i have been vegan for nine years and this place by far is my favorite restaurant (vegan or not) ever. i live a couple hours south in va so whenever I’m in dc i make sure to stop by. the food is AMAZING.
i used to order the crispy chicken wrap and it was amazing. it has these thick meaty fried chicken tenders with veggie mix and hipcity sauce that pools at the bottom of the wrap and it is SO!!!! GOOD!!!! after a while i decided to switch to the philly cheesesteak and what an amazing choice that was. whew. there’s a reason this is the most popular menu item. they toast the bread with butter and put the most amazing vegan steak i’ve ever had on it with grilled mushrooms, onions, and the oiliest fattiest damn yummiest cheese i’ve ever had. all with decadent and perfectly sweet marinara sauce. UNMATCHED!!!
i also want to note that this location in particular never misses. once i went to another location and never again… but this one on 7th st makes everything perfectly every. single. time. literally never had a bad meal from here out of the dozens of times i’ve eaten here.
the sweet potato fries are also amazing, since they started offering regular fries i think not as many people opt for the sweet potato fries but they used to be the only option and for good reason!!! and the only logical condiment to eat with these amazing, crunchy, hot, sweet yet savory, sweet potato fries is the hipcity sauce. the hipcity sauce is a carbon copy of the chick fil a sauce to the last minute detail.. dare i say it might even be better?? it’s perfectly tangy yet also sweet and has a kick from the pepper, it’s also incredibly amazingly creamy. holy crap i can’t get enough of it.
the next amazing thing is their MILKSHAKES!!!! hands down the best vegan milkshakes i’ve ever had. i almost always get the chocolate milkshake and comparing it to shake shack it’s of the highest quality. shake shack’s vegan chocolate milkshake is very evidently flavored with hersheys chocolate syrup which is just straight up cheap and disappointing. hipcityveg on the other hand? it has a very rich, unique, high quality creamy chocolate flavor like nothing you’ve tried before. it’s also the perfect consistency,, it’s never too thick or thin!!! merry mint is also def their best seasonal milkshake btw, maybe even better than the chocolate. so good.
the last thing i’d like to comment on is their pastries. i know they don’t make them themselves but i’m grateful for them for choosing such amazing and high quality bakeries, id expect nothing less from hipcityveg. the brownies are SUPER chocolaty and decadent and fluffy and soft. the cookies are extremely buttery and rich with nice big chunks of chocolate. it just melts in ur mouth fr.
i also want to say for anywhere eating here for the first time,, i highly advise u to branch out from the chicken nuggets or sandwiches. don’t get me wrong, they’re good, but they don’t even begin to compare to other menu items (everyone has to try the philly cheesesteak at least once. ur life will be changed forever.) so yeah, don’t be afraid to order something out of the ordinary,, you will not regret it !!!!!
if hipcityveg has a million fans i am one of them. if hipcityveg has 10 fans i am one of them. if hipcityveg has 1 fan it is me. if hipcityveg has 0 fans i am dead. i adore hipcityveg until my last breath. GO GET SOME GRUB THERE...
Read more5 stars. WONDERFUL food! Defs recomended!
So, I've only ever gotten through Uber eats, so I can't comment on atmosphere. As for service, considering I've only ever ordered delivery I haven't had much interaction there, but I can say that if the many times I've ordered here, once they forgot my onion rings and when I called about it, they were friendly and promptly offered me an option for a refund or to pick some up next time I'm in the area (I chose refund and the man encouraged me to call back if I had any more concerns in the future).
But mostly I wanted to say, the food is friggen fantastic. A bit pricey, as to be expected for healthy, fresh, vegan cuasine, but if you have it, your money will not be waisted here. The first time I ate here, I got the cheese steak and it was so great that I had to check the website twice to make sure it was vegan and that I didn't misunderstand anything. I mean, it was so good and high quality, that I was legitimately worried that I ate meat & cheese and was so relieved and impressed that it was, indeed, vegan!
I now order here every chance I get. I look forward to going to the restaurant in person soon to check it out with my eyeballs & get a feel for atmosphere and more interaction with the staff (which has so far been really good).
Foods I've tried & my opinions: •Fantastic onion rings! •Delicious sweet potato fries (although more soft then crisp), which go great with the amazingly DELISH hipcityveg sauce (basically a sort of honey mustard). •Reg fries are pretty good... like a fresh version of McDonald's (so way better than McD) if that makes any sense. •Stk & Chz to die for (this is the item that I thought for sure was not vegan, but was). •Crispy chx ranch (I added "bacon") is very good, though can kind of tell its not real, but still really great. •Ziggy burger was SO yum! •Sweet Green Tea is so refreshing with just the right amount of sweet and a hint of another light and fresh flavor that I can't quite put my finger on. I could drink this all day long!
They have a gluten free bun option, which is really great for those who have more restrictions.
The brownie and cookie might possibly be my favorite items from here. I always get 2 of each to save for the future and they hold pretty well. I ate all 4 over about a 2 week period and they STILL tasted fresh.
At one point I tried a swirl shake with nuts and chocolate and it was ok. Not really a repeat for me, but still good. It had a kind of different taste to it that I wasn't really into but not totally against.
All in all, a wonderful spot for vegans, vegetarians, those with a lot of dietary restrictions, kosher.... or even those with a typical American diet who wants a bang'n dinner (this would be my fiancé, who turns his nose up at my "weird food" and yet devours food from hipcityveg)! I have referred this place to many people who all return to me with nothing but great things to say about their experience as well!
I wish every town had a hipcityveg! Unfortunately I live 2 hrs away, but I'll be back as soon...
Read moreExperience with Order Pickup – July 16, 2025
On the evening of July 16, I arrived at the store to pick up an online order scheduled through DoorDash. The confirmed pickup time was 8:33 PM EST, and I arrived precisely on time. Upon informing the staff member at the counter of my order and providing the pickup name, she responded that the order was “almost ready.” I sat down and waited for approximately 10 minutes with no updates.
Several customers who arrived after me were told their orders would be ready in 10 minutes, and they received their food ahead of mine. I followed up again, expressing my concern, and the staff member acted as though she wasn't aware of my order’s status. I noted the delay and shared that others had been served before me despite arriving later. Her response was dismissive: “You can cancel it if you don't want to wait.”
At this point, my food and drink were on the counter, but the items were not labeled, stapled, or properly packed. During this time, the staff member repeatedly referenced that the store’s internet was down and suggested that other customers cancel their mobile orders and order in-store instead. She appeared to be actively prioritizing other conversations and orders, speaking in multiple languages—including Spanish and another non-English, non-Spanish language—with kitchen staff and over the phone, all while continuing to delay my pickup. She occasionally switched back to English, saying things like “please give me a marker,” but it seemed clear her attention was elsewhere.
After approximately 19 minutes of waiting—despite the store not being busy—I finally received my order. Throughout the experience, I remained calm and respectful. The lack of professionalism, transparency, and care was disappointing.
This experience raises concerns about customer service standards and employee training. In a service-driven environment, such behavior reflects poorly on the business and directly impacts customer satisfaction. I am not mentioning the staff member’s name, but with the specific date and time provided, the manager should be able to identify who was working. I hope this feedback contributes to more thoughtful and customer-friendly practices...
