There’s nothing quite like walking into a bar and being immediately outed as not-from-around-here—especially when it’s done with the warmth of a veteran bartender who just wants to make sure you don’t get stuck. “Cash only,” she said. “And no ATM.” Challenge accepted. We dug deep and scraped together $7 in crumpled bills—just enough for two Hamm’s and a dollar tip. And honestly, we might’ve gotten a little street cred for it.
Phyllis’ is part dive, part live music haunt, part time capsule. It’s been around since 1954 and wears every year like a badge. The front room is dim, the furniture feels like it’s seen more bands than some local radio stations, and the cooler behind the bar doubles as décor and institution. There’s a whole printed flyer of who’s playing and when, and yes, we did just miss a band called Leon, The Bandit?.
Still, the place had energy. The kind of bar where the clientele slants older for the men and younger for the women, and somehow that feels perfectly normal in this space. It may have been the pre-band, post-band, or no-band crowd—we’ll never know. I was surprised the music didn’t go later, but for a neighborhood bar, that probably has less to do with vibes and more to do with ordinances and the right kind of peace with the city.
And then, of course, there was the Hamm’s. $3 cans, cold, no questions asked. As I described it in the moment, Hamm’s tastes like a water-flavored beer that had been smoking cigarettes but then brushed its teeth with Hamm’s beer before going back on its shift of being a beer. And I wouldn’t have had it any other way.
Phyllis’ isn’t trying to be polished. It’s trying to survive—and throw a good party in the process. I’d come back with more cash, more time, and a band worth chasing.
For the Hamm’s, for the honesty, and for...

Was offered a gig here, and upon arrival was rudely greeted and interrogated by the owner(??). Among the 3 band line up, was offered no understanding or help in conforming or using the provided space. Prior to our set, and during gear change, had HORRIFYINGLY discovered beer was spilled all over my equipment. For what reason, an open beer would be spilled over my gear neatly packed in the corner of the stage is beyond me. Owner aggressively insisted it was the bands fault, due to use of space provided and proceeded to berate and belittle their entertainment over their own shortcomings. Of course, to my own despair, this "accident"(???) had fried my amp and has truthfully wallowed $700 away from venues petty shortcomings.
This sort of interaction continued through the night, with small micro aggressions of pointing fingers or insinuating that the bands have advertised "BYOB" etc etc.
The owner was not around shortly after and could not be found for compensation or discussion over this occurrence. Given his aggressiveness from the beginning - and well through the night, I imagine the outcome would never be in my own favor.
The social media manager who we met later, and staff had been nothing but lovely but sadly have not represented my view of this venue. Please take warning, and do no deals with this venue or offer...
Read moreWe came across Phyllis' one night when my husband and I were looking for a bar to go to after our wedding ceremony. We were looking for somewhere that had that dive bar feel, great service and good music. When we walked into Phyllis' and sat down at the bar and spoke to their staff, looked at the beer selection , the atmosphere and music , we were sold. The owners were so friendly and accomodating. When we asked if we can have our afterparty there, they did not hesitate to say yes. They offered to decorate an area for us, and allow us to put on our playlist. Our afterparty was perfect. The owners and staff were waiting for us and our party and did such a great job at attending our large group. Everyone loved the feel of this bar ! Can't wait to have our anniversary drink...
