MUSEO DEL TANGO - Tours & Tango show — Attraction in Montevideo

This is actually the museum of La Cumparista. Before Palacio Salvo was built, the original site was a local music bar. The author of La Cumparista was Gerardo Matos Rodríguez, who played his music here in this bar for the first time. La Cumparista has been the symbol of tango since then. Back then there was no woman allowed in the bar. The name originates from Spanish word comparisa. -sta means small. It should be Comparista. But he wrote it as Cumparista. Visiting the musium is allowed only for 20 min and inside of it there was only one small room to see. The staff said in the tour English is spoken so I took it. The staff gave me a little explanation of the tango history but she did not speak English well and also didn't have experience of tango dance. For me it's like a joke. I was so disappointed because the musium was the reason why I went to monte video. Not much to see, not much to know, no worth...

Tango developed in Argentina and Uruguay around the same time, but the 1917 tango La Cumparsita became the most famous tango created, and it was composed in a building that predated the Salvo Palace. The small museum provides great insight into the history and culture of tango.
