We worked with Chowpatty for our garba and welcome dinner during our wedding week earlier this year. In the lead up to our events, we primarily worked with Neil to set up tastings, finalize our menu, etc. Working with Chowpatty at first was easy, as Neil was very responsive and was willing to work with us to earn our business. However, after we signed a contract, things became more difficult.
Before signing the contract, we let Neil know that my parents live in CA and that they wanted to do a tasting to help us finalize the menu on an upcoming trip to NJ. Neil was aware of the dates and availability, but when I reached out a few weeks before to finalize a time for a tasting, things got a little difficult. While ultimately we settled on a time, it was a lot of unnecessary back and forth. This wasn’t a huge deal, but something to note.
The biggest challenge we had was in the lead up to our garba, where there were definitely some communication challenges with Neil. We reached out to him a month before our event and requested an equipment list, which he provided. We then confirmed this list with our venue and finalized all the logistics, including layout of the entire space. Less than week before the event, Neil reached out to us with a totally new equipment list, which required different logistics and a different layout for the event. And, he asked us to confirm this with the venue – again, less than 1 week before our event. We refused and called Neil to tell him to take charge of the equipment and reaching out to the venue. Two days before our event, we reached out to Neil to confirm that he had confirmed everything he wanted with the venue and he still hadn’t. It took an email from us on the Tuesday before our Thursday garba to get him to follow up with the venue and rework things. It was a frustrating few days for us and our venue, and it would’ve been much better if Neil was clear from the very beginning on what he needed.
The other big issue we had with Chowpatty was that after signing the contract, we learned that they only keep the food out for a couple hours during events like garba and sangeet. This was something we wished they had told us before we signed the contract, as we were going to have guests arriving from out of town later during our event times. If we knew that they would close the food within three hours of starting it, we probably would not have gone with them. We’d encourage any future clients to confirm this point before signing the contract, and also encourage Neil and Chowpatty to be upfront about this with clients.
With respect to the food, overall, it was good and exceeded expectations. The street food we had at garba was great, and most of the food at our welcome dinner was high quality. There were one or two items that missed the mark and were average, but all-in-all, not as big of a concern for us as some of the...

Chowpatty has a lot to offer and the variety of items are endless. Our guests (indian and non-indian) are still raving about the food. It has been a couple of months since our wedding and to this day we still hear about the Papdi Lot Pops, Pani Puri, Chicken Kati Rolls, Paneer Tacos, Falafel Baskets, Paneer Ravioli, Undhiyu, Chicken Do Piaza, Raj Kachori Chaat...this list can go on forever! Whether it was Vegetarian or Non-Vegetarian, it was ALL so delicious!
It was such a pleasure to work with Neil from Chowpatty. Not only did he listen to our requests and ideas, but he also took our parents input into consideration and made sure he met their expectations as well! He was accommodating and made sure everything was on point! Our guests gave us positive feedback not only on the food, but also on the presentation and the service provided by the staff. We had multiple events over a 3 day period for our Wedding and Neil helped us create a diversified menu for each event. Each of our events had a different genre of food (Gujarati, Fusion, Street Food, Mexican, Chinese, Italian, Punjabi, etc). They have a lot of desserts and sweets to choose from and honestly our parents wanted it all! The Chikoo Milkshake was our favorite! As soon as we had our food tasting, THE FOOD WON OUR HEARTS! We booked them right away for all of our events and it was literally one of the best decisions we made!
Chowpatty also catered breakfast at our venue (Hanover Marriott) every day. The food and the masala chai came hot and on time every morning for our guests as soon as they woke up. There were no delays with the food and or any shortage of the food at any of the events. From when we first reached out to Chowpatty to our wedding day, we never had any communication issues with them. Through out all of our events, we did not have to worry about the Catering or check in with them. They worked flawlessly with our Wedding Planner.
Thank you Chowpatty for being a part of our wedding! You have truly made us and our guests so happy with your food and service that we still talk about it! The food was above and beyond our...
Read moreWalking into Chowpatty in Edison, I was immediately struck by the bright, clean atmosphere enhanced by natural lighting and charming hand-painted murals of Bollywood stars like Shah Rukh Khan and Sunny Deol.
The spacious seating and prompt, attentive service made for a welcoming first impression as we were seated and handed menus right away. While browsing, I noticed this was a strictly vegetarian establishment, which wasn't an issue but did surprise me initially.
Our drinks presented a contrast. The Cool Chai, their version of iced masala chai, fell short as the cold temperature dulled the warm spices characteristic of traditional chai. My fiancée's Mango Lassi fared better, being creamy, perfectly sweet, and exactly what you'd expect from this classic yogurt drink.
For entrees, my Mysore Masala Dosa stood out as excellent, featuring a crisp, golden crepe with well-spiced potato filling and just enough heat to distinguish it from a regular masala dosa. The accompanying sambar, however, felt lacking compared to what I'm used to from Kerala, consisting mostly of thin broth with few vegetables.
My fiancée's Kathiyawadi Thali arrived in an impressive traditional presentation with multiple curries in small metal bowls. While visually appealing, the flavors didn't quite deliver as the curries were decent but unmemorable, leading her to eat less than half. This might have been partly due to having kulfi earlier, but nothing in the thali particularly stood out.
Overall, Chowpatty offers a pleasant dining experience with some clear highlights. The dosa was genuinely good, the space inviting, and the service excellent. While not every dish impressed, it's a solid vegetarian option worth returning to. Next time I'd like to try their other dosa varieties or uttapam.
The restaurant shows promise, especially for those craving authentic South Indian flavors in a comfortable setting, though I'd recommend ordering chai hot and adjusting expectations for Cool Chai of you decide to...
