While Hruska's is a "Seen on TV" place, it definitely deserves the reputation. For those curious kolach (or koláč) is a Czech pastry typically sweet like doughnuts. Hruska's also serves klobasnek (or klobásník) which are savory pastry rolls more associated with Texans of Czech descent often called kolaches as well. With that out of the way, let's get to why I think Hruska's is an awesome place to get some breakfast. I mention "get" as if you've expecting anywhere to sit down, the best you'll find is some outdoor seating. A nice treat during the late spring through early fall...but a Utah winter might not be a fun experience eating outside. On the other hand, the inside of Hruska's is small, but very cozy. They also have hints of their Texan heritage interspersed in the decor. They do have drinks seved in a small cooler, but that's their only drink offerings. The main draw, of course, are their kolaches. Not only for the novelty, but also for how darn good they are. Their kolaches are baked fresh in-store each day and that dough is so soft and tasty I enjoy every bite of the dough. It's also very sturdy and easily holds up all the goodies in their sweet and savory rolls. Their fillings are also extremely good with a wide variety of flavors to choose from. My personal favorite is the strawberry and Nutella on the sweet side. Pairs rather well together. Their berry kolaches are also very good. Worth trying the different fillings. Then we get to their savory rolls. Yes, there's the traditional roll with Texas sausage (that's the classic klobasnek), and there's the sausage and gravy roll as well with is really savory and that gravy is nice and thick and creamy. Then you have what are literally omlettes in a roll. I personally love the variations on the bacon, egg, and cheese omlettes. The eggs are just right and the bacon is done well. Also for those times you want savory, but without the meat, there's the "Impossible " meats, and some awesome meatless varieties as well. Those come in handy on a Lenten Friday. They keep nice and fresh as well carrying them from West Jordan to oh, say Kearns. The only downside? They are open only as long as they have kolaches to sell. On most days, you can still get most of their selection around 8 AM, but on some mornings...Black Friday, I'm looking at you...they will sellout fast. They are that good that they can sell that quick some days. Also, half a dozen kolaches will run about $15 including tax, so they are priced than doughnuts, but they are definitely worth the price. If you happen to be in the Wasatch Front in the morning and can spare a few minutes off 15, 80 or Bangerter, definitely don't miss coming to Hruska's here or at their...
Read moreI used to love to come here, but I was treated so horribly this morning by Aiden I won't come back. I did a large online order to take to work for my birthday. When I arrived and asked for the order he started looking all over like he didn't know about the order and didn't know where it would be. I pulled up the order on my phone to try to help him find the order number, but apparently that was offensive. He came back and said we'll just have to box that up for you which will take 5 minutes. I quietly said 'oh I thought it was supposed to be ready'. I mean that's why I ordered it ahead of time. I wasn't too worried since 5 minutes isn't too long, but then Aiden just proceeded to treat me like I was a complete jerk for mentioning that I thought my order would be ready and trying to help by showing him my order number. Look, I know these guys get up really early and it might make him a little grumpy, but maybe he's not the best person to have in the front for customer service if he can't even consider apologizing for a forgotten order and instead treat the customer like they're in the wrong. The owner was walking out at the same time I was and he apologized that he was rude to me. I was already a little worried that I might be late for work, but as I was driving away I checked the order and they missed several things, so I had to go back. By this time I was pretty annoyed at the way I'd been treated and that they didn't have the order ready and then got it wrong. I went back in and was pretty flustered and angry that I had to deal with a rude employee again, so I asked for the owner since he knew the situation, but he wasn't there anymore. The manager got me my stuff. I let Aiden know that the owner had to apologize for him. By this time I was completely late for work and I was in a terrible mood on my birthday and even shed a few tears. I definitely didn't deserve that treatment. The food is always good here and the owner seemed nice enough, but I think they need to put Aiden in a different position where he won't deal directly...
Read moreGood kolaches and a really cute environment. I apologize in advance for the long review but it's quite comical. I was born and raised in Houston and have driven up highway 71 on the way to Austin and stopped at Hruska's bakery probably a thousand times over the last 20 to 30 years to get gas, use the bathroom, pick up some venison sausage and of course enjoy their bakery selection. We walked in were the only ones there as customers and I asked the girl behind the counter is this any relation to the one south of Austin on highway 71? She looked at me with a glaze look on her face and said I don't know hold on. She proceeded to talk to the three or four other employees behind the counter and they all looked at her like deer and headlights and said they did not know. She then returned to the ordering station and said no I don't think they're related. We then looked around the room and you'll see in my pictures literally every wall was covered with signs that said howdy, the Texas flag, every Texas memorabilia you could think of and they even have a kolache called the Texan. I went to their website and on there it clearly states that it's three kids from Texas so I think it's almost comical that these employees don't know the history behind the place that they're working at and probably not even been to their own company website. I proceeded to point out all the Texas memorabilia around the room to her and said yeah I think these are related to the people from Texas and she was almost amazed that there was so much Texas stuff staring her in the face that she probably had never seen every day that she stands there. Kolaches are great environment is cute and will definitely go back but maybe the owner should inform their employees of their heritage and why a Texas based family business is in Utah with four locations that we will be happy to start...
