The food here is pretty good, and that is what is important to me. I have some VERY SMALL "dings," but nothing to detract from the overall experience. Four out of five stars, read the entire review if you want the full picture. ↓↓
I had the Memphis Style Pulled Pork sandwich, with fries as the side. I very much like that they offer Memphis Style on the menu as an option, as many restaurants don't. BONUS: I asked for extra pickles, and was pleasantly surprised at the amount. I am crazy about pickles, and when I ask for extra I usually don't get what I really want. In this case, they were not stingy. This alone will bring me back for more visits in the future. The sandwich itself was delicious, however the fries were very mid and could be more crisp and hot when served. The "Napalm" sauce was super tasty, and spicy but not insanely spicy to where you can't enjoy it. My co-workers also enjoyed their meals, the brisket and BBQ plate. Other reviews say the brisket is dry, but that was not the case today, as my co-workers would attest to. To me, food is the most important thing about a restaurant, so I will definitely be going back.
For the service, I have some minor complaints. I came in with three ppl, and they asked if we were ordering together/separately, which we were ordering separately. The cashier said we had to put it all on one order, and then we would separately pay after we were done ordering. Why? That is a bit weird, why can't you just make three different orders? Not a huge deal in the scale of things, but kind of annoying and abnormal. When my meal came, the kitchen forgot the Cole slaw, and the BBQ sauce was not what I had asked for, so I had to ask them to fix it. They did so quickly, so not the biggest thing. Just please pay attention to these orders, as I don't want to be waiting just after getting my food to get it corrected. Also, everything is pretty much self-service, so who is the tip going to, and should I even tip to begin with? When I ring up, at the beginning when I walk in, they ask for a tip amount. But, I haven't even been served yet, so how do I know if I want to tip and how much? And, who will be getting the tip? Tipping is so weird these days. If I am getting my own drinks, and paying up front, I would rather not tip at all. Otherwise, I am just giving someone free money just to bring my food from the kitchen to my table. Just pay your employees so I don't have to. At the end, you have to take your plate and trash to the designated area, so there is another thing I am doing myself as well. This bizzaro world between service and self-serve is silly.
On a side note, I cannot understand why they are selling t-shirts and trying to brand themselves as some unique or high-tier BBQ place. There is really nothing inventive or unique about boom boom que, other than the name, brand new building, and bar area. The menu has an average amount of food selections, and there is no signature menu item (that I aware) that is a must try or specialty item. That's fine, nothing wrong with that, just seems like they want to be more than they actually are. Sorry if this seems negative, just my humble opinion and take it with a grain of salt.
Overall, I would recommend going here, this is a mid-range TN BBQ place with good eatin' to be had. The value is nice, and the location is easy to access. The food was very good, for the one time I have been, with just a bit of room for improvement. I would certainly eat here again, and can see myself going once a month for take out or eat-in since I am in the area often. The staff were very friendly and the brand new facilities are comfortable. The pricing is what I would expect in 2025 with inflation and high prices everywhere you go. I paid about $20 bucks for slightly above average BBQ. No complaints there. I give this place 4 stars, well deserved.
Note: After a few more visits, I may amend this review to reflect new...
Read moreAs an avid nerd of all things barbecue and beef, I have been eagerly awaiting Boom Boom Que's grand opening. These owners have serious credentials!
We were their third table for lunch service on day 1. The building is gorgeous and sports a lovely indoor-outdoor bar and a large covered patio.
We ordered 2 appetizers and 2 mains plus a couple of fountain drinks. The total after a tip was about $80. All the food came out at once.
The smoked bologna was really nicely done. It was cut into cubes like burnt ends and served tossed in a thin, sweet bbq sauce along with a few thinly sliced sautéed veggies plus plenty of saltines. We both wished the bologna was charred or more colorful, but the smoke flavor was present if mild. Very enjoyable.
The jalapeño popper dip was spectacular. The candied jalapeños (cowboy candy) added a perfect amount of sweetness to the smoky pimento-cheese-based dip. Even the fried pita chips that came with the dip were a cut above.
The Cuban sandwich was my wife's favorite thing we ordered. Though perhaps not as authentic as one you'd get in Ybor City, FL, every element worked in harmony. Highly recommended dish!
The brisket plate was our final item and the one I was most looking forward to trying. The seasoning was on-point with a nice bark. And the flat meat, which we were regrettably served instead of from the fattier point, was nice and tender. Truth be told, the brisket was somewhat dry, which surprised me since we were literally the third table of opening day! Additionally, although I believe that dish (which came with two excellent sides) was about $22, we were only served 3 (no. 2 pencil thickness) slices of meat. I'd estimate it was about 4 oz. on the plate.
Service consisted of ordering at the counter and the food being brought out to us. No wait staff were on duty.
I have elected to give BBQ an inflated 5-star overall rating because I believe in their potential based on the composition of the dishes. The sides were all great (mac & cheese, baked beans, and green beans) and we really loved the place. Hopefully the owners will consider adding wait staff to the floor and more brisket to the plates. I'd also love to be asked whether I want flat or point, but perhaps that's unrealistic.
We'll be returning, and we wish you all the best. I intend to update this review, for better or for worse, based on...
Read moreHere's my honest opinion about my experience. I'm not trying to drag this place, but there are several issues that need to be addressed.
The Positives: The building is very nice. The environment is very nice. The parking lot is big and has plenty of room.
The Negatives: When entering the restaurant, a decision was made to put the ordering counter right at the front door. This causes everyone coming in to pool together, and there's no way to create a line. If it was storming or the weather was extremely cold, anyone not inside already would pretty much have to stand outside in the elements. It was an unfortunate decision in my opinion. It needs to be relocated.
The prices! Good grief. The prices are set way too high. Period.
As we made our way to get our drinks, they were out of Diet Coke and Coke Zero (the only diet options). We got iced tea instead, and had to dilute it down with unsweetened because it was way too sweet.
Now the food. The smoked crab dip was very good. The beans were also really good, as well as the fries. The mac and cheese, on the other hand, was flavorless, and I honestly questioned if there was even cheese in it. The mac and cheese was served on the paper with the meat instead of in a container. Because of this, the paper started tearing and getting mixed in with the mac and cheese and became unmanageable. The brisket looked and tasted like pulled pork. I didn't get brisket vibes from it at all. In fact, there is a picture in another review of someone's brisket, and it was sliced. Again, mine looked like pulled port. As others mentioned, I was expecting over the top flavor from an "award winning" pro. It tasted good, but not really extraordinary.
I wish nothing but success for this place, but some changes need to be made. Again, work on that pricing. It doesn't...
