This was a GREAT find right off of Clematis. We hit two other restaurants on Clematis during out visit and this was the best experience. Or even as my 15 yo daughter stated after our meal "this has been the best customer service that we've ever had at any restaurant!". I had made reservations with a note that we were celebrating a birthday. When we arrived the hostess wished us a Happy birthday. Then seated us at an outdoor table (I also preferred the outdoor off Clematis as crowds weren't hovering and walking near you as you ate). Melanie was our server and she was wonderful. She gave great suggestions and was on top of things if it was running behind. We ordered the ribs which were made with a great BBQ sauce - they weren't completely fall off the bone but still tender. Their beans are made with I believe Kidney beans, so it was different but a good kind of different for baked beans. And the cornbread has a bit of honey. Those were so good we ordered more to-go to bring to the beach the next day. My daughter had the Mac and cheese which she loved. And our table also ordered the Chicken Sandwich. The pimento cheese added a nice twist and the chicken had a perfectly fried breading on it. I don't know if they do it every night but at the end of our meal they brought us each little cones of their home made ice cream!! What a wonderful touch to really show hospitality. And then we were still surprised by their apple crisp a la mode. If you order anything, you must order this dessert. There is a great balance of tartness and sweetness in this dessert. The flavor and thickness of the crust truly makes this dish - so much so that as I type this my mouth is literally watering wanting it again!

The venue itself is super nice, modern and light. Bar set up is pretty small but good enough. We came for brunch on a Sunday and it was half way packed in the restaurant. I like that you can see the chef cook and there is an open kitchen therefore, you know exactly what you are getting and you even have options to tip chefs. The food was OK. I wouldn’t say great. The fried chicken and waffles were a solid three out of 10 there was no seasoning on the chicken which made it pretty hard to eat. The spicy maple syrup was just regular syrup. They charged $10 for two biscuits as a side which was on the expensive side and I will say the biscuits were good the onion jam that it came with was fantastic. Do I think it’s worth $10 absolutely not. For two biscuit that is kind of crazy. My husband been ordered the cheeseburger and that was cooked very well. The food came out very fast which I was surprised about. I ordered the bottomless Mimosas was underwhelmed with how they refill it. Our server seemed like she was always in a rush and running around. I never even got to tell her to take back the chicken and waffles because she would simply come and then run away very quickly. You can see the food runners working extremely hard. Overall I would give it another try. But I’m not dying to return or tell my friends bout this place. There are also no coasters so our entire table was wet and slippery because of the plastic material of the table. I found myself constantly wiping it with my own napkin.

Beautiful ambience, great service, with hit or miss food and a fancy bar. Community seating as in there are very few tables and it is shared with other people dining out. It's very noisy inside so it's harder to have a conversation with a larger group. The staff was all super nice and very good at what they do. They use very dim lighting with breathtaking table set up. Loved the plates. The drinks are strong. To be honest, we had high expectations of this place and the food let us down. We ordered a lot of different dishes and the only thing that really was a total hit at our table was the chicken skin. Oue party of 8 agreed the chicken skin was probably the best dish out of everything we ordered. The squash blossoms with blue crabs, the oysters, and the cornbread were also delish. Worse was a toss up between the gumbo, the fried chicken, and the shrimp and grits. The gumbo was served not hot and the shrimp and grits had barely any flavor. The fried chicken was over battered and really greasy, you could taste lumps of flour in the batter. The house made coppa was also really salty. The fish dip was super fishy. The chicken liver pate left a strange aftertaste in your mouth.. The beignets were also something we would not order again because it was super heavy and dough-ey and not fluffy at all. We really wanted to love this place and unfortunately it fell short for us.

I have been to Sassafras a few times now and my incredible experiences here have prompted me to write a review! I have tried the fried chicken sandwich, the mac & cheese, the double-cheeseburger, the biscuits and gravy, and a couple of their desserts. I must say, the fried chicken sandwich is, by far, the BEST chicken sandwich that I have ever had in my life! It is absolutely phenomenal! The meat is so tender that it reminds me of the texture of a properly cooked fresh fish. The texture is absolutely outstanding and the pickles and sauce combined with the Nashville Hot spices that it is fried in makes for a decadent flavor combination like no other! I ordered the double-cheeseburger today, and was absolutely blown away by it! It is probably the BEST burger I have had in West Palm Beach! I ordered it with a side of their homemade ranch dressing, and the combination of that, with the spices that they put on the burger was truly incredible! It was perfectly cooked and insanely amazing!

The menu is a little bit on the pricey side, however, it is 100% worth every single last penny that it costs! Eating here is more of an investment in yourself and your soul, because the food is just that good! Typically, if I think that the food prices are a little high, I would suggest lowering the prices, but the pricing here is actually below the value of the food that you get. Meaning, the quality of the food that you will receive here, by far, outweighs the cost of the food, which isn't even that expensive in reality. So, if you are like me and you look at the prices first before deciding to eat somewhere, please trust me when I say that you will NOT regret spending a single penny here, because I believe that the culinary experience you will have here is worth substantially more than you will spend! And, I would recommend checking Groupon before scheduling a reservation here, because there are often good Groupon deals that will make this an even better choice for you!

All in all, I would give them 10 stars out of 5 if I could, it is really just that good! I hope you all enjoy...

Sunday, February 16th, I called to inquire about their Sunday brunch since I couldn't find a menu online. I was told "it's mostly breakfast food". Okkkkk, I asked would they have the pancakes pictured on Google and the woman that answered said yes they would have their corn meal pancakes. The woman booked a reservation on my behalf and about an hour and half later we arrived a bit earlier than our reservation time.

We stood and waited and waited and waited some more at the hostess podium while patrons stared at us while eating their food. Eventually, a woman comes by, explaining that it would be a long time before she could get us seated. Basically asking us to bow out and leave. I said, "should you ask me whether or not we have a reservation?" to which she yells back, "I already know!". I ask how could you have known? You never even asked my name, you simply tried to turn us away. She then went through a whole, angry spiel about two of her waiters calling in sick so even if she sat us, she wouldn't have anyone to bring us food.

We were eventually seated outside in the heat and a young man brought us water. We asked to move to another one of their outside wooden tables in a little less direct sunlight. He approved but had to be asked would he please clean the table of the food that was on it attracting flies. He did a poor job as he really didn't want to clean the table to begin with. He actually was nice so I assume he was filling in and having to wear multiple hats due to the waiter shortage and was above cleaning dirty tables but that was the straw the broke the camel's back and we simply walked away to another establishment...which was exactly what the manager wanted all along.

Reading other reviews, this is clearly consistent disorganized, non-customer focused poor behavior with a mixture of other things going on as well. If this is how you conduct yourself in the open dining area I can only imagine what corners are being cut in the back of the house / the kitchen.

Despite us wanting to try Sassafras for months,...

Worth Every Penny. These days I rarely feel like I'm getting my money's worth when the bill shows up to the table. Sassafras is another story entirely. My lady and I found parking easily across the street on a Friday night, 8PM reservation. I have nothing to complain about. The staff was friendly and on the ball and the food was outrageous. We sampled many things from the menu and each item was better than the last. I don't pretend to be a food critic but as someone who can be skeptical when it comes to experimental gastronomics I was blown away. I would describe Sassafras' menu as Southern comfort food with a twist. We started with the pimento cheese which was delectable, followed by the Flamin' Hot Chicken Skins which I have been raving about for days now. They're out of this world good, like what I'd want as my last meal on earth quality. I'm a big gin guy so Manny the Mixologist brought us each a Young Lavender drink which was artfully and lovingly crafted and decorated. Next came the House-cured Coppa which was a fantastic blend of flavors followed by the Watermelon & Beets all of which were a bold mix of different tastes and mouthfeel. For our main courses I got the double cheeseburger (I'm a burger fanatic so I have to try the burger, if there's one on the menu, regardless of where I am. Note: this one made it into my top 5). My gal got the Local Shrimp and Grits. We were both blown away. Everything that night was cooked to perfection and prepared with visible and tastable passion and care. To finish we ended with the House made Soft Serve Ice cream. The whole experience was a palatable triumph. Chef James and the rest of the cook staff are masters of their craft and it shows in their work. I left feeling completely satisfied and full which is not how I usually leave restaurants nowadays. I strongly recommend giving Sassafras a try, you'll be doing your stomach and yourself a favor, you won't be disappointed. I intend on making a pilgrimage...
