The four stars is for the restaurant itself. This review is regarding a waitress they have working there, Kate. She was a horrible waitress. I asked for a Diet Coke or Diet Pepsi, whichever they have and she told me they have "Mexican Coke" what the hell is that?! I said, you don't have Diet Pepsi, she said yeah we do, I was like well that's what I asked for.
She was not attentive and literally forgot about us sitting in the back. I had to get up and go ask someone if she was still there! The guy I asked said she was still there and he would send her back and even then she took a bit to come back to the table. The place wasn't even crowded. Anyway, Kate finally comes and takes our to go order, since we wanted to take some food home too. Comes back with the to go food and checks, there were three of us and she brought three separate checks, great! Well we tipped according to what we felt she deserved (even then, she actually got more than what she deserved). Also by the way, anytime we go out to eat, we are VERY generous tippers, but do tip accordingly.
I go to the washroom and come back and she was at the table talking to my sister and when I walked up, I heard her saying, she left me 10% and you left me 18% and she left me 15% and I just wanna know why? Was there something wrong with my service? She was legit upset! I said to her wait, you're actually questioning your tip? She kept saying that she wanted to know if there was something wrong with the service, but she knows what she was doing. I honestly never in my life have ever had anyone do something like this, I was shocked! Not to mention there were other people sitting around and she was pointing at each of us telling us what we gave her for a tip! It was the most absurd thing! The audacity!
So she finally walks away and I go ask for the manager, who happened to be the guy that I asked if she was still there. His name was Sam and he was very nice and very apologetic, he said he was embarrassed and that he would let the owner know. I sure hope he did because employees like this (speaking of employees like that, there were a couple of them behind the deli counter giving us some of the hardest looks, they must be friends!) are going to drive away customers! But I do have to say, the food is amazing and it is a...
Read moreThe menu is fresh and thoughtfully crafted. As far as the prices, yes, it maybe feels a bit higher than surrounding area, but you are paying for mindfully curated ingredients more so than your average restaurant meal. The turkey sandwich felt elevated and unique, but perhaps could have done with less turkey and more toppings. The cut of the fries was a bit off in my opinion as the ratio of potato to crust was heavy on the potato leading to a rather dry fry. However, there are as many opinions about fries as there are ways to make them so take that with a grain of salt--I'm sure other people like them this way. The artichoke aioli was a bright spot and did help balance some of the dryness. The portion of fries that comes with the sandwich is quite small which is notable and I can't comment as to weather or not the "Add On" portion is the same for $6. The Figgy Green Salad was nicely mixed rather than carelessly piled together and was perfectly dressed--not too much nor too little of anything.
To what was said about the coffee mugs, yes, the handles are totally ridiculous. Rather than enhancing the experience into something unique, it instead proved a frustrating way to consume a "cappuccino" (which--sorry, I'm even annoyed at myself for sounding pretentious--was really a latte).
Our service was friendly, but extremely slow even though the restaurant was quite empty. We were in the restaurant about 35 minutes before we were actually eating (we ordered drinks the first time the waitress came and food the second time without ever asking for more time to look over the menu). I don't believe this was the fault of our waitress as she was quite attentive whenever we did request something (salt+pepper, more water), but an unknown, behind the scenes factor.
The atmosphere here is really great for fostering conversation--well lit, tables spaced far enough to hear the conversation going on at your own table, etc. Those things can feel hard to come by sometimes, so such a relaxed environment to eat upscale food is a strong point of difference for Moveable Feast.
Overall, though not 100% impressed, I would try eating here again because of the thoughtfulness of the food. If they had a larger assortment of small plates, I could definitely see myself enjoying coming with...
Read moreHonestly if I could give this place 100 stars I would. After stumbling upon them online in search of healthy restaurants that have options for those with allergies, I had to try them out. Not only are they farm to table, which is a win for our family who eats mostly organic, but they have lots of healthy options for the whole family. Every time we go we remind them of my allergies and they double check with the chef to ensure I’m good to go! And go I can honestly eat a lot off the menu despite not being able to eat dairy or eggs.
Also, the bar is a spot you have to grab a drink too. Old Fashioned is a favorite of ours and there’s only one other spot in the burbs that is comparable. Moveable Feast definitely wins! All the cocktails we’ve tried though are just as yummy.
The vibes in here are great too! The modern decor and the downtown Chicago feel without the drive wins us over for majority of our date nights. During COVID lockdown the take home meals saved us so many times! They still do grab n go and when I don’t want to cook, these are the best! The staff is phenomenal and it’s locally owned- we’ve never had a bad experience here with service. Friendly, accommodating and clean. I love supporting small, but even more when the owners clearly dedicate themselves to having an...
