When they opened, I just thought they had a fun name. No. Mofongo, as a Puerto Rican dish, is serious...seriously delicious!
Note: I have never actually been inside; my better half has always gotten our takeout (working lunches be like that). But, he states that the restaurant is clean and orderly, and the staff is good-natured.
Food: Mofongo is a hefty but delightful smashed plantain dish. You can order it as the base of a Mofongo bowl. You can, and you must. The other option is rice, which, according to my better half, is quite good. The pernil--basically carnitas for us SoCal natives--is always juicy and flavorful. Sides and desserts: the sweet plantains are HEAVEN. And the tres leches is a good representation of the dessert, especially for a place that's one to two steps up from fast food.
I docked a star for inconsistency in order accuracy. Having ordered MofonGo five or so times, twice they've messed up the order. The first was during their first week open, so grace was amply given. The second was months after, with correct orders in between. But they neglected to put on any toppings that were in the order. We went back and checked against the receipt, it was unfortunately an error on their fulfillment. It happens.
It's a pretty good value for what you're spending. I can only eat half a bowl in one sitting. And I'm not a shy eater.
But, all-in-all, 100% recommend. Just check your order, like we almost always do, but just didn't because...
Read moreI recently visited the new Mofongo restaurant in Willimantic they are known for Puerto Rican and American fusion cuisine. The restaurant features a spacious dining area, creating a comfortable atmosphere for guests. From the moment I walked in, the staff was incredibly welcoming and helpful, guiding me through the menu and assisting with my order. One of the highlights of Mofongo is the ability to build your own mofongo or rice bowl. Two of their most popular options are The Overload and The Shrimp Loversâboth of which I tried, and they were exceptional. The Overload lives up to its name, packed with generous portions of flavorful ingredientâit was heavy, lol. The restaurant also offers a variety of appetizers, including empanadas, pinchos, sweet plantains, tostones, pastelĂłn, canoa, alcapurria bites, and sorullitos. Everything I tasted was hot, fresh, and bursting with flavor. To end the meal on a sweet note, I tried their tres leches cake, and it was absolutely incredibleâeasily the best Iâve ever had. If youâre in Willimantic, I highly recommend stopping by Mofongo. Whether youâre a fan of Puerto Rican cuisine or trying it for the first time, this spot is...
Read moreWhen this restaurant first opened up a few months ago, the food was absolutely fantastic. However, the last two times that I visited, the Pernil which is one of my favorites is somewhat dry now. The overall food quality is not the same as when they first opened. No sure why is this? Perhaps maybe the food is sitting in the food warmers for too long which can change the overall quality and taste. My fiance and would drive here 35 minutes from our home for their food. On one occasion, we arrived at 7:20p and noticed the doors where locked with one customer still seated and eating, and one employee sweeping the floor. The store hours on the door was posted as they closed at 8:00p. I knocked on the window to get the employees attention that was sweeping the floor, however she avoided eye contact and just totally ignored me. We sat in the parking lot for 10 minutes and noticed quite a few other customers like ourselves trying to dine out only to be turned away. We will no longer...
