Venturing into IL Sogno in Wheaton, Illinois, is akin to stepping into a realm where modern elegance meets culinary ambition. From the first moment inside, you're greeted with decor that strikes a delicate balance between contemporary flair and a welcoming atmosphere. This establishment spreads its charm across two floors, offering diners a choice of ambience that adds a unique touch to the dining experience.
The service here elevates the meal to something beyond mere eating. Our server was a paragon of hospitality, adept at connecting with a mosaic of diners, each with their own stories and expectations. Where his own experience with the menu's offerings fell short, he sought wisdom from those more knowledgeable, ensuring our culinary journey was both personal and enlightening.
The menu, a testament to the restaurant's commitment to homemade authenticity, offered a journey of flavors with some notable highlights and a few detours. The calamari, intended to be a crispy delight, missed its mark with a texture that leaned more towards the soggy and bouncy, leaving a yearning for that satisfying crunch.
Yet, redemption was found in the cacio e pepe, not just through its perfectly al dente homemade noodles but also through the beautifully cooked chicken that accompanied it. This dish stood out as a masterpiece, marrying simplicity with profound flavor. Served from a Parmesan wheel, it brought a touch of theatricality to our table, creating not just a meal, but an experience.
However, the gnocchi presented a departure from the evening's culinary highs. Its dense texture hinted at an overenthusiastic kneading process, missing the mark of the light, pillowy consistency that gnocchi aficionados cherish. The accompanying sauce, too, felt less like the product of a passionate kitchen and more akin to a store-bought selection, lacking the depth and homemade warmth one might expect.
Despite this, the dessert offerings and thoughtful pricing brought the experience back into a positive light. The dessert menu, while not groundbreaking, provided a satisfying conclusion to our meal, and the pricing reflected a fair exchange for the quality and ambiance provided.
In summary, IL Sogno is a place of effort and ambition, where the pursuit of homemade culinary excellence is evident. It's in this striving, this dedication to creating something genuinely special, that the restaurant finds its true identity. With its highs and occasional lows, IL Sogno offers more than just a meal—it invites diners on a journey of flavor, innovation,...
Read moreWhether a romantic dinner for two or a wedding dinner for 75, you will not find a restaurant with more delicious Southern Italian food and personal service than Il Sogno. When you dine at Il Sogno, you will be supporting a local family-owned business. From the antipasti to dessert and everything in between, the variety of choices and the quality of the dishes delivered to your table do not disappoint. The wine selection is extensive and the staff is always very helpful in recommending a wine pairing to go along with your meal. Our go to favorites are the Mastrojanni Super Tuscan "San Pio" and the Juggernaut Cabernet Sauvignon and they price them very well. Rose and her entire team always make you feel like family, which keep us coming back time and time again. When we were planning our wedding dinner in 2024, Il Sogno was top on our list. We sat down with Rose several months in advance and she helped us to put together a complete menu based on our favorite Sogno dishes, which included Chicken Piccata and her original entrée, and my personal favorite, Spicy Piggy. We discussed the atmosphere that we were looking for, table set-up, wine selection and all of the smaller details and were confident that we were in good hands with Rose and her team. When the big day arrived, all I can say is that Sogno knocked it out of the park. The room, the drinks, the food and most importantly the service were nothing short of perfect. It was also clear that we weren’t the only ones that felt that way, based on the number of calls and text messages we received from family and friends over the course of the following week. It’s not often people rave about a meal, and we heard about all of it – the polenta meatballs were a huge hit, the flatbread, both entrees, the wine we served, and every single one of them mentioned how great the service was. If you are looking for a great dinner out or holding a private event, I whole heartedly...
Read moreWe returned to IL Sogno because our previous visits had been so positive and there’s a lot to be said for consistency. Friday night’s visit returned the same illustrious experience. The ambiance is beautiful and celebratory. The walls and ceiling on the roof are festooned with bougainvillea flowers and the open air views enhanced the mild summer night. We began with an Unshackled Cabernet (excellent-$17), and a non-alcoholic blueberry mojito. These are great choices and worth the price. A fried calamari appetizer was delicate and flavorful. Our friends ordered the special, a salmon risotto with olives, tomatoes and a cauliflower glaze - and a braised short rib vinzio. My wife ordered the spicy piggy (a large pork tenderloin) and I had the cacio E Peppe which is linguine bathed in a large Parmesan wheel creating an explosively flavorful buttery dish. I added shrimp and cracked pepper. We all shared and enjoyed every meal and every single bite. The only downer happened when I ordered a second glass of the Unshackled Cab and I complimented the server on the speed with which it was delivered. This server ( not our waiter ) responded with a very crude joke about his girlfriend not liking how fast he is. We were like, huh?? Anyway, Jason our waiter did a fantastic job ( would’ve been 5 stars if not for the crude joke). With Kilwin’s around the corner we decided to dessert there. This is the best restaurant in Wheaton in our opinion and that’s saying a lot given all the great options. If you haven’t tried Sogno you’ve got to make it happen....
