I came to this restaurant as a party of 4, on a recommendation from a friend. We came at around 2 o’clock in the afternoon on a Sunday, after throwing axes up the street at The Axe Trap.
We were seated pretty much immediately, and we’re accommodated to sit outside. It was a beautiful day, and we were able to watch a family of ducks in the fountain, and all of the people who could not respect those duck’s boundaries. Not that that has any bearing on this review.
Whenever I go to a new Mexican restaurant, I always order Arroz con Pollo. It’s a simple, staple dish, and it is a wonderful gauge of what I can expect from the kitchen.
While waiting for our food to come out, we did order chips and salsa. Their menu makes it very known that only your first 2 baskets of chips are free. If you ask for third, you will have to pay. I don’t believe that these chips were made in-house. Most restaurants that make their own are very proud about it and will tell you at the table or on the menu. Since this restaurant wanted to make it so known that these chips were not bottomless, I have to assume that they must be paying a large amount for the quantity they purchase.
In any case, our food came out before we finished our second basket of chips. So maybe the chip thing is because you shouldn’t expect your food to take longer than two baskets. Who knows.
My plate arrived, and the first thing I noticed was that my chicken had already been cut up and was swimming in a pool of cheese around a perfectly shaped island of rice topped with avocado, tomato, and sprouts. This particular dish is usually a whole piece of chicken or half a chicken on a bed of rice. I have never seen it presented this way, but I wanted to give it my honest opinion so I dug in. I did manage to fish out a piece of chicken, and taste it without the cheese. It was good, but definitely better with the cheese on it. The rice was mediocre, which made me really sad.
As someone who is lactose intolerant, I don’t usually order dishes drowned in cheese.
We also put in an order of Mexican street corn. Superb. It was absolutely delicious, and I ate it all. My only gripe about this, is that nothing was given for us to hold the corn. Putting it on a stick or giving little corn holders really would have enhanced it. I had to get my hands dirty to eat this one. But it was so good, I really didn’t care after the first bite. Don’t change a thing, but please, put it on a skewer.
Finally, we also ordered a bowl of guacamole. The emotions at the table were mixed. Some thought it was good and others thought it was lackluster. I thought it was all right, but better when mixed with salsa.
I’ve included pictures of the dishes, ordered by my table, but I can only talk about the things I actually tasted. I would definitely come back to try something else, but it would not be the...
Read moreThere’s servers, there’s great servers and then there’s Paula. When I woke up this morning I never expected to have such a life changing experience at a Mexican restaurant. I walked in, the lighting was perfect, like I stumbled upon a Mexican Festival in Guadalajara. I was served a chilled shot of tequila- the flavors were unlike anything I’ve experienced. Smooth doesn’t begin to describe the complex flavors this elixir contained. Don’t even get me started on the food. Michelin stars WISH they were Anejo Cocina in Winter Park. But the service… words can’t even dream of capturing what Paula delivered unto us, like a hospitality deity descended from the heavens of five-star service. This wasn’t just dinner—it was a spiritual awakening in queso form.
When Paula approached our table, time stopped. I swear I heard a mariachi version of “Ave Maria” faintly echoing through the walls. Her smile? Brighter than a thousand flamenco dresses swirling in unison. Her menu knowledge? Encyclopedic. Her recommendations? Prophetic. When she said the Birria tacos would “change my life,” I thought she was being dramatic. I was wrong. I cried. I sobbed openly into my margarita like I had just met my ancestors.
She anticipated every need before I knew I had it. I reached for my napkin—boom, fresh one already in hand. I dropped a fork—bam, she replaced it mid-air like a Cirque du Soleil act. She called me “amigo” and I genuinely believed we had known each other since the 3rd grade. My own mother has never made me feel so seen.
At one point I said, “This is the best service I’ve ever had,” and Paula—SWEET, MODEST PAULA—just giggled like she hadn’t just realigned my chakras and cured my seasonal depression with a side of rice and beans.
If I ever get married, Paula is officiating. If I ever get arrested, I’m calling Paula. When I die, I want Paula to guide me into the afterlife while holding a sizzling molcajete.
11/10. Michelin? Please. This woman deserves a...
