the waiter. Probably a NE fan. And by the way, the...
Read moreI am basing this review on a couple of visits. My first visit was brief - went for some beers with coworkers and it was just the average bar. My second visit was after happy hour at A Bar (next door) so my friends and I were feeling good from that experience. I honestly believe that those previous happy hour drinks influenced this experience. We left thinking "Oh wow, this is awesome!! Everything is cheap and tastes great!" So of course, that means - go back for a third visit!!! Right??? Wrong! Going back sober really changed everything. From our drinks being wrong, to terrible food and more importantly below mediocre service (Server: Kelly had a serious attitude and was very aggressive and combative), I know that we won't be back. Save your...
