I went there recently with a group of fellow teachers to celebrate the last day of teacher appreciation week (curtesy of our incredible PTO), and, despite the lovely decor and decently tasty food, the service was less than impressive. It wasn’t very busy when we were there, there were plenty of available seats and tables. We had 3 charcuterie boards, and 4-5 pizzas. The food was fine, nothing wildly outstanding, and the cocktails were good, but no one came back to check up on us or to see if we needed/wanted anything, or even to clear empty plates and glasses away. They largely seemed eager for us to leave. In fact, the owner came by, picked up a serving plate that still had pizza on it and asked us if we were done. We said no, and he slid it to one of our plates. He then went for a charcuterie board, picked it up and asked if we were done, to which we said no and that we were still enjoying it, and then he suggested we move it down the table so other people could eat it (despite the fact that there were two other boards down the length of the table), to which i then said “if that’s what you want to do? But i’m pretty sure we’re still eating it.” It was really awkward, and just felt like he was really trying to get us out of there, we certainly didn’t feel like appreciated customers. If the concern was that we didn’t order enough, or spend enough money, the fact that they never came to offer us more of anything else was one reason why. Now, i cannot speak for my friends, but making us feel unwelcome and rushed is definitely the reason why i won’t be returning. Full on pretentiousness is not...
Read moreThis was my fourth time at King and Co. Cafe in Ypsilanti. On previous visits I had always ordered the thin crust margarita pizza and was always very happy with it (it’s very good on day two, as well). The atmosphere of the cafe is pleasant, with wood table and an impressive bar. Waitstaff has been hit and miss and on this visit slow, but friendly.
I visited on Thursday, February 13 for an early dinner. When I arrived I was the only guest. I ordered the blackened salmon special with asparagus, quinoa, and a sauce for $30. A full 25-minutes later my dinner arrived. The salmon was not just blackened, but encrusted and blackened and terribly dry as a result. It literally looked like a charcoal brick in the plate. The asparagus, what there was of it, was limp, the quinoa gritty. The sauce, however, was good. When the waiter asked how the meal was I informed him it was terribly dry, and he could see I had only eaten a few bites. He apologized but did nothing to rectify the situation. The bill arrived with no adjustments.
I left disappointed, which I noted on my bill, and wondering if I’ll return to this establishment. Which is a shame as Ypsi needs good restaurants and businesses to help Michigan Ave. continue to improve. Do better,...
Read moreThis was a wonderful experience for me. I had a Bloody Mary, a wood fired pizza and iced tea. First, the Waitperson, Amanda, was amazing. An authentic person that was absolutely focused on making my experience pleasant and special. She was also my barista for my iced tea and Bloody Mary…both hand made for me. No Lipton iced tea from a pitcher or Bloody Mary mixes here. You wouldn’t think individually brewed iced tea would taste much different than mass brewed tea, right? But the tea was wonderfully fresh and different. And my Bloody Mary was so fresh and found just the right balance, including the garnishes. Not too spicy or overpowering. Just the right balance of flavors and textures without overwhelming my palette or stomach. Now the pizza..wood fired, fresh custom dough, outstanding cheeses and fresh garnishes. Not too much, just fresh, tasty and a wonderful crunch. The atmosphere of the rest. is really nice too. I love the laid back, real atmosphere of downtown Ypsilanti. I’m from Ann Arbor where the hustle and university vibe of downtown Ann Arbor is great, but I truly enjoy the authentic, open Ypsilanti atmosphere. Thanks for a great Sunday...
