Overall impression is that somebody had too much money, decided to open a coffee shop, but had never really worked at one let alone read a book on the subject.
No sane person could argue about the appearance of the pastries and coffee in this place. Aesthetically, they're beautiful. But that's it.
The chocolate croissant however, rather than being light and flaky, was painfully chewy. To boot, it was warm on the outside and tonge- searingly-molten hot in the middle. In other words: it had been microwaved.
When I inquired about it being microwaved the girl told me flat out, "No, it was not." B.S. Microwaves do two things: they absolutely destroy the texture of bread and pastries and they don't heat evenly.
The latte had so much milk I had to imagine what coffee used to taste like. Plus, because it was in a wide low cup it cooled way too quickly.
As you look at the visual descriptions of various coffee proportions on the wall, the macchiato is absolutely wrong. They have their's as mostly milk with a little bit of coffee. The word "macchiato" in Italian means "marked". It is essentially espresso 'marked' with a little bit of foamy milk. Not the other way around. Can somebody please buy a book on coffee shop basics?
To their credit, the place is clean and organized but there are far too few seats to ever consistently rely on availability when meeting friends here.
So, there's something completely amiss about this whole operation. Overly concentrated on aesthetics while completely overlooking authenticity. Anyways, while possibly well-intentioned they have completely missed the mark on a couple of major issues. Hopefully they'll use this as an...
Read moreThe staff thats works there are really friendly and always helpful, the gentleman however who, assuming owns the cafe, seems to only have a friendly attitude when it’s convenient for business. My co workers and I used to take our lunch breaks quite often here, and every other week one of us buys coffee here in the mornings. Occasionally like today, my boss asked if the cafe would let us get a cup of ice, I went into the cafe and asked the gentleman if I could get a cup of ice AND offered to pay for it as well, knowing that a previous time he mentioned to my co workers that his cups are “expensive”. Which is fine, understandable, which is why I offered to pay. Instead the gentleman said “let me ask you this, why don’t you bring your own cup, and then I’ll give you all the ice in the cooler?”…. I then again mentioned if theres a problem with just a cup of ice, I’d pay for it. “Seems like a waste of a cup to me”… The way he spoke seemed pretty petty, especially towards someone who would come in frequently and have no problem paying before. Again great service from the other staff, but sir needs to rethink how he speaks to ALL customers. My coworkers do not come here for our breaks anymore because of similar...
Read moreWhat an amazing little spot! My husband and I popped in for a coffee and antojo this morning while we were in WP. We were definitely not disappointed. The shop is very clean, the staff is very personable and everything we ordered was great. They have a few tables indoors and a few outdoors as well as a lounge area to hangout or pop up a laptop.
San Julian's is serving up the BEST pandebonos we've ever had. We also ordered a few Colombian empanadas that were served with ají - equally delicious. (My husband is from Calí so his stamp of approval has more weight than mine).
The gentleman, who I presume is the owner/manager, recommended the Campesino to drink. It was refreshing and different than what I've had at other Colombian shops. It was similar to a colada but with lime, a cinnamon stick and a brown sugar rim - 10/10
We can't wait to come back and try more from this little gem. Thanks for doing what you do! My husband is especially happy knowing he has a slice of home only a...
