More food hell in Denver, as usual. Duped by overrated Google reviews.
Average sushi, sashimi drowned in ponzu sauce for no reason, inflated prices, and bad wait service. The decor inside reminds me of a 60s barbershop. We definitely will not be returning.
We sat at the sushi bar. The chefs were about a 5 on a 1 to 10 scale of friendliness. The waitress was clueless. For a restaurant that was nowhere close to full, it took her a long time to come over the first time. She first said would you like any drinks, then when we said no just waters, she replied, do you want water? Isn’t it a given that you would give somebody water at a restaurant? I’ve never had that question posed to me ever at a restaurant I don’t think. Lol.
The nigiri was average size portions, and tasted average. Nothing great here nothing special at all, but not bad. One thing that did catch me off guard was the sashimi. We ordered tuna, Scottish salmon and yellowtail sashimi off the sushi menu and it came 4 pieces to a plate, each in a puddle of ponzu sauce. Who drowns sashimi in ponzu sauce? WHO PUTS SALMON IN A PUDDLE OF PONZU SAUCE?? The whole idea of sashimi is to taste the fish and the complexities. What are you trying to hide by drowning everything in Ponzu sauce??? Weird. The California rolls were of course made with fake crab “krab” (no surprise). The Crunchy California roll was average. Too much sauce.
It took probably 10 minutes to get our check from the waitress who was in the back doing who knows what. She brought our check and then we didn’t see her again for another 10 minutes. I had a flag the sushi bar chef with my credit card in order to pay these people so we could leave. After we paid and we had already been there for close to an hour and 30 minutes, which was way too long, we got up to leave and the sushi chef said oh wait wait, they had cut an orange for us to eat. LMAO.
One of the strangest experiences I have ever had at a sushi restaurant, and I’ve eaten some very weird sushi restaurants, in some very weird places, in some very weird cities.
The food quality gets 3 stars. The food presentation gets 1.5 stars. The service...
Read moreAmazing work done by Joe! I've been to quite a few sushi places around Denver and I've made a few trips to Japan but this is one of the best. Tucked into a small strip of land between I-25 and Melody Rd is a small little strip mall. There you'll find a small sushi restaurant called Sushi North. Walk in and you're transported from the humble strip mall atmosphere to a progressive and unique dining experience. You'll meet T the waiter, Joe and June the chefs all very welcoming and ready to help you relax and dine on some of the better sushi Denver has to offer. Now I'll be the first to say that everything on the menu looks great, but when it comes down to it letting Joe be creative is where it's at. Omakase!!! A word you should remember. It means "I'll leave it up to you"... Some of the better dishes I had were left up to the creativity of Joe the sushi chef. I had Spanish mackerel with burdock root, fresh ground ginger and scallion, after I was done he fried the fish he had cut the sushi from providing me with a beautiful treat. Amazing Toro with fresh Wasabi and caviar. Unagi, sweet and grilled, Natto with quail egg, seaweed and scallions and quail egg with hot sauce, scallions! All these dishes expertly presented, hand crafted and to die for! I suggest pairing these dishes with Kurosawa sake! If you're up on 120th and I-25 u highly suggest and recommend that you pay Sushi North a visit! You...
Read moreOn the way to taking my kids roller skating over Thanksgiving break, I noticed this place and wondered why I hadn't noticed it before. Because - they opened just before Thanksgiving! They are tucked in the corner of the little strip mall right behind Wendy's.
So I tried them out for a weekday lunch. The interior is nice; upscale modern. I don't eat raw fish (sashimi), so I ordered two rolls. They started me off with a small cucumber and shrimp(?) meat salad. The sushi rolls were very good - tasty, fresh, good sized. My asking how long they'd been there started a conversation with the hostess/server and sushi chef. Very nice people. The menu did seem pricey for the 'burbs. They said it's because they use top quality ingredients. I'm not a sushi connoisseur to notice flavor nuances...I only notice if the fish is not super fresh. My husband can pack away the sushi plus we have kids to feed, so along with freshness and taste - price is a factor for us.
There aren't many sushi places close by I-25 up here, so if you want good quality sushi and don't mind paying a little more for it, Sushi North is worth a try. My husband and I are always saying we need more sushi places up here - so I hope...
