I have passed by this place a few times within this month. So yesterday when my mom and I passed by we just so happened to find a parking spot! Scoreeee! We went in... Taco Lulu's was jumping! We came around lunch time so it was soo busy and they also had a big delivery headed out too. They make your order fast! It's a no frills joint but they do it right!!! You go to cashier place your order and wait for them to call your number. After your number is called and you get your food then you head over to the other side to be seated.
My mom and I wanted Enchiladas with mole sauce but they didn't carry it. We were bummed a little but Taco Lulu has burritos, tacos, fajitas, nachos etc. Tangent..Someone walked past me after I ordered with the most delicious looking chicken taco salad that have seen in a minute!!! So anyway we each ordered Steak Nachos with everything add guacamole and a peach margarita on the rocks. It was very affordable! I was bummed when the cashier said that they didn't use Chihuahua cheese for the nachos but ordered anyway and was surprised at how good it was.
My mom thought the margarita was too sweet and the nice owner brought her another on the house. I enjoyed mine. It could have a splash more alcohol but it was a nice size about 10-12 ounces for $11! That's a steal of a deal! My nachos were massive and well executed. The queso sauce that was used was very tasty. It didn't have that cheap velveeta flavor at all. I noticed the tacos looked very fresh and delicious as well. I met the owner Mike who was there bussing tables, making margaritas and being very polite. He said he named his restaurant after his cute dog Lulu! So precious! I will totally return!!!
**each table had green and red salsa that was just taken out of the fridge. I could tell because the bottles were cold. I appreciate that extra step! Plenty of places just let the salsa sit out, never refrigerate and become...
Read moreTaco Lulú is a unique spot in downtown Chicago, standing out with its authentic Mexican look and inviting atmosphere. The moment you step in, the vibrant colors, traditional decor, and the aroma of sizzling meat transport you straight to the streets of Mexico. But as charming as the place is, the real star here is the food.
I ordered three tacos de arrachera, and they were exactly what my body needed on a Friday night. Each taco came fully loaded, wrapped in two warm, soft corn tortillas that held everything together beautifully. The arrachera was juicy and packed with rich, smoky flavors, cooked to perfection with just the right amount of char. There was a subtle crispiness to the edges of the meat, adding an incredible texture to every bite.
The toppings complemented the steak flawlessly, fresh cilantro, diced onions, and a hint of lime, bringing balance to the deep umami of the meat. But the real magic happened when I added their salsa. It had a nice kick, just enough heat to wake up the senses without overpowering the flavors. The spice tied everything together, elevating the already delicious tacos into an unforgettable experience.
Each bite was pure happiness, the kind of food that satisfies not just hunger but the soul. If you're in downtown Chicago craving authentic Mexican street-style tacos, Taco Lulú is a must-visit. The flavors, textures, and that perfect salsa heat make for an unbeatable...
Read moreI placed an online order. This was my 1st time here so I was unfamiliar with the process upon entering. I told a young man that I was picking up order 95 and he looked so confused. He said you mean 195. I said no, 95. He said something to the people at the other end and told me they'd get my order ready. I walked to the other end and waited. About 7 min later I started glancing over the area and took a few pics for my review. The lady at the register said something in Spanish and 2 of the other workers turned around and started looking at me. I went back to my original spot and waited some more. They continued to glance up at me and I was getting uncomfortable so I walked to the register and asked the lady was my order ready. She shrugged her shoulders and said I don't know and looked disgusted. Um, excuse me?... A guy stepped up and so I asked him. He looked around and my order was already sitting on the counter. He said "online". I said, "yes! Online." It's like they were not familiar with online ordering or something. I didn't like the lady's attitude at all.
The steak tacos were good but I'd skip the al pastor. It was just ok. The steak was tender and seasoned well. The beans and rice were just ok. I thought I'd found a new weekly taco location but I don't deal with bad customer service. That was my 1st and last time going to...
