Absolutely delicious! This was my first time trying Nordic food, so I'm, admittedly, probably not the best judge of quality or authenticity, but I was thoroughly satisfied by my meal here. We were searching for a place to celebrate my friend's 22nd birthday, and she just happened to be craving some Norwegian food, so we decided to come to her favorite spot! From her recommendations, I decided to try the shrimp salad skagen open-face sandwich! The shrimp salad was served on multigrain toast with dill and a bit of lemon, and it was absolutely delicious. It felt light and refreshing. The ingredients were all incredibly fresh, and the simple presentation and dish allowed all of their natural flavors to shine. I also bought one of their cardamom buns with lingonberry jam and had it for breakfast the next morning, and I was incredibly satsified.

Beyond the amazing food, Mikko's overall ambiance is incredible. We ended up eating outside because of COVID times but their outdoor seating is adorable. I only stepped inside briefly to wash my hands in the restroom, but the interior decoration is also incredibly homey and sweet. The service is also impeccable -- it's speedy and thorough, and the servers are all incredibly kind....

Stopped in for dessert on a recent evening. I sat inside at the counter / bar next to the food prep area (like at a sushi bar). There is also plenty of seating outside, if you'd prefer and if weather permits.

The lingonberry bread pudding was out of this world. The servings of Norwegian Linie Aquavit "high spirits" were exceedingly well flavored, driven by caraway, with notes of star anise, vanilla, and even a bit of coriander. If "high spirits" of golden color with a subtle sweetness sound intriguing, get in here and get some Linie Aquavit!

And, for another dessert, after your first dessert, get the salty licorice ice cream (it is sooooo good) that comes topped with a salty licorice lollipop! A lollipop!

This place is crazy wonderful! So good, in fact, that I came back for breakfast the next day. I had the ham and cheese quiche, and a large cup of Illy coffee with cream. Extraordinary! The cozy, colorful and happy surroundings are made even better by the attentiveness of the friendly servers, the manager, and the host or hostess. This is a go-to favorite for the local neighbors in the DuPont Circle community. And now it is my...

Mikko is a tiny, cute Nordic restaurant that also sells sandwiches and pastries. The place is festively painted bright red and blue. Most of the menu consists of fish dishes, but there's something for everyone.

I recently returned for dinner. The food was good as before, but I tried some things that I ended up not liking as much as I expected, like cold smoked tomato soup. In retrospect, I should have just asked for the kitchen to heat it, but I only ended up eating half the bowl. I stopped eating it when I ran out of grilled cheese. Finally, the service was really poor in my opinion. This kind of makes it more realistic, it's more like Europe. I wasn't sure whether I needed to go to the counter or wait for the waiter ... who may not have actually been a waiter in the first place. I was pretty nonplussed at the time. Desserts were just pastries pulled out of the display. Finally, the chairs were REALLY uncomfortable. I've sat in worse ones, but they were pretty bad. Tight at the waist, with poorly angled backs. Anyway, I still think it's worth a visit, as long as you think of it like a real...

Even though Swedish blood runs think through my veins, I am not one for Nordic cooking, mainly because the amount of seafood they use. Mikko changed my opinion after just one visit. My Swedish friend and I grabbed lunch on a Friday at Mikko. It was a perfect sunny day and Mikko's was the ideal spot with it's patio seating and open window concept. It also is the best dressed restaurant in DC with blues and reds on brand, evoking a brighter summer. The staff are friendly from the host to chef Mikko himself. You order inside from their limited, yet excellent lunch menu. They have pastries (sweet and savory) and packages snacks from northern Europe. I ordered the Swedish hot dog with shrimp skagen (like a dill and shrimp potato salad) and it was legit and tasty! As my friend and I were dining outside, the server brought us free cinnamon roll treats and an extra serving of shrimp skagen. Wow! If you want a friendly and tasty restaurant, walk to Dupont Circle to Mikko!

During my few days in D.C. I wanted to eat some decent, normal food, instead of only fastfood. As someone who’s been getting more and more interested by Scandinavia and its culture, it seemed like the perfect place to dine. Located in a rather cute part of the city, you’ll find this small restaurant with a great choice of Scandinavian dishes and beverages. I started off with an Aalborg Akvavit aperitif, before getting to my main dessert, a chicken schnitzel. The apparent owner of the restaurant, who is Finnish herself, suggested the Date Cake as a dessert. All of it was served pretty fast, and I loved it all. Nothing too fancy, just what you would expect of it. If you’re looking for something ‘different’ after all the fastfood, make sure to check this place out.
