Sometimes you walk into a place and it might be small or very plain but it seems to have a vibe, a character a charm.
This place has no character, no charm & no vibe. They can't even be bothered to play music in the background. It's old, desperately needs a revamp & the people who work here need to smile a little more.
So what about the food? Firstly, don't trust my opinion without reading others as well. I am a tourist so I see things very differently to the locals. The menu is pretty extensive & has some "interesting dishes" such as 'Empty meet??' & 'Grilled Thymus Gland' aka giblets 😂
I ordered the 'Portuguese chicken' dish which would normally mean a grilled butterflied chicken with a nice hot peri peri sauce and some fries. What I got was something that didn't resemble anything Portuguese whether from this planet or one yet to be discovered. I basically got a flattened chicken breast smothered in an unknown & tasteless sauce with a smattering of peas & carrot slices. WTH??
So much potential, such poor execution. I'll be back to try the steak, perhaps tomorrow.

Read moreI had an hour and a half to spare and decided to look for a nearby restaurant. Danubio Azul stood out with many recent five-star reviews, so I gave it a try - and I’m so glad I did. As soon as I walked in, the waiter greeted me very kindly and even welcomed me in English, which made a fantastic first impression.
They immediately offered complimentary appetizers, the service was super friendly, the atmosphere was relaxed, and the food was absolutely delicious. The portions were generous, the prices very reasonable, and the overall experience outstanding.
Another big plus: they have a full menu in both English and Spanish, which is surprisingly rare in Montevideo and made everything even easier.
I’ve lived in Uruguay for 7 years and have been to many restaurants, but Danubio Azul truly surprised me. This may just be my new favorite restaurant in Montevideo.
