Black Bear Diner West Valley — Restaurant in West Valley City

From start to finish, it was a bad dining experience, mostly due to poor service from our waitress S.L. Food was good, service not so good.

The table we sat at was dirty (Coffee spills, hot sauce and egg on the table), the floor below was also dirty. My husband asked the waitress if we could get something to wipe the table, she handed us a washcloth and we wiped it ourselves.

The Dinner I ordered, comes with two sides, I was never asked what I wanted with it. She never offered any sauces for my hubbys fries. She never asked if he wanted a refill.

The food came after like a 30 minute wait. I asked the waitress where the soup was that came with it, she said “Oh, sorry we just ran out. We have salad?” “I said sure I’ll have that.” She confirmed she was bringing it and asked if I wanted ranch, I said yes. My husband also asked for a drink refill. We had to ask for sauce for his fries.

She came back to our table, a few minutes later and said, sorry that’s the wrong plate, did you touch it? I said I put black pepper on it. She grabbed it and gave to the correct customer. Smh!

She never brought the damn salad or the soda refill at all. Just kept walking past our table. I looked across from us, another couple never got any beverage at all and had been waiting at least 15 mins.

After getting fed up waiting another 15 mins for a damn refill and the salad. I took matters into my own hands, got up, the waitress said bye, and I said, “What do you mean bye? We never got our check yet and I’m getting a refill that we have been waiting on!”

I walked a few steps around the corner and asked the other employee for a refill. This literally took me less than one minute.

I asked her for the check and told her that she better remove the salad that we never got.

Sadly, with that poor quality of service, we did not tip her at all. I would have but her effort was lacking badly. Typically we tip well for good service. We paid full price.

I usually am more patient but this was really a frustrating experience. I love black bear diner but to me the service made it hard to enjoy.

After I posted this I read similar reviews that are the same issues = poor service, dirty tables & floors. Management needs to step it up. This place is giving the black bear diner...

Very disappointed today. I had ordered The Volcano & a cup of soup. The “cup of soup” was maybe 4 oz. The Volcano which has 3 good sized pancakes only came with 2 pats of butter. I then asked for “extra butter, please”. The waitress brought 2 more. I then told her “more butter, please!” So, she brought 1 more pat of butter and scampered off. When she came around again, I again told her “more butter, please! My Mom would put 3-4 pats of butter per pancake!” (By this time, my “hot cakes” are about lukewarm, and I’m getting quite perturbed.) I finally had to ask for a go box. , as it seems if there is any hope of having my “hot cakes” hot and not dry, I’ll have to heat them & butter them at home. My son then ordered us a brownie for us to take with us. She brings it. It’s wrapped in plastic wrap and in a box. At least it is supposedly a brownie. We just got home and are expecting a really yummy brownie. Well. It is brown! But, it’s about the consistency of a slab of dried out lava or brown pumice stone. My son cut it in half, and thought that warming it up would help soften it up a bit. It didn’t. He showed me the half he didn’t warm up, and it too is rock hard. I tried dunking my half in milk. Wet pumice stone. Needless to say, I really question whether or not we’ll return. BTW - there was a sign up with an apology for being “short staffed”. My husband & I put in an online order, he got the BBQ Ribs & Tri-tip meal with the loaded baked potato & Parmesan toast (with an extra order of clam chowder soup), I got the California burger. Normally, we’ve had good experiences there, but thanks to this visit, we’ll be rethinking ever going back. We paid an extra $3.50 for a cup of soup that was maybe a half cup, and it was stuck to the bottom of the container it came in. The ribs, there were only 3 small ones… (for the price it was shocking) the ribs were actually jerky. It was so overcooked that the bones were stuck in the meat. The tri-tip was so fatty it was inedible. (At least what was cooked on it was the right temperature) The baked potato had a little bit of bacon, no sour cream, no cheese. The Parmesan toast, looked like the cheese had been melted in the microwave. Completely inedible. My burger was cooked on one side, the other side was completely raw & cold in the middle. The fries that came with it were soggy & very cold. Basically, we got a meal, even paid for extras that we didn’t receive, & what we did get in that meal ended up being so over cooked, undercooked or cooked so badly that a couple bites in & we had to throw it away. Can’t believe that they allowed anything like that to be served… who would okay that to be sent from the kitchen? We would have been better off going to McDonald’s.
