Anyone who knows me, knows I'm not a big fan of Chicken. I've tried the Pollos Asados on Rigsby Ave, but didnt realize they had opened a location on Walzem Rd in the building that used to house a New Orleans restaurant years ago in the Rackspace parking lot. I decided to try it out, and knew it was the same place as a cloud of smoke surrounded not only the building, but hovered over the tables inside.
Pollos Asados became notorious for its smoke cloud, which blinded drivers passing by the original location, and invaded homes nearby. But people love the chicken, and swear its some of the best BBQ'd chicken anywhere. I would agree, the chicken here is really good, but on this visit I saw someone at another table get a huge order of beef fajitas which peaked my curiosity. Thats when I decided to go with the fajitas instead of the grilled chicken.
I did however have to ask the waitress about the menu, as the fajita section had multiple items, no description or explanation as to what the difference was between the items. She explained to me that the "Fajitas" was lean beef, The "Sirloin" was fattier beef, and that while they came with grilled onions on bottom, the "Brochetas" came with grilled onions and bacon mixed with the meat and was probably the most flavorful of the options. So I decided to order the Brochetas and Im glad I did.
The plate of sizzling meat came out along with a roasted habanero, and it looked and smelt amazing. It was accompanied by a bowl of borracho beans, a bowl of rice, a pack of corn tortillas, a bowl of lettuce and a small serving of guacamole. The order that came out which I thought was the order for 2 or larger I saw at the other table was in fact the single serving. It was a ton of food. I told my friend, had this been somewhere like Taco Cabana, you would have to order 8-10 tacos to even come close to this portion size.
The meat was full of flavor, the onions caramelized perfectly, a lot of smoky charred flavor, but no burnt flavor. I made at least 4 tacos, ate half my beans, most my rice and most the salad and was stuffed. The to-go box was nearly a full meal, and ended up making 3 more tacos later.
My waitress was very attentive, came by several times, took the time to explain the item differences, and even brought me a tea to go at the end of the meal. Everything about this place was great. The service, the food, and the portion sizes. Despite not being a fan of chicken, and chicken being what this place is known for, I'll be back to eat here again. I've tried both the chicken and the beef fajitas now, and both...
Read moreHave been to the Rigsby location several times, but first time trying the Walzem location. I was a little hesitant as often new locations often lose the character of the original location since newer isn't always better. Was happy to know their consistency is the same between locations. Can never go wrong with the rotisserie chicken.
Walked in and was immediately seated as there was not any wait. There was only about 3 of the 15 tables occupied. Restaurant was very clean and has an open kitchen. Waitress was very friendly and immediately came to take the drink and food orders. That was an easy decision as always get the chicken. One day I'll try the burgers or other meats, but hard to stray from the chicken.
As always, food immediately came out as they're cooking the chicken all day. Ordered the whole chicken, pico de gallo, and charro beans. The chicken is great by itself, but the pico de gallo gives it a nice kick. The charro beans are surprisingly good and complements the chicken nicely. The chicken is always perfectly charred on the outside while still juicy on the inside.
They were selling desserts by Juan De Victoria, so decided to give it a try. Picked out the Imperial cake and the Texas Cake at the waitresses recommendation. Both were good, but preferred the Imperial Cake as it was unique. It is tres leches with cajeta, pecans, and coconut flakes. It kept the moisture of the tres leche while adding crunch with the pecans and coconut flakes. The Texas Cake was half vanilla and half chocolate with tres leche. Both cakes were very moist and good.
Favorite place to get really good rotisserie chicken at a very inexpensive price. While it may not have the same character as the original location, the food is very consistent and...
Read moreAnother quick lunch run for the office squad. The people running the show at this location are on point. I had 6 different orders, very annoying, and they handled it with no issues whatsoever. The staff were very friendly and helpful. This place is always packed. Even back when I worked at Rackspace this place was always busy. What sets Pollos Asados Norteños apart is they get you in and out and your food is always hot and delicious. I placed my ridiculous, numerous orders and we got the food in a very timely fashion. I have only ever had the Whole or Half Chicken from this place. I need to try the fajitas at some point. I ordered the Half Chicken and it was still hot when I got back to the office. When you open the styrofoam clamshell you are greeted by the signature warm, red glow of the Pollos Asados Los Norteños charbroiled chicken. It’s unmistakeable. The chicken is bursting with flavor and extremely juicy. I have eaten here before but I had never tried the green sauce. My colleagues were shocked at this blasphemous revelation. I tried it this time and was absolutely blown away. I originally stayed away from it because I’m not great with spicy, but the green sauce is a creative concoction that compliments any cuisine. It truly is delectable. The Charro beans are another standout offering, and they are delicious. They go perfect with the charbroiled chicken and rice. The last of the accoutrements are the grilled onion and the lime, and they take this dish to an even higher level. All in all, this might be one of San Antonio’s truly perfect dishes. Fantastic place to take visiting family and friends, for an everyday lunch, or just a dinner...
