(My statements are grounded in evidence as well as eye witness accounts, this is not made up slander but the truth) They serve great coffee along with a cup of racist alcoholic abusive managers and owners. I got wrongfully terminated for no reason, no write up, no warning and was blamed by racist alcoholics for the reason their business is failing as if they're not abusive owners who have already previously had an ENTIRE staff quit at once in protest of their behavior. They claimed I had "multiple write ups" from the previous manager which I was never told about, never signed, and were not legally and professionally documented. They did not follow the very procedures they detail in the employee manual that they wrote in the process of my "write ups." When I asked to see the paper work and my "multiple write ups" the owner Melody said she "left them at home". They took my shifts away, decreased my hours and were informally and unethically punishing me without my notice while the entire staff was aware but me. I'm the only employee on staff that was punished and who had to adhere to the "rules" set in place while my coworkers audacious behavior and job performances were promoted and ignored. They used me, the first black female employee (who they said "was not a good fit" what about me, a black woman, isn't a "good fit"?) as a scape goat for their utter unprofessionalism and unethical behavior towards their employees. This establishment was failing without the influence of one black girl. Like I said, the coffee is great, but the manner in which this establishment is run is disgusting. I was one of the most senior employees and In the year that I was there I saw a whole new staff come in and out about...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreA street corner coffee shop with a lot to offer inside.
First impressions: it's like if you took an abandoned greenhouse and turned it into a cafƩ. It's got a charming grunge to it. It's very clean and tidy, but it feels earthy and weathered at the same time.
They offer parking out front, but there aren't many spaces. Despite this, there is plenty of seating options along the window, near the counter, and deeper within the building. It's not a huge space; the ceiling is high and has exposed airducts, giving it that classic, purposely unfinished, industrial look.
I visited this cafƩ around three in the afternoon, and it was not busy at all. Their lists of drinks was all very standard, with a giant chalk board detailing the menu overhead as you walk through the entrance. The cup of coffee I purchased ( an Irish Cream Cappuccino with almond milk) was inexpensive and delivered very quickly to my table.
What sold me on this place was the service. Everyone that worked there was extremely friendly and welcoming. The server who had brought me my order made sure to check in on me after I had taken a sip to insure that it was to my liking. The entire process of buying a cup of coffee felt more like a conversation between friends, instead of an act of commerce.
Overall, this is the perfect solo spot if you're a cafƩ hopper like myself. I would also recommend this place for small, friendly gatherings as a means to relax and share a conversation over coffee and muffins. I definitely will be returning to Cross Street Coffee soon, and hope that you give it a...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreYour typical local hipster coffee joint. Too cold in the winter time-- not sure if it's because they need better insulation, better heating, or people are constantly opening the door (it's a small place). The coffee is the fruity, bright coffee that's en vogue in these kinds of places now. If that's your jam, then you will like their drinks! If it's not (which it's not mine), stick with their teas or with their rich lattes that mask the bright tanginess of their hipster roasts. I love the Mexican latte.
They've got great bagel sandwiches, I'll give them that. The Killer Bagel is my favourite. They use fresh ingredients in tasty combinations. They've also got a decent selection of baked treats, but that may have changed since last I was in (I heard they were getting rid of their pastry case).
They also have some cute, over-priced souvenirs for sale, like mugs and t-shirts, and stickers. Standard prizes as far as drinks.
The ambiance is poetical late anti-capitalist with a sprinkling of faux anarcho-Marxist. They've got some books to borrow in case some lout had the nerve to show up without one. The window seating is the best, objectively.
The staff is friendly and often changes (the latter owing to the owner being beastly, or so I heard).
Even though I tried not to go here as often as I did, I am just a sucker for hipster cafƩs. If you are, too, and you find yourself in Ypsi, the Mug is...
