Such friendly people! They welcome everyone like family! So disappointed that the food was not at the same level
my apologies for posting this a second time, but google would not let me respond to the owners response.
He asked me to elaborate on my original review.
This past weekend my wife and I took a small road trip to spend the day in Maine. On our way, we stopped at Paul's Diner for breakfast. The staff was very warm and welcoming, they greeted you as family, or a long lost friend. The ambiance is quaint and inviting. Our Server gave us some great information on the menu choices, telling us how much is made daily and in house. She spoke of the menu almost as a source of pride, and this was so good to see. My wife ordered a waffle with strawberries and I opted to try their Chicken and Waffle plate. Once again, she told us how the chicken is prepared fresh daily and complimented our choices. We were seated close to the the kitchen and an area where the waffle irons are. We watched our waffles get poured and cooked, and within a short time, yes a server was mixing up more fresh waffle batter. When the waffles were done, and they were not brought to our table, we figured they were for a different order. She opened the waffle iron, took the waffle out, flipped it over and placed it back on the open waffle iron. There they sat for a while, until the chicken was done. Needless to say, you always eat with your eyes first, and the waffles looked amazing. My wife's was covered with a generous amount of fresh sliced strawberries, and mine topped with a fried chicken cutlet. Admittedly, I should have taken photos, because they looked that good. Now for the letdown part. The waffles were barely warm to the touch, nice crisp to the exterior, but dry as can be inside. It didn't look overcooked, but it sure was dry. My waffle was the same. The chicken cutlet again, looked great. Cutting into it, showed it spent way too much time in the fryer and the breading had gotten very dark in spots, and underneath (breading had developed a pocket between it and the chicken) the chicken had developed a tough skin like surface that actually peeled off the chicken. Eating it, something tasted "off". I wondered if it was the breading, the chicken, maybe the oil? The breading tasted fine and did not have that same "off" flavor. trying the chicken alone without the breading, the taste was more apparent. Don't know the cause, but the chicken just didn't taste right. I had just a couple of bites of chicken and decided to just eat my waffle as we had a long day ahead, and didn't wanna risk an upset stomach. The server asked if I wanted to take the remainder with me, and I politely declined. I did tell our server about the chicken, and not wanting other diners to experience the same, encouraged her to tell the kitchen to taste it. I told her, I just wanted to let them know, just incase by some oversight it slipped past the cook. I explained I didn't want anything comped and paid our bill in full and left a generous tip as again, the staff is fantastic. Everyone has an off day, even the greatest of chefs have them. I would be willing to try them again when we head up that way again. We usually use the three strikes rule, and this was only strike one. Maybe our next visit will redeem Paul's and if so, my review will...
Read moreTraveling from out-of-state, we stopped at this happily busy place last Saturday morning based on Google review stars. We were seated promptly by a charming young woman and soon after, greeted by our friendly, knowledgeable and efficient server.
I ordered the delicious-sounding Vinny Ray breakfast sandwich consisting of egg (custom cooked), spinach, tomato, avocado and choice of cheese, on a toasted English muffin. My companion chose the Kate omelet, one of the 31 described on the menu! We were hungry with high expectations.
Our food arrived. The omelet was enormous, sharing the plate with a huge mound of what appeared to be deep-fried âhome friesâ with a suspicious yellow tinge. The eggs, stuffed with a generous quantity of three meats, were tasty enough, but all the cheese seemed to be at one end of the omelet.
My sandwich sat open-faced on the plate, show-casing itâs ingredients in a stark way. Staring up at me on one half of the muffin was a clump of almost-overcooked spinach topped by two slices of yellowish orangey tomato (in August). The other half held the egg, nicely over-easy as requested but lukewarm, atop a slice of unmelted cheese. The most memorable part of my meal was the avocado - two slices of cooked or maybe previously frozen avocado, looking a very un-avocado green, with the texture of peanut butter.
The host and wait staff seemed all to be friendly and efficient, enjoying their interactions with customers. Perhaps the kitchen is staffed by earnest beginners with lots of community support, otherwise, I donât understand the rave reviews and...
Read moreHaving a tough day, decided to treat myself to a quick breakfast at Paul's. Good food always cheers you up. I don't usually go out solo but trying to pick myself up. It was my first time in. I sat the counter by myself, my drink order was taken pretty quickly. It was very busy but again I was by myself at the counter. I ordered my food and waited. And waited. And waited. After thirty minutes, no check in by my waitress, I decided to leave(also had to to make an appt). At this point I'm hungry and not feeling great. My waitress noticed me leaving and stops me, asks if she can check on the food. Food is ready and she brings it out.i just take it to go. It was 35 minutes from order to getting food for just myself, like eggs.
Idk it was busy I get it. 35 minutes for eggs benedict, not good. I just left feeling so defeated. Like I popped in to treat myself because I was feeling down then was forgotten about at the restaurant and had to leave hungry and still pay full price and tip($40)!
It was just not a great experience on a day when I really needed to have just like a good experience.
Thank you Sal for your response - I did order the benny and a few additional sides. It is what it is, I appreciate you responding. I will remove my review and wish...
