Saturday July 20th my wife (self proclaimed wing connoisseur) and I finally made it to Natty Oaks in West Allis.
We've always heard good things about their wings, but didn't fully believe it. Either way we had to add it to our list of finding the "best wings" in Milwaukee. Only took us 8 months to finally get here. Mind you we've been on this journey for 15+ years trying every wing we can find in Wisconsin and in our travels.
As we entered we noticed on the 21st (today) they're hosting a benefit for a fallen police officer, have to respect that, good first impressions.
Two nice outdoor patios one being dog friendly. Inside is clean, music at a good level and friendly bartenders. We were greeted promptly and attended to as expected.
We ordered 2 dozen wings (crispy). Buffalo Ranch, Mango Habanero, Thai Chili, and Bourbon Glaze with blue cheese and ranch. We debated the Horseradish Peppercorn, and decided to pass. However, we did get a sample and will be back for it, "the Wife" said she would slather it on a Prime Rib it was so good.
After a beverage or two the wings came out, prepared as we would expect, not over sauced, crispy, carrots/celery and a chunky blue cheese.
A few bites in, a look of enjoyment was on my wife's face, you know you have a top notch wing when you make her happy.
Sauces were spot on, excellent flavor and not over powering, making them well balanced.
The style of wing I would say is medium, traditional, non-breaded, non-salt injected, fresh (not frozen) fried/grilled wing.
They were cooked all the way through, maybe even grilled a little bit, could tell they added seasoning during preparation for some additional layers of flavor. Even asking for them to be crispy the chicken was juicy, and the skin had a good crisp/snap to it.
Ambience - 8.7 Staff - 9.1 Presentation - 8.4 Cost - $$ Taste/flavor - 8.5
Overall - We enjoyed our time, beverages, conversation, and wings at Natty Oaks.
My wife's scores were a little higher than mine, which to both of our surprises moved Natty Oaks into first place, moving Jonny Hammers to 2nd, Tomkens and Club Garibaldi (currently tied) to 3rd, and all the rest down another slot.
Please note, with this ranking we will be back multiple times to make sure the ranking, quality and flavors are consistent.
I would have enjoyed the Mango Habanero a little more if it was hotter, but I do realize the scoville units fluctuate by season.
Great job Natty Oaks, we will be seeing you again.
Thanks, Andy &...
Read moreJust wanted to share this, I observed this situation, there was a little group that attend attended Natty Oaks, seemed like a fun happy group. The service was very bad for them. It started when a young man asked multiple bartenders to change Chanel for them. Bar had some people but nothing crazy, they waited like 10-20 minutes I bet. Eventually this young man rose his voice at the male bartender and he was so disrespectful to the young man. Again, he’s been waiting for almost 20 minutes if I had to bet. I didn’t know these people at all. Just was relaxing having some drinks. Also saw that they ordered some food, male bartender was being very rude, guy was trying to order his food, yes he was hard to understand but later found out guy died twice and his friend was trying to help him. He was trying to pay the bartender for like 10 minutes, bartender kept avoiding him. They were playing the machine for at least a few hours I would say. At the end when the young man was getting was talking to the manager he said they lost $700-$800 on the machine and manager still didn’t want to do the right thing to split up this man’s bill that was wrong. It took the young man multiple times to explain what happened. Managers were going at him and everything and did not want to do what was right for awhile. Managers saying he was being rude all night when all he did was raise his voice for 5 seconds in the 3 hours he was there. He just wanted his bill to be right the whole time. Got charged $41 for 2 beers I think it was and a burger. Managers didn’t want to listen to him at all. Dude was barely drinking at all. This man still said he would tip like a normal person and managers still had the audacity to be disrespectful to this young man. Between the group they had to wait 10+ plus minutes multiple times for drinks. I was taking to someone in this group who said they were looking for a new bar for all their regulars who go out 6 days a week and gamble with their bartender leaving their man bar. Bar just lost thousands and thousands dollars but this male bartender wanted to be rude and not wait them. It was really embarrassing to see. I feel bad for the people that had to...
Read moreI ordered a to go order today at 1220pm. After being placed on hold for 5 min. I finally ordered. 1 large pizza( asked for pepperoni and sausage, and well done crust) and order of beef nachos. Nachos were ok. They were boxed separately so they wouldn't get soggy, which I appreciate, but that being said the to small portions of beef was kind of comical. Especially for 14.00 nachos . But taste was ok. The major issue was the pizza. Worst pizza ever in my lifetime and I absolutely love pizza. I opened the box. No sausage, cheese not even melted, just white as can be, crust was white in color. Not crisp at all. All no where close to well done how I ordered it. Bland in taste and barely any pepperoni. I mean a 5 dollar little caesars is better than this and I paid 18.00 for that pizza. They should be ashamed to sell pizza like that . I don't mean to be mean but that was worse than your 3 dollar grocery store pizza. I was hoping to love it. But it was the biggest disappointment. Took one bite and threw the whole pizza in garbage. That cook should never send a pizza out like that. I should of read reviews first, because not one person says anything good about there pizza. Maybe there other food is good, but they should 86 that pizza off there menu. I owned several bars in the past and if it isn't high quality then it shouldn't be on the menu. All the food a establishment sells is a reflection of that business. Hopefully they fix this...
