I've been meaning to try Small Cheval for years, since I'm always passing by their Wicker Park location. I finally decided to try them, as cheeseburgers are my favorite food. I gotta say, it was fantastic. I got the signature double cheeseburger, with fries with white cheese sauce on the side and a cookies and cream milkshake. The cheeseburger I noticed was pink in the middle, so they cooked it medium rare. I highly suggest the cashiers ask customers how they want their burger cooked. I assumed it would be cooked well done to minimize possible ingestion issues, as some people's digestive systems might not take medium rare meat well, but maybe that's on me for not having foresight. Nevertheless, it tasted great. The fries were great as well with a satisfying crisp and a seasoned salt taste. The milkshake was phenomenal. You can actually taste and eat the chocolate chips and the cookie as you're drinking the milkshake. Pleasant vibes from the cashiers. Buzzer service for when your food is ready. Spacious outside patio with a nice inner city feel. Some baby birds was chilling at my table with me. I knew they wanted some food so I shared some fries with them. They were cool. The inside dining area is a little small for my standards, but that's not a big deal. 5/5. Great place. I gotta watch my dairy intake here though. Whew that...
Read moreGood evening,
As you can see it is around closing time… I visited your west loop location around 900pm this evening for dinner for me and my boyfriend.
I ordered to go, the food took about 10 minutes to get done, and I was headed home.
Upon my arrival, what we thought would be a great dinner of burgers from one of our favorite restaurants turned into nearly a trip to the doctor.
I ordered a double cheeseburger and a hamburger with 2 golden fries totaling nearly $40.
My burgers were completely red and raw, uncooked and downright disappointing. Ofcourse I didn’t catch this until I arrived all the way home and my boyfriend but into his burger first. I attempted to call the establishment because it’s too far for me to drive back. But please. If there is anything you can do to right this, we will go with no dinner at all tonight as this just ruined both of our appetites and tarnished a bit of the respect for the food itself.
Not sure if it was cooked this way because it was rushed and almost time to close, but it was nearly an hour before hand and I am just trying to understand. I have NEVER experienced this and have come to many locations in the Chicagoland area. I’m truly disgusted.
I look forward to your response and hope this can be resolved.
Thank...
Read moreSmall Cheval Cheeseburger: Chicago's Au Cheval serves up arguably one of the best burgers in the United States. The downside is that the wait times can be a couple hours long, but I highly recommend trying it at least once. On the plus side, Au Cheval's spin-off restaurant Small Cheval offers a cheeseburger almost as good as the original with little to no wait. I believe there are nine Small Cheval locations in the Chicago area. The cheeseburger comes with two juicy beef patties (served medium), melty American cheese, crunchy pickles, onions, and creamy dijonnaise. The bun is just as vital to the beef when it comes to a great cheeseburger. Small Cheval serves theirs on a lightly toasted buttery brioche bun that is perfectly soft, chewy, and proportional to the amount of beef. For $13 you would be hard pressed to find a better burger in Chicago. Au Cheval is still the gold standard as you can add an over easy egg and thick cut maple glazed bacon, but Small Cheval is definitely no ersatz Au Cheval. Just like Au Cheval, Small Cheval's phenomenal cheeseburger is Doughboy approved...
