I have been to Sassafras a few times now and my incredible experiences here have prompted me to write a review! I have tried the fried chicken sandwich, the mac & cheese, the double-cheeseburger, the biscuits and gravy, and a couple of their desserts. I must say, the fried chicken sandwich is, by far, the BEST chicken sandwich that I have ever had in my life! It is absolutely phenomenal! The meat is so tender that it reminds me of the texture of a properly cooked fresh fish. The texture is absolutely outstanding and the pickles and sauce combined with the Nashville Hot spices that it is fried in makes for a decadent flavor combination like no other! I ordered the double-cheeseburger today, and was absolutely blown away by it! It is probably the BEST burger I have had in West Palm Beach! I ordered it with a side of their homemade ranch dressing, and the combination of that, with the spices that they put on the burger was truly incredible! It was perfectly cooked and insanely amazing!
The menu is a little bit on the pricey side, however, it is 100% worth every single last penny that it costs! Eating here is more of an investment in yourself and your soul, because the food is just that good! Typically, if I think that the food prices are a little high, I would suggest lowering the prices, but the pricing here is actually below the value of the food that you get. Meaning, the quality of the food that you will receive here, by far, outweighs the cost of the food, which isn't even that expensive in reality. So, if you are like me and you look at the prices first before deciding to eat somewhere, please trust me when I say that you will NOT regret spending a single penny here, because I believe that the culinary experience you will have here is worth substantially more than you will spend! And, I would recommend checking Groupon before scheduling a reservation here, because there are often good Groupon deals that will make this an even better choice for you!
All in all, I would give them 10 stars out of 5 if I could, it is really just that good! I hope you all enjoy...
Read moreSunday, February 16th, I called to inquire about their Sunday brunch since I couldn't find a menu online. I was told "it's mostly breakfast food". Okkkkk, I asked would they have the pancakes pictured on Google and the woman that answered said yes they would have their corn meal pancakes. The woman booked a reservation on my behalf and about an hour and half later we arrived a bit earlier than our reservation time.
We stood and waited and waited and waited some more at the hostess podium while patrons stared at us while eating their food. Eventually, a woman comes by, explaining that it would be a long time before she could get us seated. Basically asking us to bow out and leave. I said, "should you ask me whether or not we have a reservation?" to which she yells back, "I already know!". I ask how could you have known? You never even asked my name, you simply tried to turn us away. She then went through a whole, angry spiel about two of her waiters calling in sick so even if she sat us, she wouldn't have anyone to bring us food.
We were eventually seated outside in the heat and a young man brought us water. We asked to move to another one of their outside wooden tables in a little less direct sunlight. He approved but had to be asked would he please clean the table of the food that was on it attracting flies. He did a poor job as he really didn't want to clean the table to begin with. He actually was nice so I assume he was filling in and having to wear multiple hats due to the waiter shortage and was above cleaning dirty tables but that was the straw the broke the camel's back and we simply walked away to another establishment...which was exactly what the manager wanted all along.
Reading other reviews, this is clearly consistent disorganized, non-customer focused poor behavior with a mixture of other things going on as well. If this is how you conduct yourself in the open dining area I can only imagine what corners are being cut in the back of the house / the kitchen.
Despite us wanting to try Sassafras for months,...
Read moreWorth Every Penny. These days I rarely feel like I'm getting my money's worth when the bill shows up to the table. Sassafras is another story entirely. My lady and I found parking easily across the street on a Friday night, 8PM reservation. I have nothing to complain about. The staff was friendly and on the ball and the food was outrageous. We sampled many things from the menu and each item was better than the last. I don't pretend to be a food critic but as someone who can be skeptical when it comes to experimental gastronomics I was blown away. I would describe Sassafras' menu as Southern comfort food with a twist. We started with the pimento cheese which was delectable, followed by the Flamin' Hot Chicken Skins which I have been raving about for days now. They're out of this world good, like what I'd want as my last meal on earth quality. I'm a big gin guy so Manny the Mixologist brought us each a Young Lavender drink which was artfully and lovingly crafted and decorated. Next came the House-cured Coppa which was a fantastic blend of flavors followed by the Watermelon & Beets all of which were a bold mix of different tastes and mouthfeel. For our main courses I got the double cheeseburger (I'm a burger fanatic so I have to try the burger, if there's one on the menu, regardless of where I am. Note: this one made it into my top 5). My gal got the Local Shrimp and Grits. We were both blown away. Everything that night was cooked to perfection and prepared with visible and tastable passion and care. To finish we ended with the House made Soft Serve Ice cream. The whole experience was a palatable triumph. Chef James and the rest of the cook staff are masters of their craft and it shows in their work. I left feeling completely satisfied and full which is not how I usually leave restaurants nowadays. I strongly recommend giving Sassafras a try, you'll be doing your stomach and yourself a favor, you won't be disappointed. I intend on making a pilgrimage...
