My spouse & travel to Wichita periodically for medical reasons & we decided to try AJ Sports Bar & Grill, since it wasn't far from our Hotel. To say our meal & drinks were a disappointment is an understatement. To start off, we ordered cocktails (Margarita & White Russian). My spouse said that his margarita was 'fair' but tasted more like lime juice than a Margarita. My White Russian was horrid. I don't know if the bartender didn't know how to mix 3 ingredients or what, but it definitely tasted nothing like a White Russian & didn't even look like one. It tasted more like they put coffee in the drink rather than Kahlua & some weird stuff floating on top. The vodka in the drink was so strong that I asked the waiter if they could ask the bartender to pour out a little of the vodka & put a little more cream in it. When the waiter returned with my drink, it was then I found out what the mysterious 'white substance' was floating on the top of my drink. The waiter said that they didn't have cream so the bartender put coffee creamer in my drink. Heck, even milk would have been better than coffee creamer! YUCK! I even stirred & 'tried' to sip it, but it was still undrinkable, so I left it sitting on the table when we left.
We then ordered spinach artichoke dip as an appetizer. I must say, it was different than any spinach artichoke dip I have ever eaten. It was extremely thick (like glue) & instead of fried tortilla chips, we were given some type of bread with it. We then ordered our main courses & my spouse ordered a ribeye steak, medium rare & I ordered a classic burger with Swiss cheese & homemade chips. How do you ruin those 2 things? Well, it was done. My husband's steak came back well done & tough. My burger literally was raw. I'm serious, when I bit into it, blood ran out of the burger. I am particular with my food, but my spouse isn't & can usually eat anything. But, when he leaves an uneaten steak on the table, I know the food is bad.
I don't know if you were training new employees or what, but the only thing acceptable about AJ's Sports Bar & Grill was our waiter. We are planning on a return trip through Wichita again & I can guarantee you, that we won't be dining at AJ's Sports Bar & Grill. We will now eat at Hot Stone Korean Grill, based on a friends...
Read moreI don't know what this city has against the most perfect food, but there are surprisingly few pizza options. Sure, Bartelli's and Pizza John's are great, but I live on the northeast side of town and don't want to drive 20 minutes one way to get my pie. My search brought me to AJ's, a place which I'm surprised isn't more talked about given its notoriety for serving a 29" pizza, though a mere 12" was in the cards for me.
The pizza looked quite promising when I opened that box and gazed upon the pepperoni and jalapeno pie looking back at me - the crust and toppings was singed, slightly blackened on the edges which tends to give everything a nice crispiness. The pepperoni did turn out to be awesomely crispy, and the other ingredients were pretty enjoyable as well - the cheese was a mixture of cheddar and mozzarella - something I prefer - and was also nice and crispy in places due to the high heat of the oven. The sauce was very respectably seasoned, too, making for a lot of components working in AJ's favor, but then I got to the crust.
I think the crust was as think as they could make it, but I think it was still a bit too thick for New York-style comparisons. I think this thickness became a problem during the cooking, because it was very close to being undercooked. I don't know if the problem could be rectified by leaving the pie in the oven for a few more minutes, given the state of the toppings and top crust, but it was heartbreaking to see this great-looking pizza, grab a square, and feel my heart sink from the soft crust. Given how much I enjoyed everything else about the pizza, the crust wasn't a dealbreaker, but they were so close to being some truly great pizza. The search may continue for good pizza, but I definitely expect to be ordering again from AJs...
Read moreI frequent AJ's once a week as I bowl there every Wednesday and have for the last 20 years. They have a decent beer selection (although I would prefer to see more exotic beers like reds and more IPA). The beer on my bowling night accounts for my $20 a week bar tab. The staff is friendly and engaging. Recently after a night of bowling I ordered a large Perfect 300, hold the olives and add Jalopenos. My standard order and it was to go. When my pizza came it was missing the jalpenos and let me point out that is not the first time that has happened. I brought it to the staff's attention. He was quite upset by the error. Not sure if it was his fault or the kitchen's. Nonetheless, he took the pizza back. Sometime later, he brings me my pizza and apologizes. I drive home, open my box and what do I discover? They have taken pickled jalopenos and distributed them across the top of the pizza. Really? Are those not supposed to be baked into the pizza? Needless to say I am quite disappointed in AJ's. There is a sign on the door when you walk in that says "Wichita's Finest Pizza." Not today it wasn't. To the AJ manager.... when you make a mistake. You make it right. You don't pull a stunt like this to someone who has been loyal to your establishment for 20+ years. It will be quite sometime before I order anything from...
