Rude barman (hoyt) hated people/customers - avoid.
After a government event next door at the NED, we walked in here in high spirits.
We had to run out to get our bags we'd forgotten.
When i came back in myself, i made the grave error of thinking it was a bar where customers talk, drink and have fun.
I stupidly made the mistake of asking to see a menu.
The barman got weirdly angry and said "you and your brother already came in here and stared at the menu for ages!"
When I politely chuckled and asked him what he meant, he doubled down and just got more angry. I asked for his name as he got more obnoxious and angry that I dared to ask for the menu, and he reluctantly told me, and then started swearing with exasperation and went over to complain to his mate.
It was obvious he had a bad day and wanted someone to take it out on.
Again - my error - I should not have been this rude to expect this much of Hoyt (i.e. the basics of customer service)
Neither should I have expected the charming Hoyt to understand that we are the customers who pay their (quite handsome) wages.
It was wrong of me to ruin his evening by going in with a smile on my face l, making him feel bad about his life.
Again - all my fault!
Next time I'll...
oh...
I won't be going again! and by the looks of things, no one else...

You’d miss this best-kept-secret bar if you weren’t looking out for it - tucked into another of DC’s historic but staid old concrete blocks, steps from the Treaury - but if you want a place for a quiet drink in a perfectly dimmed, spare, unhipster, warm, intimate, old-school and wonderful downtown bar that no one else knows about.. this is your place. Best service of any bar in the city. Food? No. But space, time, and atmosphere in which to quietly...
Read moreHidden among the soulless interior that continues to be DC's downtown, largely comprised of blank-faced government offices and nondescript corporate headquarters, sits this similarly unremarkable bar. I expect it's a great addition to what would otherwise be a dismal happy hour scene for business locals, but it remained staunchly bereft of both atmosphere and clientele at 8pm on a Friday night. A basic menu accompanies basic décor - this bar would fit in just about anywhere, and make no waves. DC, you can do better for...
